The Abyss (a place of restraint or confinement) is another Bible term that is often misunderstood. Some people think the Abyss is the same as hell. Others confuse it with Hades (the common grave of mankind), Gehenna (a symbol of complete destruction), or Tartarus (a condition of restraint for wicked angels).

But the Abyss is different from all of these.

The Bible uses the Abyss to describe a place or condition of restraint where someone is unable to act freely. It is not a place of eternal torment. It is not the final punishment of the wicked. Instead, it is a condition of confinement until Jehovah’s purpose is carried out.

What Does the Word Abyss Mean?

The Greek word translated “Abyss” is a·bysʹsos, which means “bottomless,” “very deep,” or “unfathomable.”

The idea is not that of a literal hole in the ground. Instead, it pictures a place where someone is completely restrained and unable to act.

The Abyss is a place of inactivity and confinement.

A person or spirit in the Abyss cannot simply leave whenever he wishes.

The Demons Feared the Abyss

One of the clearest references to the Abyss is found in Luke 8:30-31.

Jesus was speaking with demons that had possessed a man. The demons begged Jesus not to command them to go into the Abyss.

Why were they afraid?

Because the Abyss meant restraint.

The demons knew that if Jesus sent them into the Abyss, they would lose their freedom to influence people.

This shows that the Abyss is not a place of fire. The demons feared losing their activity and power, not being tortured.

Jesus Was in the Abyss

The Bible also connects Jesus with the Abyss.

Romans 10:6-7 speaks of bringing Christ up from the Abyss.

What does that mean?

After Jesus died, He was in the condition of death. He was in Hades (the common grave of mankind) until Jehovah resurrected Him.

In this sense, the Abyss refers to the state from which Jesus was raised.

Again, the idea is not torment. It is restraint and inactivity.

Jesus was dead. Then Jehovah restored Him to life.

The Abyss and Satan

One of the most important passages about the Abyss is found in Revelation 20:1-3.

There we read that Satan is seized and thrown into the Abyss for a thousand years.

The passage says he is shut up and sealed there so that he cannot deceive the nations.

Notice what happens.

Satan is not ruling.

Satan is not tormenting people.

Satan is not active.

He is restrained.

The Abyss is a condition where Satan is unable to carry out his work of deception.

The Abyss Is Different From the Lake of Fire

Some people confuse the Abyss with the Lake of Fire (the second death).

But the Bible shows they are different.

Satan is placed in the Abyss for a period of time. After the thousand years, he is released for a short time.

This means the Abyss is temporary.

The Lake of Fire is different.

The Lake of Fire represents the second death, which is final and permanent.

The Abyss is a temporary restraint.

The Lake of Fire is final destruction.

The Abyss Is Different From Tartarus

The Abyss and Tartarus are related because both involve restraint, but they are not exactly the same thing.

Tartarus (a condition of restraint for wicked angels) refers specifically to the fallen angels who sinned in the days before the Flood.

The Abyss is a broader term that refers to a condition of confinement or restraint.

For example, Satan is placed in the Abyss. Jesus is described as being brought up from the Abyss. Demons feared being sent into the Abyss.

The two terms overlap in some ways, but they are not identical.

What Does the Abyss Teach Us?

The Abyss teaches us that Jehovah has complete control over His creation.

Even powerful spirit creatures cannot escape His authority.

The demons feared the Abyss because they knew Jesus had authority over them.

Satan will be placed in the Abyss because Jehovah’s power is greater than his.

No enemy of God can act beyond the limits Jehovah allows.

This should give Christians confidence.

The Devil may be powerful, but he is not equal to God.

Jehovah rules over all creation.

The Abyss Gives Hope for the Future

The Bible teaches that Satan is the chief enemy of mankind. He has deceived many people and caused great suffering.

But Revelation 20 shows that his power will not continue forever.

During Christ’s thousand-year reign, Satan will be restrained in the Abyss.

He will no longer be able to mislead the nations.

Think about what that means.

No satanic deception.

No influence from the Devil.

No efforts to turn people away from Jehovah.

The Abyss is part of Jehovah’s plan to bring peace and righteousness to the earth.

Jehovah’s Purpose Will Succeed

The Abyss reminds us that Jehovah’s purpose cannot fail.

The Devil cannot stop it.

The demons cannot stop it.

Human governments cannot stop it.

Jehovah has the authority to restrain every enemy.

In the end, His purpose for a righteous earth will be accomplished.

The Abyss is one step in that process.

It shows that evil will be controlled, restrained, and eventually removed completely.

The Abyss is a place or condition of restraint and confinement. It is not a place of eternal torment. It is different from Hades, Gehenna, Tartarus, and the Lake of Fire.

The demons feared the Abyss because it meant losing their freedom. Satan will be placed in the Abyss during Christ’s thousand-year reign so that he can no longer deceive the nations.

The Abyss teaches that Jehovah has complete authority over all His enemies and that His purpose will ultimately succeed.
