TEENS – Death Does Not Get Back at Those Who Hurt You

THE OUTSIDER thirteen-reasons-to-keep-living_021 Waging War - Heather Freeman IS THERE A REBEL IN THE HOUSE

So What’s Next?

Great question; no one knows. People speculate all of the time about what happens next. There are several thoughts you may have about this part of your plan. After all, many who commit suicide have thought about it, ruminated on it, and played it out in their mind over and over before their first attempt. Have you contemplated what will happen after you die? I’m sure you have. I was doing a group once on suicide, and one of the group members shared about how she had contemplated committing suicide to punish her mother. She talked about how she made plans for how her mom would find her and was very precise and specific that every detail was set so that her mom would have a traumatic experience in finding her daughter dead. When asked what her mom did to her to deserve so much pain, she explained her reasons that were based on her emotions on the situation; based on her assumptions that she believed to be true, having never spoken to her mother about it. The group members processed with her about this, and by the end of the group, she was so grateful that she had never gone through with her plan because she would have been punishing her mother for things she could not control, even though she wished she had been able to.

Many people that I have found who have attempted and survived were so very glad that they lived because they get to see what happens next and realize that suicide was never the answer. It just seemed that way in the moment. I have a question for you; do you believe that another person can drive you to suicide? Can another’s actions, words, presence, or mistakes control you? Do you believe that you can blame another for your actions? If others can control you, then yes, you can blame them for what you do. They made you do it right? You had no choice. If they had not done this or that, you would still be here? It’s a scary thing to think that any action made by another could be blamed for someone’s choice. I know I have made mistakes in every aspect of my life; as a mother, a wife, a sister, a daughter, a friend, a colleague, and a therapist. I know that tomorrow I will likely make any number of mistakes. It’s a terrifying reality, especially when coupled with the idea that we could be blamed for someone’s reaction to our choices.

This world that we live in is full of actions and reactions.  Sharon cuts Brad off in traffic, accidentally. Brad then flips Sharon off and curses her. Distracted, Brad accidentally spills his coffee in his lap and swerves into the opposing lane killing a husband, wife, and their small child. Is their death Sharon’s fault? It is a tough question to ask. Blaming another for one’s choice is much like this. If it is Sharon’s fault, then we should all be going to the police for hit and runs for we are all guilty of having been rude, mean, or a bully. We absolutely have an impact on our environment just as our environment has an impact on us, but where do you draw the line of responsibility? Thinking that your suicide will punish those that hurt you indicates that you feel your actions are a direct result, maybe are even caused by the actions of another. Is this the truth? Have you no control of your choice to kill yourself? You were led to this only option because they hurt you, made fun of you, don’t love you, and rejected you? Their actions which they are possibly not even aware of, have led you to this one option and there are no other possible ways that you can respond to these events other than to take your life?

REASONABLE FAITH Why Me_ FEARLESS-1

Killing yourself is a choice you make, but you make it, maybe thinking this is the only way out, the only way to make them realize how much they have hurt you. Let me ask you honestly if they didn’t have the empathy to think about how you were led to feel when you were alive, do you really think you being dead and gone will make them have more empathy for you now? If you are dead and gone, they will have no reason to think of you and no reason to be held accountable if they did do something to hurt you. Nothing will be resolved, and they will be able to go on with their lives never giving you a second thought, never having to be held accountable for the choices they made or the mistakes that they made because you will no longer be there to speak about how they led you to feel. Your letter will likely never make it to them, and if it does, they can just toss it to the side because you won’t be there to get them to read it or to urge them to hear you and resolve the problem.

Suicide Solves Nothing

“Your death is not the absence of your problems, but the absence of you,” a patient once said. The problem will still remain and will never be resolved because the person who could have helped solve and address the problem is gone. The pain can never be processed and vindicated, the person who maybe did hurt you can never learn from their mistakes, and you will have died never seeing the best part of the conflict, the resolution. When you blame another person for your choices, you give all of your power away. You essentially become a puppet on a string, and you make all of those who hurt you, your puppeteer. They control you, they make you do this to yourself, and they led you to this only outcome. It is their fault you are here, and they could have solved everything if they had only not done these things to you. You have essentially just bowed down before all of those who have ever been rude to you or hurt you, and given them power over your choices and power over if this ever gets resolved. You don’t punish others by dying, you allow them to continue what they are doing, and you help them avoid accountability for their actions. There will be no lawsuit because in a court of law it is known that no one can make you do anything.

I fear that in our society, the truth gets corrupted so quickly and so easily with social media, the news, and the access to a global stage. Corrupted is a strong word. When I think of it, I think of change, or rather a transformation, but in a negative way and not by a knowledgeable choice. It is like an innocent person learning about things that they would never have known, but not being forced to learn about them. Rather having someone plant curiosity in their mind so that they seek, on their own, more information and the other person never had to do anything. This world so often can corrupt us to things that we know at face-value are not right, but when the message is subtle, and told by the right people, and said in just the right way with the right emotions, then suddenly what we know to be wrong sounds an awful lot like right, and black and white quickly turns to grey. Suicide requires you to be corrupted, so corrupted that your sense of control has been stripped from you. You believe that others’ actions control you. Their words control you. Their feeling about you and their acceptance of you controls you. Suicide requires that you cease to believe what you know to be true, to believe instead what you knew to be wrong.

HOW TO OVERCOME YOUR BAD HABITS-1 GOD WILL GET YOU THROUGH THIS YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Impact: Environment and Us

Our environment does impact us, but you have the power to decide how much and in what way. Another can say things to you that are hurtful all day long, but you have the power to decide how you will respond. Do you choose to believe that because another said you were not worth living, that you really aren’t worth living? Or do you choose to believe that they were saying something to hurt you and it tells everyone much more about where they are in life than it would ever say about you? We think that people choose to hurt us for a reason. Sometimes people just hurt the person that happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It doesn’t satisfy our feelings that we must have been in control in some way to prevent this or to change it. So often we like to think that we can control our lives, but we can’t. We can only control ourselves. We cannot change the actions of another, just as they cannot change ours. We like to have control of certain situations but shy away when we have to control ourselves because recognizing that we have control over ourselves puts a great deal of responsibility on our shoulders. It means we have to own our positive choices and our negative ones. We have to face that we chose to do that and it was our choice and ours alone, not the choices of another. We like to control other people. It is a bit of a contradiction. We like to control others, but we don’t like the responsibility that we have full control over ourselves.

We think that person molested me so I must have done something to encourage them, to make them think that it was okay to do it, to allow them to choose me. We are so quick to accept the responsibility for another’s choices. We take control of things we cannot control, the actions of another, but we fail to recognize the only thing we can control is ourselves. We try to attribute their actions as having somehow been caused by our not being enough and thereby attempt to blame ourselves. We assume that their actions say something about our self-worth, self-esteem, or self-image, but we fail to recognize that how we respond to their actions, is the only thing that indicates anything about us. This is a corrupted version of the truth, a faulty belief. You cannot control what another person does, and nothing you do can make a person respond in any way. They have control of what they do, but we control how we respond. Our actions definitely impact others as their actions impact us, but we cannot control one another. I agree with the thought that we should all work to impact one another positively. We should strive to make others feel loved, important, and unique. We cannot discount our responsibility for our actions and that our actions do have consequences, not only for ourselves but on others, but we cannot blame our choices on anyone but ourselves because we all have to live together in this world and we all have a choice how we respond to adversity and struggle.

Giving It One More Chance

Have you put life and all of your peers on trial? Have you given them one more day to pick up on the hints that you drop to indicate you are suffering in hopes that someone will notice? Do you look around as you walk through the halls hoping they will notice the cuts on your arms, the bags under your eyes from sleep deprivation, and your lack of motivation to be you anymore? Do you hope someone will just notice for one moment and ask you if you are okay? I wonder, if they asked you, would you be 100% honest with them or would you do the typical, “I’m good,” answer as you continue walking? We want people to notice, but then we shy away when they do like it makes us uncomfortable that they actually did notice it; maybe even get mad that they noticed. Giving people one more chance and dropping hints not only sets you up for failure but its sets the people that love you, because they don’t understand your hints. This makes you feel unimportant to them as though, their loving you should mean they can read your mind, and it sets them up for failure because they will feel bad they didn’t meet the expectation you had for them that you never told them about. It’s like being tested and not being aware there was a test; kind of seems unfair. This can cause marriages to experience stress and struggle, leaving you feeling unnoticed and unloved and your spouse feeling like a failure for not making you happy. The saddest part of dropping hints and having others fail to see those hints be interpreted as their lack of care is that this exchange is avoidable. The way to avoid this is open communication.

I can guarantee you that if you were to go to your counselor and tell them that you had thoughts and plans to kill yourself because of how you are feeling that they would be taking the time to talk to you and help you get the necessary services to keep you safe. The issues that you faced could be resolved; your family could be made aware of your struggles and suffering and the right people, people like me, could come along side you and walk with you through the struggle, no longer having to face it alone. People cannot meet your needs if they don’t know about them. It is unfair for anyone to be judged as having not cared, for the simple fact that they did not see the hints that were dropped. We are all selfish and get caught up. I say it every time I see my family and how much we have all grown up and moved on in our lives, that I need to take the time to see them more and not get so caught up with life. We are all guilty of taking the good things for granted until we don’t have them anymore. We try not to do this, but this busy world that we live in, the constant connections we have, lead us almost to lose our connections. Do you spend more time on Facebook than you do face-to-face? We are all guilty of getting caught up in our own lives, you and me included. Killing yourself because no one noticed the hints you dropped is not the answer. If you want others to notice you, communicate this. If you feel cast aside because your family is so wrapped up in their business, their finances, their daily stresses, or each other, then scream at the top of your lungs to get them to notice. They will notice, and then you are still there to see that they do care. That there are more people in this world that care, they just didn’t realize they weren’t showing it as you needed them to. We are all dense and can be dim-witted. You have to spell it out sometimes. This doesn’t mean we don’t care. It just means we didn’t know.

Suicide: The Ultimate Thief

When you give your control away, there are always consequences. It is like going from having an anchor keeping you stable, to having no anchor tossed by the waves. This world’s opinion changes so rapidly on what is considered acceptable. We argue over if the dress is blue or if it is gold. We all have different opinions, and if your opinion of yourself, of what is right and wrong, or if you deserve to live or not is dictated by another’s treatment of you, then you will be bouncing around like a ping-pong ball. You have to anchor yourself in what you believe to be right, what you know about yourself regardless of another’s actions or words, and you have to choose to believe it every day; even when it gets tough. If you let another decide your choices, you will find that you have lost so much of what makes this world and life truly amazing.

I’m a mother. I speak love to my daughter every day, reminding her constantly that she is amazing, beautiful, perfect in every way, and wonderfully made. I want the same things in life for you that I want for her. I want her to grow up confident that she has a purpose, that she is loved, and that she is worth more than anything in this world. I want her to believe that she is to be respected just like she is to respect others. I want her to be carefree and light-hearted, not burdened with the stresses of this world. I want her to wear whatever she feels comfortable in, not aiming to please others. I want her to dance around the living room, outside, anywhere in this world because it makes her happy and she does not care about what another may say about her because she knows in her heart that she is beautiful. I don’t want her to have to strive for others acceptance because she believes in her heart that she is worthy and wonderful and if they cannot see that, then she feels sorry for them. I want her to realize that when another person hurts her or says mean things to her, it shows that they are really hurting on the inside because as ugly as we can be with our actions, there is a greater ugliness inside that we are battling. I want her to believe she can do whatever she puts her mind to and strive to achieve it no matter what obstacle may come in her way. What she believes in her heart to be true cannot be corrupted because she will not allow it to be. I want her to be strong, resilient, and care-free.

Someday, I want her to feel the rush of the ocean and realize how small she is in this big world. I want her to see the world and all the beauty that is in it, the colors, the lands, the people, the animals, and appreciate how vast and eclectic this earth really is. I want her to appreciate her life and love her family because she recognizes, not all are blessed as she is. I want her to feel the satisfaction of a hard day of work someday, feel the soreness of her muscles, and appreciate perseverance over struggle because she was able to achieve what she never dreamed capable. I want her to meet a man someday that will love her the way her father loves me. I want her to feel the undefinable love of having a child with him and I want her to grow in love with him every day, even through struggle, which is the greatest miracle. I want her to grow old one day and look back over her life smiling as she swings on a porch swing because she lived a full life. I want that for you. This is what suicide steals from you. It whispers that people will finally see how they have hurt you. You will punish them all by making them see that they caused you to do this to yourself. I promise you it won’t, and you will be saying goodbye to an amazing life because you hoped others would hear the message of your actions when they will only shake their head and say, “How sad.” You will be the news of the moment, but that will be it. You will have no children to remember you, no grandchildren, and you will have left no mark on this world. You will have a legacy of suicide and not of life and all that you experienced and accomplished in it. You will leave having punished only those that loved you because those that hurt you won’t give it a second thought. It will have been in vain.

Where Do We Go From Here

Choose Life. Choose Love. Choose a Future of Hope and Happiness. You may not see it now, but just because you cannot see it, does not mean it is not there. I cannot see the air, but I breathe it every day, and I depend on it to be there to keep me alive. Choose your future children, your future significant other, your future mark on this world, your future legacy. Choose to control you instead of taking control of others and suggesting that others control you. Take control of your life. What can they really do to you? You decide. They can say what they want; they can spread rumors if they want. They can knock your books out of your hands and stuff you in the locker if they want but guess who will be laughing when you go on in life to do bigger and better things than to be stuck in high school. They can do what they want, but you will overcome, and you will persevere because you know who you are and what you want to do in this life. You will not be stuck in high school forever. You are going to go on and rock this world. You are better than how they treat you, and though they don’t know it yet, you do, and they will someday see it. It takes no strength to knock someone down when they are already down. It takes all the strength in the world to keep walking when they are trying to make you crawl. I believe in you. You are not alone. Find that oppositional bone in your body, the one that tells everyone else to get out of your way, because you are about to achieve your goals and make your life mean something, and no one in this world can stop you no matter how hard they try.

Herein Andrews will answer the “why.” He will address whether God is responsible for the suffering we see. He will also delve into whether God’s foreknowledge is compatible with our having free will. He will also discuss how the work of the Holy Spirit and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit should be understood in the light of wickedness. BLESSED IN SATAN'S WORLDBLESSED BY GOD IN SATAN’S WORLD How All Things Are Working for Your Good

All of us will go through difficult times that we may not fully understand. The apostle Paul wrote, “in the last days difficult times will come.” (2 Tim. 3:1) Those difficulties are part of the human imperfection (Rom. 5:12) and living in a fallen world that is ruled by Satan (2 Cor. 4:3-4). But when we find ourselves in such a place, it’s crucial that we realize God has given us a way out. (1 Cor. 10:13) Edward Andrews writes that if we remain steadfast in our faith and apply God’s Word correctly when we go through difficult times, we will not only grow spiritually, but we will …

CHRISTIANS AND GOVERNMENT: A Biblical Point of View

Government affects our daily lives, and Christians need to think about how to apply biblical principles to politics and government. This book provides an overview of the biblical principles relating to what the apostle Paul calls “governing authorities” (i.e., government) with specific chapters dealing with the founding principles of the American government. This includes an examination of the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Federalist Papers.

Christian Apologetics and Evangelism

REASONABLE FAITHREASONABLE FAITH: Saving Those Who Doubt

Inside of some Christians unbeknownst to their family, friends or the church, they are screaming, “I doubt, I doubt, I have very grave doubts!” Ours is an age of doubt. Skepticism has become fashionable. We are urged to question everything: especially the existence of God and the truthfulness of his Word, the Bible. A SUBSTANTIAL PORTION of REASONABLE FAITH is on healing for the elements of emotional doubt. However, much attention is given to more evidenced-based chapters in our pursuit of overcoming any fears or doubts that we may have or that may creep up on us in the future.

Agabus is a mysterious prophetic figure that appears only twice in the book of Acts. Though his role is minor, he is a significant figure in a great debate between cessationists and continualists. On one side are those who believe that the gift of prophecy is on par with the inspired Scriptures, infallible, and has ceased. On the other side are those who define it as fallible and non-revelatory speech that continues today in the life of the church. Proponents of both camps attempt to claim …
