Living as God’s Own in a World Under Satan’s Control: A Devotional on 1 John 5:19 for Faithful Christian Living

Knowing the Difference Between God’s Children and the World’s Darkness

“We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies in the power of the wicked one.” — 1 John 5:19, UASV

This bold and piercing declaration by the apostle John separates humanity into two distinct realities: those who are “of God” and those who are under the dominion of the “wicked one.” In this simple yet profound verse, John presents the spiritual state of the believer with certainty, while also unveiling the true condition of the world system. It is not morally neutral. It is not spiritually ambiguous. It is under the power of Satan.

Written around 98 C.E., near the end of the apostle John’s life, 1 John confronts rising apostasy, spiritual deception, and moral compromise. The early church was already facing false teachers, many of whom denied the humanity or deity of Christ (1 John 2:22; 4:2–3), downplayed obedience (1 John 2:4), and rejected brotherly love (1 John 3:10, 14). John’s goal in this letter is not to speculate, but to give believers assurance and clarity regarding the truth of their faith, the standard of righteous living, and the dangerous reality of a world dominated by the devil.

1 John 5:19 summarizes and contrasts these two identities with unmistakable directness. The believer is not to be confused about who he is or where he lives. The Christian belongs to God but lives in a world controlled by Satan. Understanding and applying this truth is essential for daily Christian living.

“We Know That We Are of God”: Assurance of Identity

John begins with a confident declaration: “We know.” This is the Greek verb oidamen, which denotes settled knowledge based on spiritual reality, not speculation or emotion. It reflects absolute certainty. Believers do not guess whether they belong to God—they know. This certainty is grounded in the new birth (1 John 5:1), belief in Jesus as the Christ (5:5), love for the brethren (3:14), and obedience to God’s commands (2:3–6).

“To be of God” (Greek: ek tou Theou) means to be born of God, to originate from God in a spiritual sense. This is not a vague religious identity or moral affiliation; it is a supernatural transformation. It is the state of those who have received eternal life through faith in Jesus Christ (John 3:3–5). They are not merely “in church” or “religious” — they are regenerated, adopted into God’s family (John 1:12–13), sealed by the Spirit (Ephesians 1:13), and separated from the world system (John 17:14–16).

This knowledge should govern every aspect of the Christian’s daily conduct. It means the believer does not belong to this world’s culture, values, or priorities. His identity is not found in politics, nationality, race, or profession—but in being a child of God. Every decision, every relationship, and every goal must reflect that divine origin. The Christian walks as a light in darkness (Matthew 5:14–16), bearing witness to the truth that salvation is real, transforming, and eternal.

“And the Whole World Lies in the Power of the Wicked One”: The Nature of the Present World

The contrast could not be more absolute. While the believer is “of God,” the “whole world” (Greek: ho kosmos holos) lies under the sway of Satan. The word kosmos refers not to the physical planet but to the organized system of human life, including its philosophies, cultures, governments, values, religions, and economic pursuits—all of which function independently of God and are hostile to Him.

The phrase “lies in the power of the wicked one” (Greek: en tō ponērō keitai) is both sobering and descriptive. The verb keitai (“lies”) is in the present indicative, signifying a continuous state. It paints the image of the world as reclining, passive, and fully settled in Satan’s dominion. It is not merely influenced by evil; it is governed by it. The “wicked one” (ho ponēros) is a title for Satan, used frequently by John and Jesus (John 17:15; Matthew 13:19).

This is not exaggeration. Satan is called “the god of this world” (2 Corinthians 4:4), “the prince of the power of the air” (Ephesians 2:2), and the one “who deceives the whole world” (Revelation 12:9). Though his final judgment is certain (Revelation 20:10), his current activity is extensive. He blinds minds to the gospel, promotes false doctrine, and energizes rebellion against God.

For the believer, this means recognizing that the world is not a neutral arena for personal advancement or entertainment. It is a spiritual battlefield. Its values are contrary to God’s truth, its ambitions are temporal and self-centered, and its moral compass is reversed (Isaiah 5:20). Christians must constantly be on guard, resisting conformity to this system (Romans 12:2), and fleeing its corruption (2 Peter 1:4).

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

Implications for Daily Christian Living

This verse establishes two simultaneous realities that govern Christian conduct. First, the believer has a secure identity in God. Second, he lives in a hostile, Satan-controlled environment. Recognizing both realities is essential to live faithfully and without compromise.

1. Spiritual Discernment and Separation
Believers must develop spiritual discernment. The world’s ideas about success, love, justice, and truth are frequently deceptive. The Christian must test all things by Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:21), not popular opinion or emotional appeal. “Friendship with the world is hostility toward God” (James 4:4). This requires a constant renewing of the mind through the Word of God and deliberate separation from worldly thinking.

2. Vigilance Against Temptation and Compromise
Satan seeks to devour (1 Peter 5:8). He works through deceit, false teachers, corrupt entertainment, ungodly relationships, and personal pride. The believer must put on the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10–17) and pray without ceasing. Compromise begins when believers forget that the world lies in Satan’s power. Entertainment choices, business ethics, personal ambitions—everything must be evaluated through the lens of God’s holiness.

3. Bold Witness and Endurance
The believer does not retreat from the world, but he does not blend into it either. He stands firm in the truth, exposing darkness through holy living (Ephesians 5:11), preaching the gospel, and enduring ridicule or persecution for Christ’s sake. Knowing that the world is under Satan should not lead to fear, but to boldness, for “greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world” (1 John 4:4).

4. Hope Amid Hostility
Living in a world under Satan’s influence can be disheartening. Corruption, deception, violence, and hatred abound. Yet the believer remains hopeful. Christ has overcome the world (John 16:33). His kingdom is not of this world (John 18:36), and the present world is passing away (1 John 2:17). The Christian sets his eyes on things above (Colossians 3:1–2), knowing that victory is already secured in Christ.

Avoiding Modern Deceptions

Many churches today soften the reality of Satan’s dominion over the world, opting instead for messages of self-improvement, worldly success, and emotional fulfillment. But such teaching betrays the biblical truth. The world is not a place to be affirmed—it is a place to be overcome.

Likewise, false gospels promise worldly prosperity, popularity, and ease—all of which contradict the example of Christ and the clear teaching of Scripture. Jesus warned, “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you” (John 15:18). Paul echoed this when he said, “Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted” (2 Timothy 3:12).

True Christianity does not seek to make peace with a world under Satan—it calls sinners out of it, into the marvelous light of Christ (1 Peter 2:9). It calls for holiness, courage, and uncompromising loyalty to the truth.

The Role of the Church

The church is not a social organization or a religious tradition—it is the pillar and support of the truth (1 Timothy 3:15). Its mission is not to accommodate the world but to proclaim the gospel and disciple believers to live faithfully in the midst of it. A church that forgets that the world lies in the power of the wicked one will eventually look like the world, talk like the world, and love what the world loves.

But a church that knows it is “of God” will live differently. It will pursue holiness, sound doctrine, mutual love, and evangelistic boldness. It will resist worldliness and persevere in the truth, no matter the cost.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

A Final Word for the Believer

1 John 5:19 is not meant to frighten but to clarify. The believer is not in darkness. He is of God. He belongs to the One who is sovereign, holy, and victorious. Yet he must not be naïve. The world is not safe, and its ruler is hostile. But Christ has already conquered, and those who are born of God “overcome the world” through faith in Him (1 John 5:4).

Live each day remembering who you are and where you are. You are of God—live like it. And you are in the world—fight faithfully within it, knowing that your victory is secure in Christ.
