How Is Love for God Shown Through Obedience? – 1 John 5:3

1 John 5:3 declares, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.” In this succinct statement, the Apostle John captures a powerful and recurring biblical truth: love for God is not merely emotional or theoretical—it is displayed through obedience. Modern culture, even within Christian circles, has largely redefined love into something subjective, divorced from action and truth. But the Word of God consistently ties love to obedience, submission, and alignment with divine will.

Biblical Love Is Defined by Action

In Scripture, love is not primarily a feeling but a commitment demonstrated through action. Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” Similarly, in John 14:21, He explains that those who have His commandments and keep them are the ones who love Him. The Apostolic writings continue this theme. Paul teaches in Romans 13:10 that “love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.”

Thus, love for God must be evidenced by doing what He commands, not simply saying we love Him or feeling affection toward Him. This standard of love is rooted in truth and righteousness, not emotionalism or cultural reinterpretation.

God’s Commandments Are Not Burdensome

John goes on to emphasize that “His commandments are not burdensome.” This is essential for understanding the practical Christian life. Jehovah is not an oppressive ruler who burdens His people with impossible standards. On the contrary, His commands are given for our good (Deuteronomy 10:13). They reflect His wisdom and love, guiding us away from sin and toward righteousness.

Psalm 19:7–11 describes God’s law as perfect, right, pure, and more desirable than gold. Far from being a heavy burden, obedience leads to life, peace, and spiritual clarity (Psalm 119:165). The one who walks according to God’s Word is not crushed under a load of legalism but empowered by truth. The Holy Spirit-inspired Scriptures equip the believer to do every good work (2 Timothy 3:16–17).

The Love of God in the Believer’s Life

The phrase “this is the love of God” in 1 John 5:3 can be understood in two ways: the believer’s love for God, and God’s love working in the believer. Both aspects are true. When we love God, we respond to His love by obeying Him (1 John 4:19). At the same time, it is His love and guidance that enables us to walk in obedience. God’s love empowers the believer to live a life that pleases Him, and this life is characterized by submission to His revealed will in Scripture.

It is important to emphasize that the commandments John refers to are not optional guidelines—they are imperatives grounded in divine authority. To claim love for God while living in willful disobedience is a contradiction. As 1 John 2:4 says, “The one who says, ‘I have come to know Him,’ and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.”

False Love Claims in Modern Christianity

Many modern teachings promote a view of Christianity where obedience is either downplayed or outright dismissed in favor of grace misunderstood. But grace never negates obedience. As Paul wrote in Romans 6:1–2, “Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase? Far from it! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?” The grace of God trains us to deny ungodliness and to live righteously (Titus 2:11–12).

False teachers and emotionalized religion claim that love is simply about sincerity or passion for God, without any concrete submission to His commands. Yet Scripture is not vague—obedience is the true test of love. Jesus clearly warned in Luke 6:46, “Why do you call Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”

Walking in Obedience as a Way of Life

For the believer, obedience is not a once-for-all decision but a lifelong walk. It is shown in daily decisions, attitudes, and actions. The true Christian will seek God’s will in His Word and conform their life to it, even when it is difficult. This is not a burden for the one who genuinely loves God—it is a joy, a privilege, and the path to spiritual maturity.

The commandments of God do not enslave; they liberate. Obedience frees the believer from the bondage of sin and aligns them with God’s purpose. Psalm 119:45 says, “And I will walk at liberty, for I seek Your precepts.” The Word of God, when obeyed, brings true freedom and deep assurance of salvation.
