How Does God Communicate With Christians Today?

The question of how God communicates with Christians today is central to understanding the relationship between the Creator and His people. While many individuals claim direct experiences of God’s communication, such as dreams, visions, or audible voices, the Bible provides clear guidance on how God interacts with humanity in this age. Understanding this requires an examination of how God communicated in the past and how He has chosen to reveal Himself since the completion of the Scriptures.

God’s Communication in the Past

Throughout the Bible, God communicated with specific individuals in various ways to accomplish His purposes. These methods included direct speech, visions, dreams, and angelic messengers. However, these instances were rare and purposeful, directed at those chosen for significant roles in His plan.

Direct Speech

God’s communication with the patriarchs, such as Noah, Abraham, and Moses, involved direct speech. Genesis 6:13 states, “And God said to Noah, ‘I have determined to make an end of all flesh, for the earth is filled with violence through them. Behold, I will destroy them with the earth.’” Similarly, Exodus 3:4-6 recounts God speaking to Moses from the burning bush to commission him to deliver Israel from Egypt.

Dreams and Visions

Dreams and visions were another medium of divine communication. Joseph, for instance, received dreams revealing future events (Genesis 37:5-11), and Daniel interpreted dreams to reveal God’s plans (Daniel 2:19; 7:1). Joel 2:28 prophesied, “And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.” This prophecy was fulfilled during the apostolic era (Acts 2:16-18).

Angelic Messengers

Angels served as messengers in critical moments of biblical history. For example, the angel Gabriel announced the births of John the Baptist and Jesus Christ (Luke 1:13-31). These angelic encounters emphasized the importance of the messages they conveyed, such as the unfolding of God’s redemptive plan.

Prophets

The prophets were uniquely chosen to convey God’s messages to His people. Amos 3:7 declares, “For Jehovah does nothing without revealing his secret to his servants the prophets.” Figures like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel spoke on behalf of God, delivering His warnings, judgments, and promises of restoration.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

The Role of Jesus Christ as God’s Ultimate Communication

The coming of Jesus Christ marked the pinnacle of God’s communication with humanity. Hebrews 1:1-2 states, “Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.”

Christ embodied God’s message, as seen in John 1:14: “And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” His life, teachings, death, and resurrection provided the definitive revelation of God’s will for humanity.

The Closure of Special Revelation

With the completion of the Scriptures, God ceased the need for new revelations through prophets, dreams, or visions. Jude 3 emphasizes, “Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints.” This phrase, “once for all,” indicates that God’s revelation was completed with the apostolic writings.

Similarly, 2 Timothy 3:16-17 affirms the sufficiency of Scripture: “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” This underscores that the Bible is God’s complete guide for faith and practice.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit’s work is vital in understanding how God communicates today. The Spirit inspired the writers of Scripture (2 Peter 1:21) and continues to guide believers through the written Word. However, this guidance is not a direct, internal revelation but comes through study, meditation, and application of Scripture.

John 16:13 is often misunderstood as a promise of direct revelation to all Christians, but context shows it applied specifically to the apostles. Jesus said, “When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.” This promise ensured the apostles’ accuracy in transmitting Christ’s teachings, forming the foundation of the New Testament.

Today, the Spirit works through the Word of God to convict, instruct, and encourage believers. Ephesians 6:17 describes Scripture as “the sword of the Spirit,” emphasizing its role as the primary means of communication.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

The Bible as God’s Communication

The Bible is God’s complete and final revelation to humanity. Psalm 19:7-8 declares, “The law of Jehovah is perfect, reviving the soul; the testimony of Jehovah is sure, making wise the simple; the precepts of Jehovah are right, rejoicing the heart; the commandment of Jehovah is pure, enlightening the eyes.”

Christians are commanded to study and meditate on Scripture to understand God’s will. Joshua 1:8 advises, “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

The Bible provides guidance, correction, and encouragement, equipping believers to live faithfully. Romans 15:4 states, “For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.”

Prayer as Communication with God

While God communicates through His Word, prayer is the means by which believers communicate with Him. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Prayer allows Christians to express their needs, confess sins, and seek guidance, trusting that God hears and responds according to His will (1 John 5:14-15).

Conclusion: How God Speaks Today

God communicates with Christians today through His Spirit-inspired Word, the Bible. While dreams, visions, and prophets played a role in past dispensations, the completion of Scripture marked the cessation of new revelations. Believers are called to diligently study the Bible, pray for understanding, and apply its teachings to their lives.

Trusting in the sufficiency of Scripture and seeking God through prayer ensures a deep and abiding relationship with Him. As James 4:8 promises, “Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.”
