“You alone are the Most High over all the earth.”—Psalm 83:18.
This question demands more than an emotional or sentimental answer. It is not about who has been most helpful or kind to you in this temporal life, nor who you love dearly in a human sense. The correct and only biblically faithful answer for every true Christian is Jehovah God. As Psalm 83:18 clearly states, “You alone are the Most High over all the earth.” This verse does not simply reflect a poetic expression but a concrete theological truth. Jehovah, the personal name of the Creator, is not one among many; He is singular in majesty, supreme in authority, and exclusive in His position as the Almighty.
Jehovah—The Most High and Sovereign
The Hebrew term translated as “Most High” is ʽElyon, denoting exaltation and absolute supremacy. This title occurs in pivotal contexts throughout Scripture to emphasize the absolute sovereignty of Jehovah over creation, human affairs, and even the spiritual realm. He is not merely “God” in the generic or philosophical sense; He is Jehovah—the One who is, who causes to become, who fulfills all that He declares. The use of His personal name alongside the title “Most High” underscores the exclusivity and intimacy of His relationship with His people and the absolute nature of His position.
When Psalm 83 was written, it was a national prayer for deliverance against a coalition of nations that sought to wipe out Israel. The psalmist, under inspiration, concluded with a prayer that these nations would come to know and acknowledge a central theological truth: “That people may know that you, whose name is Jehovah, You alone are the Most High over all the earth.” (Psalm 83:18, UASV) This was not merely about national survival—it was about universal recognition of Jehovah’s rightful supremacy. It is not enough for Jehovah to be one of many gods; He alone is to be exalted.

He Must Be First in Your Life
The importance of Jehovah is not abstract or distant. It reaches into every part of your daily life. To claim that Jehovah is the Most High yet live as if others hold greater importance is hypocrisy. Jehovah Himself has clearly declared through His inspired Word what He demands: exclusive devotion. As Jesus Christ stated: “You shall love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” (Matthew 22:37, UASV) This command leaves no room for partial allegiance.
Loving Jehovah above all else means He must occupy the central place in your priorities, affections, decisions, and life direction. It affects how you manage your time, whom you marry, what career you choose, and how you respond to difficulties. If any person, pursuit, or possession competes with Jehovah for the preeminent place in your life, then He is not truly your Most High.
This exclusive relationship is also rooted in gratitude. Jehovah created you (Genesis 1:27), sustains your existence (Acts 17:28), offers the only path to eternal life (John 17:3), and has provided redemption through His Son, Jesus Christ (Romans 5:8). No human being, no matter how loving or self-sacrificing, can offer what Jehovah offers or demand what Jehovah rightfully demands.

He Is the Source of All Life and Meaning
To understand why Jehovah must be the most important person in your life, consider that everything you have, everything you are, and everything you will ever hope for comes from Him. “With you is the source of life,” wrote the psalmist. “By your light we can see light.” (Psalm 36:9) This is not poetic flourish; it is theological fact. There is no life apart from Jehovah—no existence, no purpose, no hope.
Unlike fleeting human relationships, which are often marked by imperfection and ultimately end in death, the relationship with Jehovah is enduring and perfect. He does not change, betray, or disappoint. He is “a God of faithfulness, who is never unjust; righteous and upright is he.” (Deuteronomy 32:4) In a world of instability, pain, and uncertainty, Jehovah stands as the unshakeable rock.

The Relationship That Determines Your Destiny
The person who is most important in your life is the one who has the greatest influence on your future. In that light, no one comes close to Jehovah. Your eternal destiny is entirely determined by your standing with Him. Those who walk with Him, in faithful obedience and reverence, have the hope of everlasting life on a restored earth. (Revelation 21:3–4) Those who disregard Him face eternal destruction. (2 Thessalonians 1:8–9)
Choosing Jehovah as the Most Important Person in your life is not a matter of sentiment or religion—it is a matter of life and death. This is why the Scriptures are filled with urgent calls to “seek Jehovah while he may be found.” (Isaiah 55:6) Putting Him first is not an option—it is a divine imperative.

Jesus Christ’s Role in This Relationship
While Jehovah alone is the Most High, He has provided one Mediator between Himself and mankind—His Son, Jesus Christ. (1 Timothy 2:5) The faithful Christian does not elevate Jesus to a co-equal position with Jehovah, as is falsely done in Trinitarianism, but acknowledges the Son’s essential and exclusive role as the means through which we approach the Father.
Jesus himself taught this priority in John 17:3: “This means everlasting life, their coming to know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.” Jesus acknowledged His subordinate role and directed glory to the Father. For the Christian, Jesus is the way to Jehovah—not a substitute for Jehovah.
To claim Jehovah as the Most Important Person in your life, therefore, necessitates obedience to Jesus Christ, the appointed Lord and Messiah. But even in doing so, the ultimate devotion remains fixed on the Father. The Son’s role is to glorify the Father and reconcile humanity to Him. (John 14:6; 1 Corinthians 15:24–28)

Practical Proof That Jehovah Is Most Important
It is not sufficient to say Jehovah is most important; this truth must be verified in one’s conduct. True importance is shown in time allocation, emotional investment, decision-making, and obedience. The one you obey, serve, and honor most consistently reveals the true priority of your heart.
Does Jehovah receive the first and best of your time—in prayer, study of His Word, and ministry? Do His standards govern your entertainment, speech, and associations? Do you consult His Word before making decisions? Are you quick to repent when you sin against Him?
To many, their career, family, or even themselves are the most important persons in their lives. This is idolatry in practice. Even a well-meaning affection for a spouse, child, or friend can become misplaced devotion if it eclipses your loyalty to Jehovah. Jesus said, “He who loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:37) Since Jesus reflects the will of the Father, this statement underscores that love for Jehovah and His will must exceed all other loves.

Your Answer Has Eternal Consequences
Every human being, whether consciously or not, answers the question “Who is the most important person in your life?” by the way they live. Many claim to believe in God, but live as practical atheists. Others pay lip service to Jehovah but prioritize human relationships or personal ambitions. This is spiritual adultery.
The true Christian, guided by the inspired Scriptures, knows that Jehovah alone deserves the place of highest honor. This is not fanaticism; it is fidelity. It is the only appropriate response to the One who formed us, redeemed us, and offers us eternal life.
Therefore, ask yourself soberly: Do your choices, priorities, and actions declare Jehovah as the Most Important Person in your life? If not, the time to change is now. Devotion to Jehovah is not only right—it is wise. It is not only commanded—it is essential for life.
