Removing the Stain of Sin
AFTER Jehovah God had finished his creation of the universe, earth, and man, he looked at all that he had made and declared it “very good.” (Gen. 1:31) His creation was flawless. (Deut. 32:4) When sin disrupted this righteous design, it was akin to a malignant cell infecting a healthy body.
Humans haven’t been the only ones to rebel against God; even angels have sinned. (2 Pet. 2:4) It was a spirit creature, Satan, who first led Adam and Eve astray. (John 8:43, 44) These wicked spirits, having made a deliberate choice, are beyond redemption. Their sin is inexcusable, and they will be eradicated from the universe in due time.—Matt. 25:41.
Adam and Eve, though created perfect, chose to sin. They voluntarily became slaves to sin, as Jesus explained: “everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin.” (John 8:34) Ultimately, they met death because of their imperfection caused by sin.—Gen. 3:19; 5:5.
Our situation differs. We are slaves to sin, but not entirely by choice. We were born into sin. (Rom. 5:12; 7:14) Thankfully, Jehovah’s love and wisdom provide a way for us to escape this bondage.
Solving the Problem
Jehovah displayed his acceptance of redemption in his dealings with Israel. For instance, an Israelite could be ransomed from slavery by a relative. (Lev. 25:47-49) The price was exact, ensuring justice.
He also applied the principle of equivalence in punishment. If someone harmed another, they must suffer similarly. This law specified “life for life, eye for eye,” etc. (Ex. 21:23-25) Similarly, mankind’s redemption from sin had to align with justice. The price was significant, as Adam’s forfeited life was perfect and valuable.
Nothing man owns can compare to this value. Even the wealthiest cannot buy eternal life. The psalmist noted that man cannot redeem another, for it’s too costly and always fails. (Ps. 49:7-9) Hence, help had to come from beyond humanity.
God foretold of a “seed” who would counter the wicked influence leading mankind into sin. (Gen. 3:15) This revelation eventually pointed to Joseph and Mary, leading to the birth of Jesus, who would save his people from their sins. (Matt. 1:20, 21)
Jesus was perfect, having had a prehuman existence in heaven. (John 1:1-3, 14) He did not inherit sin and never sinned. (1 Pet. 2:22; Heb. 7:26) His perfect life provided the exact price for mankind’s redemption. (1 Tim. 2:6) Jesus’ sacrifice has the potential to make all alive again. (1 Cor. 15:22; Gal. 1:4)
Relief from Sin
Now, there is a way out for humanity! The redemptive price is paid. However, not everyone will be automatically freed. Active faith in Jesus is required for eternal life. (John 3:16)
Even now, those who accept Jesus’ sacrifice gain benefits. Though still imperfect, they can seek forgiveness through Jesus’ sacrifice. (1 John 1:7-9; 2:1, 2)
Does this mean sin doesn’t matter anymore? No, we must fight sinful tendencies. (Heb. 1:9; 1 Cor. 9:27) If we don’t, we may face judgment and destruction. (Heb. 10:26, 27)
Finally, those who truly strive to escape sin can look forward to a renewed earth free from sin. (Isa. 11:9; Ps. 37:10, 11) All bad results of sin will be eradicated. (Rev. 21:3, 4) Jehovah’s purpose for the earth will be fully achieved. (Matt. 6:9, 10)
Indeed, Jesus’ ransom sacrifice provides a precious opportunity to escape sin’s bondage. Thus, the psalmist’s advice resonates: “Depart from evil, and do good; And dwell for evermore. For Jehovah loves justice, And forsakes not his holy ones; They are preserved forever: But the seed of the wicked shall be cut off.”—Ps. 37:27, 28.
