The Human Struggle with Self-Control

Many of the problems that humans face stem from an inability to control their desires, impulses, or actions. This inability to exercise self-control can lead to a variety of issues—moral, relational, or even spiritual. In fact, one of the central messages of the Bible is the importance of controlling oneself in order to live in harmony with God’s will. James writes: “But each one is tempted when he is drawn out and enticed by his own desire. Then the desire, when it has become fertile, gives birth to sin; in turn, sin, when it has been accomplished, brings forth death.” (James 1:14-15) This passage points to the human tendency to allow sinful desires to grow unchecked, resulting in actions that lead to spiritual death.

Self-control, or the lack thereof, has been a defining challenge for humanity since the beginning. Adam and Eve’s failure in the Garden of Eden was a clear instance of succumbing to desire rather than exercising self-restraint. Jehovah had commanded them not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and bad (Genesis 2:16-17), but the serpent’s temptation, coupled with their own desire, led to their fall. This original failure to exercise self-control has had far-reaching consequences for humanity, as it introduced sin into the world.

Biblical Examples of the Struggle with Self-Control

The Bible provides numerous examples of individuals who struggled with self-control. One striking case is that of Esau, who “for one meal sold his birthright.” (Hebrews 12:16) Esau’s lack of self-control in satisfying his immediate hunger led him to disregard the long-term value of his inheritance, which was his birthright as the firstborn. His decision was not just an act of impulsiveness; it reflected a deeper failure to prioritize spiritual matters over physical desires.

Similarly, King David, despite being described as a man “after Jehovah’s own heart” (1 Samuel 13:14), lacked self-control in his dealings with Bathsheba. His inability to resist temptation led him into adultery and ultimately to murder as he sought to cover up his sin. (2 Samuel 11:2-15) David’s example serves as a reminder that even those who are close to Jehovah and deeply spiritual are not immune to moments of weakness when they fail to exercise self-restraint.

However, these examples, though sobering, should also encourage us. David, for instance, was forgiven after he repented (2 Samuel 12:13), showing that Jehovah’s mercy is available to those who seek forgiveness. This should motivate us to keep striving for self-control, even if we stumble at times. Proverbs 24:16 reminds us: “For the righteous one may fall seven times, and he will get up again.”

The Difficulty of Manifesting Self-Control

Exercising self-control is not easy, and the Bible makes it clear that it is an ongoing challenge for everyone. Paul vividly described this internal struggle when he wrote: “For I do not do the good that I want to do, but the bad that I do not want to do is what I keep on practicing.” (Romans 7:19) Paul’s words resonate with anyone who has experienced the frustration of wanting to do what is right but feeling trapped by sinful tendencies.

The reason self-control is difficult is that we live in a world that encourages the pursuit of pleasure, self-indulgence, and the gratification of desires. Galatians 5:17 explains this struggle: “For the flesh is against the spirit in its desire, and the spirit against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other.” It is an internal battle between our desire to please Jehovah and the influence of the flesh, which seeks to satisfy immediate, worldly desires. This conflict is especially acute because we are all born with imperfection inherited from Adam, and this imperfection naturally inclines us toward sin. (Romans 5:12)

The Danger of Overestimating Our Own Self-Control

Many people believe they have no problem with self-control. However, this belief can often be an indication of spiritual pride or self-deception. Jeremiah 17:9 warns us: “The heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate.” This verse highlights the danger of trusting in one’s own strength or assuming that self-control is not an issue.

Consider Peter’s bold claim to Jesus before His arrest: “Even if all the others are stumbled, I will not be.” (Mark 14:29) Yet, despite his confidence, Peter denied Jesus three times. This serves as a powerful reminder that overconfidence in our own self-discipline can lead to failure. Jesus himself advised: “Keep on the watch and pray continually, so that you may not enter into temptation.” (Matthew 26:41) The key to maintaining self-control is to recognize our weaknesses and to rely on Jehovah’s strength rather than our own.

Why God’s People Take Self-Control Seriously

The subject of self-control is of particular interest to Jehovah’s Witnesses because they recognize that self-control is a fruit of the spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 lists “self-control” as one of the qualities produced in a Christian by Jehovah’s active force. Therefore, cultivating this quality is not only a personal responsibility but also a way to honor Jehovah and reflect His qualities. Peter emphasized the importance of self-control when he said: “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control.” (2 Peter 1:5-6)

The Bible’s advice on self-control remains valid today, as it was when it was first written. Christians are called to live in a way that is distinct from the world, and part of that distinction is the ability to exercise restraint, particularly in a world that increasingly promotes indulgence. Paul instructed the Corinthians: “Do you not know that the runners in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win it. Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.” (1 Corinthians 9:24-25)

No Reason to Despair While Cultivating Self-Control

While the struggle to develop self-control can be daunting, we have no reason to despair. The Bible encourages us to draw close to Jehovah, who provides the strength we need to cultivate this quality. Philippians 4:13 assures us: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me.” Though we may falter at times, Jehovah’s power enables us to continue striving for self-control and ultimately succeed in our efforts to live in a way that pleases Him.

Moreover, Jehovah is patient with our weaknesses. He understands our imperfection and shows us mercy as long as we are sincerely trying to improve. The psalmist wrote: “As a father shows mercy to his sons, Jehovah has shown mercy to those who fear him. For he well knows how we are formed, remembering that we are dust.” (Psalm 103:13-14) Jehovah’s understanding of our frailty should give us confidence to keep working on our self-control, knowing that He does not expect instant perfection but gradual growth.

Self-Control: A Requirement for Christian Life

Self-control is not an optional aspect of Christian life. Jesus’ followers are required to exhibit self-restraint in order to live in harmony with God’s will. Paul made this clear when he wrote: “But now you must get rid of all such things as these: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth.” (Colossians 3:8) Many of these behaviors stem from a lack of self-control, and Paul’s instruction indicates that self-discipline is a necessary part of putting on the new personality as Christians.

Peter likewise emphasized that self-control is an essential quality for maintaining spiritual stability. In 1 Peter 1:13, he urged believers: “Therefore, with your minds ready for action, be sober-minded, and set your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you.” This sober-mindedness, or self-control, is critical to a Christian’s ability to focus on spiritual matters and avoid distractions that could pull them away from Jehovah’s path.

Challenges to Exercising Self-Control

Exercising self-control can be particularly difficult for some individuals due to personal weaknesses or circumstances. For instance, those who struggle with addictive behaviors—whether related to alcohol, drugs, or even certain emotional reactions—may find that self-control is an especially challenging quality to develop. James 1:14 reminds us that “each one is tempted when he is drawn out and enticed by his own desire.” These personal desires and weaknesses make self-control a daily battle.

Some may have weaknesses that are deeply ingrained, making the process of overcoming them a long and arduous one. Romans 7:18 captures the frustration many feel: “For I know that in me, that is, in my flesh, dwells no good thing.” The apostle Paul was expressing the difficulty of fighting sinful inclinations even when one desires to do what is right. However, these weaknesses will be completely overcome in the future when Jehovah fully restores humanity to perfection. Isaiah 35:5-6 speaks of a time when Jehovah will eliminate all human weaknesses: “At that time the eyes of the blind will be opened, and the ears of the deaf will be unstopped. At that time the lame will leap like the deer.”

Exercising Self-Control in Sexual Matters

For many, self-control in sexual matters is one of the greatest challenges. In a world that promotes sexual freedom and indulgence, resisting temptation requires constant vigilance. Paul warned the Corinthians: “Flee from sexual immorality! Every other sin that a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body.” (1 Corinthians 6:18) The Bible clearly teaches that sexual relations are reserved for marriage between a man and a woman (Genesis 2:24), and maintaining self-control in this area is essential for remaining in God’s favor.

Those who are single and desire to marry may find it particularly difficult to remain chaste while waiting for the opportunity to marry. It is important for fellow Christians to offer support and encouragement, as Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us: “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow.”

Helping Those Struggling with Self-Control

When we see a brother or sister struggling to exercise self-control, we should be compassionate and offer help. Galatians 6:2 encourages us: “Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” Whether the struggle is with addictive behaviors, sexual temptation, or emotional responses, fellow Christians can provide spiritual encouragement and practical support. Paul also reminded the Thessalonians to “encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone.” (1 Thessalonians 5:14)

Married couples, too, must exercise self-control within the marriage arrangement. Paul instructed husbands and wives not to deprive each other of sexual relations, “except by mutual agreement for a time.” (1 Corinthians 7:5) This shows that even within marriage, self-control is required to ensure that both partners’ needs are met in a loving and respectful way.

Compassionate Support for Fellow Christians

Christians must approach one another with compassion and understanding when dealing with issues related to self-control. James 3:2 reminds us that “we all stumble in many ways.” Recognizing this fact should prevent us from being overly critical or harsh with others who struggle with self-discipline. Instead, we should follow the example of Jehovah, who is “merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.” (Psalm 103:8)

Psalm 130:3 offers comfort for those who fear that their lack of self-control has made them unacceptable to Jehovah: “If you, Jehovah, kept track of errors, O Jehovah, who could stand?” This verse highlights the depth of Jehovah’s mercy and forgiveness. As long as we are sincerely striving to improve, Jehovah will continue to work with us, helping us to develop greater self-control and overcome our weaknesses.

Applying Galatians 6:2, 5 in the Context of Self-Control

Galatians 6:2 encourages Christians to “carry one another’s burdens,” while Galatians 6:5 emphasizes that “each one will carry his own load.” These verses offer a balanced view of Christian responsibility. While we are called to help one another, each individual is ultimately responsible for his or her own spiritual progress. Self-control is an area in which we must work diligently, relying on Jehovah’s help while also being willing to make the necessary personal effort.

In conclusion, the development of self-control is not an easy task, but it is one that every Christian must take seriously. By relying on Jehovah’s strength, following the guidance of the Scriptures, and supporting one another, we can cultivate this essential fruit of the spirit and live lives that are pleasing to God.
