Introduction to Decision-Making Based on God’s Wisdom

In the Bible, Solomon wrote: “A wise person will listen and take in more instruction.” (Proverbs 1:5) Listening to sound counsel is essential for making wise decisions. Throughout our lives, we may have made choices that seemed wise at the time but later proved to be unwise because we did not listen to others’ advice or failed to consider biblical principles. Solomon, the king of ancient Israel, composed “three thousand proverbs” (1 Kings 4:32), many of which provide timeless guidance on how to live wisely. These proverbs were set down in the Scriptures to help us know wisdom, receive discipline, and discern understanding. (Proverbs 1:2, 3)

By following the wisdom found in the Bible, we can cultivate the ability to make decisions that honor Jehovah and bring about positive outcomes. The Bible offers numerous guidelines to assist in decision-making, from not relying solely on emotions to taking time to consider the long-term consequences of our choices. Let us examine these principles in detail, as they provide a solid foundation for making wise decisions in various aspects of life.

What Does It Mean to Use the Spirit of a Sound Mind When Making Decisions?

Paul wrote to Timothy: “For God gave us not a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and soundness of mind.” (2 Timothy 1:7) This “spirit of a sound mind” involves exercising self-control, restraint, and sober judgment. When faced with decisions, a sound mind means we avoid impulsiveness or rash actions, as these often lead to negative consequences. Instead, we seek to make decisions based on careful thought, guided by principles found in God’s Word.

Using the spirit of a sound mind includes seeking divine wisdom through prayer, reflecting on God’s principles, and considering the impact of our decisions on our lives and the lives of others. Wisdom involves applying knowledge in a way that pleases God and furthers His purposes. A sound mind helps us to weigh the factors at hand without letting emotions take control, allowing us to act rationally and with self-discipline.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

Do Not Make Decisions Based Solely on Your Emotions or Feelings

One of the greatest dangers in decision-making is allowing emotions or feelings to dominate our reasoning. The Bible reminds us that “the heart is more treacherous than anything else and is desperate.” (Jeremiah 17:9) Emotions such as anger, fear, or even excitement can cloud our judgment and lead us to make decisions we later regret. Instead of making hasty choices driven by emotion, it is crucial to pause, pray, and reflect.

We are also reminded in Proverbs 28:26: “He that is trusting in his own heart is stupid, but he that is walking in wisdom is the one that will escape.” Making decisions based on feelings alone can be shortsighted, as our emotions may not always align with what is right or beneficial in the long term. A person who walks in wisdom will escape the pitfalls of emotional decision-making by turning to the Bible for guidance and exercising sound judgment.

Pray for Wisdom

James 1:5 provides a straightforward yet powerful directive: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” Jehovah desires that His servants make wise decisions, and He is willing to provide the necessary wisdom if we ask for it. When we pray for wisdom, we demonstrate humility and a recognition that we cannot rely solely on our own understanding.

However, praying for wisdom is not merely asking for direction in a vacuum. It involves a heart that is receptive to God’s Word and His guiding principles. Prayer also opens the door for Jehovah’s guidance as we examine His Scriptures, applying them in a way that leads to sound decision-making. A wise decision is often the product of both prayer and action, as we will explore next.

Act on Your Prayer by Doing Research

Praying for wisdom is vital, but we must also act in harmony with our prayers by doing thorough research. Proverbs 2:3-5 says: “If you keep seeking for it as for silver, and as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the fear of Jehovah, and find the knowledge of God.” This indicates that wisdom is something that must be actively sought out. After praying for wisdom, we can research Bible-based counsel on the matter at hand, consult knowledgeable individuals, and consider multiple sources of information.

Jesus emphasized the importance of building on a solid foundation when making decisions, likening it to a man building his house on a rock. (Matthew 7:24-27) If we want to make wise decisions, we must base our choices on solid research and understanding, carefully considering all relevant information. Whether it’s a financial decision, a relationship matter, or a spiritual choice, diligent research is key to ensuring that our decisions align with God’s principles and are well-informed.

Weigh All the Factors

“Where there is no guidance, the people fall, but in the multitude of counselors, there is victory.” (Proverbs 11:14) Wise decisions are rarely made in isolation. It is important to weigh all factors by seeking input from others, especially those with experience or spiritual maturity. These individuals can offer perspectives we may not have considered and help us view the decision from a different angle.

Weighing all the factors also involves considering how a decision may affect different aspects of life, such as our spiritual well-being, family relationships, and responsibilities. The Bible encourages us to “keep a tight grip on your wisdom and discernment.” (Proverbs 3:21) By balancing all the factors, we ensure that we are not neglecting any important considerations that could impact the outcome of our choices.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Consider Long-Term Consequences

“Be wise, my son, and make my heart rejoice,” wrote Solomon in Proverbs 27:11. Part of wisdom is looking beyond the immediate effects of a decision and considering its long-term consequences. This principle applies to every area of life, whether financial decisions, career choices, or personal relationships. A short-term gain may seem appealing, but if it leads to long-term problems, it is not a wise choice.

For instance, consider Esau, who sold his birthright for a single meal. (Hebrews 12:16) Esau made a hasty decision based on immediate physical hunger, and the long-term consequence was the loss of his inheritance. Similarly, when we make decisions, it is crucial to ask, “How will this affect my future? What will be the long-term spiritual, emotional, or financial consequences?” By doing so, we can avoid many regrets and ensure that we are making choices that honor Jehovah and benefit us in the future.

Take Sufficient Time

Solomon advised: “The plans of the diligent surely lead to success, but everyone who is hasty comes surely to poverty.” (Proverbs 21:5) Rushed decisions often lead to mistakes. Taking the necessary time to reflect, gather information, and consult others will ensure that our decision is based on sound reasoning rather than haste. Even in situations where a quick decision is needed, taking a moment to pray and ask for guidance can make a significant difference.

By allowing sufficient time for the decision-making process, we demonstrate patience, a quality that reflects Jehovah’s own patience with us. Additionally, by not rushing, we are better able to discern any potential pitfalls or obstacles that may not have been immediately apparent.

Be Open to Counsel

Proverbs 19:20 says: “Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you may be wise the rest of your days.” A person who is open to counsel demonstrates humility and the desire to learn. Being open to counsel does not mean blindly following the advice of others, but it does mean valuing input from those with spiritual maturity, life experience, and biblical knowledge.

Wise decision-makers seek counsel from those who are well-versed in the Scriptures and have demonstrated wisdom in their own lives. Proverbs 12:15 contrasts the foolish with the wise: “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but a wise man listens to advice.” Therefore, if we want to make wise decisions, we should be willing to seek and listen to advice from trusted sources.

Heed a Biblically Well-Trained Conscience

Our conscience, trained by God’s Word, plays a vital role in decision-making. Paul wrote in Romans 9:1: “I am speaking the truth in Christ—I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit.” A biblically trained conscience helps us navigate decisions where specific Scriptures may not directly address the issue. Through regular study of the Bible and applying its principles, our conscience becomes a reliable guide in decision-making.

The apostle Peter advised Christians to maintain a clear conscience before God. (1 Peter 3:16) This means that when we make decisions, we should ensure that our conscience, trained by biblical principles, does not convict us of wrongdoing or compromise. By doing so, we maintain spiritual integrity and can proceed with confidence that our decision is in harmony with God’s will.

How Your Decisions Affect Others

A wise decision-maker also considers how their choices will affect others. Paul wrote in Philippians 2:3-4: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves.” Every decision we make, whether in our family, congregation, or workplace, has the potential to impact those around us. It is important to ask, “Will my decision bring honor to Jehovah? Will it benefit others, or will it cause harm?”

The Bible encourages us to be considerate of others and to think about how our choices reflect on our Christian faith. Jesus taught that the two greatest commandments are to love Jehovah and to love our neighbor as ourselves. (Matthew 22:37-39) Thus, a wise decision-maker will consider how their actions align with these commandments and strive to make decisions that reflect love for others.

Wisely Make the Greatest Decision

The greatest decision anyone can make in life is to serve Jehovah and follow His ways. Joshua declared: “Now if it is bad in your eyes to serve Jehovah, choose for yourselves today whom you will serve . . . As for me and my household, we will serve Jehovah.” (Joshua 24:15) This decision shapes all other decisions we make, from how we spend our time to how we interact with others.

Choosing to serve Jehovah involves more than just an emotional response. It requires deliberate thought, prayer, and commitment to living according to His will. Jesus stated: “No one can slave for two masters.” (Matthew 6:24) To make this decision wisely, we must weigh the cost and be fully devoted to following God’s standards in all aspects of life.

Decide for Life!

In Deuteronomy 30:19, Moses told the Israelites: “I have put life and death before you, the blessing and the curse; and you must choose life.” Choosing life means making decisions that lead to eternal blessings, rather than temporary or worldly gain. By choosing to follow Jehovah and applying biblical wisdom, we are deciding for eternal life.

This life-transforming decision affects everything—from the daily choices we make to the larger life decisions that define our path. Ultimately, deciding for life involves making choices that align with Jehovah’s purpose for humanity and demonstrate our commitment to His will.

Should I Change a Decision I Have Already Made?

There are times when a decision may need to be reconsidered. Proverbs 14:12 reminds us: “There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.” If we realize that a decision we made was not based on biblical wisdom or was influenced by emotions rather than sound judgment, it is wise to re-evaluate the decision and, if necessary, make changes.

Changing a decision does not indicate weakness but rather humility and a desire to follow Jehovah’s guidance more closely. David, for example, made the wise decision to change his course of action when he realized that his initial decision would not honor God. (1 Samuel 24:5-7) In the same way, we must be willing to change when it becomes clear that our original decision was not aligned with God’s will.

What if I Made a Bad Decision That I Cannot Change?

Sometimes, the decisions we make cannot be reversed, and we must live with the consequences. In such cases, it is important to seek forgiveness if the decision caused harm and to learn from the experience. Jehovah is merciful and willing to forgive when we repent of unwise choices and strive to make better decisions in the future. (Psalm 103:12, 13)

Even when we cannot change the past, we can move forward by applying biblical principles and making wiser decisions in the future. Paul encouraged Christians to “forget what lies behind and strain forward to what lies ahead.” (Philippians 3:13) Acknowledging past mistakes allows us to grow in wisdom and avoid repeating the same errors, ultimately leading to spiritual maturity and a closer relationship with Jehovah.
