Evangelism in Decline: The Call for a Faithful Witness

For many believers, evangelism has become an area of neglect, resulting in the diminishing presence of biblical witness in local communities. Christ’s mandate, found in Matthew 28:19-20, calls Christians to “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” This command is not limited to pastors or clergy but is directed to every believer, requiring both active engagement in sharing the gospel and thorough understanding of God’s Word. Sadly, many Christians today are unable to explain or defend even foundational doctrines, often leading to a shallow understanding and application of the Bible in their lives.

Despite the Apostle Peter’s encouragement to “always be prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you” (1 Peter 3:15), countless congregations today fall short in preparing their members for such encounters. Many churches lack structured training in evangelism, resulting in a diminished ability to communicate the gospel effectively. The consequences of this are significant: without a faithful and knowledgeable Christian witness, communities miss the essential truths of salvation. Consequently, church attendance declines, while members become disillusioned, seeing faith as a private sentiment rather than a powerful, life-changing force.

A Decline in Personal Bible Study and Spiritual Discipline

Personal Bible study and preparation for worship have also declined, leading to a weak foundation in biblical knowledge and spiritual maturity. The psalmist declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105), emphasizing the necessity of regular engagement with Scripture to discern Jehovah’s will. Yet, many Christians today rarely dedicate consistent time to personal study, viewing Bible reading as a duty rather than a lifeline for spiritual sustenance and growth. As a result, believers become susceptible to doctrinal errors and cultural trends that dilute biblical truth, as warned in 2 Timothy 4:3-4: “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.”

This drift is reflected in the number of Christians who rely on shallow, grade-level Bible study materials rather than engaging deeply with Scripture. The Apostle Paul advised Timothy to “do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). A robust understanding of Scripture is essential for both personal spiritual growth and the effectiveness of one’s witness to others. However, when believers settle for superficial knowledge, they lack discernment and become spiritually immature, unable to withstand the challenges posed by secular ideologies or false teachings.

Moral and Ethical Challenges Within the Church

The declining emphasis on moral and ethical standards among professed believers is another alarming trend, with worldly behaviors infiltrating the church. The Apostle Paul’s exhortation in Romans 12:2 — “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” — underscores the importance of living distinctly as followers of Christ. However, in many churches today, there is little distinction between the behavior of believers and that of the world. Teenagers engage in disrespectful behaviors during services, congregants neglect church teachings in their personal lives, and many believers live lives that blend secular values with occasional church attendance.

This compromise with worldly standards is evident in the way some members dress and conduct themselves, both inside and outside of the church. Jesus’ warning in Matthew 7:15-16 is poignant here: “Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will recognize them by their fruits.” When churchgoers reflect the world rather than the character of Christ, the authenticity of their witness is undermined, causing others to question the validity of their faith.

REASONING FROM THE SCRIPTURES APOLOGETICS

The Focus on Social Issues Over Discipleship

The shift of many churches towards social issues rather than discipleship reflects a departure from Christ’s command to prioritize the kingdom of God. Jesus cautioned in John 18:36, “My kingdom is not of this world,” highlighting the spiritual nature of His mission. Yet, numerous churches invest heavily in social justice initiatives, viewing them as a substitute for biblical evangelism and discipleship. While addressing social concerns can demonstrate Christ’s love in action, it should never replace the central mission of making disciples and proclaiming the gospel.

This emphasis on social issues often causes members to become more politically engaged than spiritually focused, mistaking patriotism or political activism for genuine faith. When Christians prioritize national allegiance or political ideology over the principles of God’s kingdom, they lose sight of the true purpose of the church. As Paul wrote to the Philippians, “But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20).

The Division of Denominations and Fragmentation of Doctrine

With over 41,000 denominations worldwide, the disunity among Christians is a glaring contradiction to Jesus’ prayer for unity in John 17:21, “that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” This division stems not only from doctrinal disagreements but also from individualistic attitudes and a lack of accountability. Many believers hold conflicting views within the same congregation, diminishing the clarity and power of their witness.

The Apostle Paul warned against the dangers of doctrinal division in 1 Corinthians 1:10, urging believers “that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” Churches that tolerate doctrinal discrepancies or avoid teaching on challenging topics for fear of offending members compromise their integrity, leading to confusion and weakened conviction among believers.

The Danger of Compromised Worship Practices

In an attempt to attract a younger demographic, some churches have adopted contemporary music styles and casual worship settings. However, when worship becomes overly focused on entertainment, the reverence due to Jehovah is compromised. Jesus reminds believers in John 4:24 that “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” Worship should be centered on glorifying Jehovah and aligning with His will, not on mirroring secular trends or catering to human preferences.

Churches that introduce worldly practices into worship risk distracting members from the true purpose of gathering together. As 1 John 2:15 cautions, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” Worship should lift the heart and mind toward God, fostering a sense of holiness and respect rather than emulating entertainment venues.

The Consequences of Low Expectations Among Leaders

In many congregations, the low expectations of church leaders contribute to the spiritual apathy of their members. Jesus set a high standard for discipleship, declaring, “Whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me” (Matthew 10:38). However, when pastors and church leaders lower the standard of commitment, congregants become complacent, seeing faith as a casual part of their lives rather than a serious commitment.

A leader’s failure to uphold high expectations weakens the congregation, as Proverbs 29:18 warns: “Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.” When church members are encouraged to live up to a high standard of faithfulness, they are motivated to strive for spiritual maturity, showing greater dedication in their walk with Christ.

Lukewarm Faith and the Narrow Path

Jesus foretold a time when faith would be scarce upon His return, as seen in Luke 18:8: “However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find the faith on the earth?” This prophetic question challenges Christians to examine whether they are walking the narrow path, as Jesus described in Matthew 7:13-14: “For the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

Many who profess Christianity today live with one foot in the world and one in the church, failing to fully commit to the path of righteousness. Revelation 3:16 issues a stark warning against such lukewarm faith: “So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.” Believers must heed this call to choose a life fully committed to Christ, forsaking all that is contrary to His teachings.

Genuine Discipleship: Doing the Will of the Father

The ultimate question for each believer is whether they are doing the will of the Father, as highlighted in Matthew 7:21: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” True discipleship requires action, obedience, and faithfulness, not merely verbal professions of faith.

The Apostle John reinforces this point in 1 John 2:17: “The world is passing away, and its lusts; but the one who does the will of God remains forever.” To follow the will of the Father means to love Him wholeheartedly, study His Word diligently, and uphold His standards in every aspect of life. It is a commitment to live distinct from the world, reflecting Christ’s light in every word, thought, and action.

The Need for Revival and a Return to Biblical Foundations

In examining the state of the church, it is evident that a return to biblical foundations is necessary. The church is called to be “the pillar and foundation of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15), not a social club or a political platform. Believers must seek genuine transformation through the renewal of their minds, embracing Jehovah’s will rather than conforming to secular values. The church’s role is to uphold God’s truth and make disciples, calling all to repentance and faithfulness.
