Tartarus (pronounced Tar-tuh-rus) is a word found at 2 Peter 2:4. It is different from Sheol (the common grave of mankind), Hades (the Greek word for the common grave), and Gehenna (a symbol of complete destruction).

Tartarus does not refer to dead humans.

Tartarus refers to a condition of restraint for wicked angels.

Second Peter 2:4 says that God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into Tartarus and kept them under judgment.

This verse is not saying that these angels were thrown into a fiery place. It means they were lowered into a condition of darkness, shame, and restraint.

Tartarus Is About Wicked Angels

The Bible teaches that some angels sinned. These angels rebelled against Jehovah and left their proper place.

Jude 6 says that the angels who did not keep their proper position were kept in eternal bonds under deep darkness for judgment.

This helps us understand Tartarus.

Tartarus is not a place where humans go after death. It is a restrained condition for wicked angels who rebelled against God.

They are alive, but they are not free as faithful angels are free.

Tartarus Is Not Hellfire

Some people think Tartarus means hellfire. But that is not correct.

Tartarus is not Gehenna. Gehenna pictures complete destruction.

Tartarus is not Hades. Hades means the common grave.

Tartarus is not the Lake of Fire. The Lake of Fire means the second death.

Tartarus is a condition of restraint for wicked angels until their final judgment.

What Does “Darkness” Mean?

Second Peter 2:4 and Jude 6 connect these wicked angels with darkness.

Darkness here does not mean they are locked in a physical cave. It means they are cut off from Jehovah’s favor and from the light of truth.

They are in spiritual darkness.

They know their judgment is coming, and they cannot return to the holy position they once had.

Why Does This Matter?

Tartarus teaches us that Jehovah judges rebellion.

Even angels are not allowed to sin against God without judgment. Their power and position did not protect them.

This is a serious lesson.

Jehovah is patient, but He is not weak. He allows time for His purpose to move forward, but He will bring all wickedness to an end.

Tartarus and the Final Judgment

Tartarus is temporary. It is a condition before final judgment.

The wicked angels are restrained now, but their final end will come later.

Revelation 20:10 shows that the Devil will be judged. The Bible also teaches that his demons will share in judgment.

Their final end is not eternal rule. It is not victory. It is destruction.

Jesus Christ will bring Satan and his wicked angels to their end.

Tartarus shows that Jehovah judges rebellion, even among angels. These wicked spirits are kept under judgment until their final destruction.
