Daily Devotional on John 16:2

“They will put you out of the synagogue. Yes, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.”John 16:2

Jesus prepared His disciples for the reality that following Him would bring severe opposition. He did not offer them false promises of ease, comfort, or popularity. Instead, He spoke plainly: rejection, persecution, and even death would come, often at the hands of religious authorities who believed they were serving God. The synagogue, once a place of worship and instruction, would cast them out, and zeal without truth would rise to violent hostility.

This verse exposes a sobering truth: persecution often comes cloaked in religious clothing. Those who opposed the disciples of Christ believed themselves to be righteous, but in reality, they were resisting the very will of Jehovah. Misguided zeal, divorced from Scripture, leads men to commit the gravest evils under the guise of serving God. Jesus warned His followers so they would not stumble, but would remain steadfast, knowing that persecution was not a sign of abandonment but of faithfulness.

For the believer today, John 16:2 remains a vital reminder. Faithfulness to Christ may cost us relationships, positions, or even our lives. The world may misjudge our devotion as dangerous, intolerant, or misguided. Some may even persecute Christians believing they act in the name of righteousness. But the disciple’s task is not to seek approval from men, nor to avoid hardship, but to remain loyal to Christ regardless of the cost.

Spiritual warfare often comes through the twisting of truth, where men in blindness think they do God’s will while opposing His Word. Our safeguard is the inspired Scriptures, which keep us anchored in truth, reminding us that fidelity to Christ will inevitably clash with a world—and even with religious systems—that reject Him. The call of this verse is to stand firm, knowing that Jehovah’s approval outweighs all human rejection.

When you face rejection, slander, or even hostility for your faith, remember that Christ foretold it. He did not call us to an easy path but to a faithful one. To be cast out for His name is to share in His sufferings. To be hated for the truth is to walk in His steps. And to endure with integrity is to bear witness that our hope is not in the approval of men, but in the eternal reward that Jehovah gives to all who remain faithful.
