How Does God’s Forgiveness Show His Goodness?
The goodness of Jehovah is one of the most powerful themes in Scripture. His goodness is not abstract or distant but is demonstrated in tangible ways, particularly in His willingness to forgive. Many people struggle to comprehend the depth of divine forgiveness, either because they feel too unworthy to receive it or because they misunderstand its conditions. However, the Bible repeatedly affirms that Jehovah’s goodness is inseparable from His mercy, and those who genuinely seek Him can find forgiveness.
One verse that beautifully expresses this truth is Psalm 86:5, which declares, “For you, Lord, are good and ready to forgive, abounding in faithful love to all who call on you.” This passage highlights not only Jehovah’s goodness but also His eagerness to forgive. Unlike human forgiveness, which is often reluctant and conditional, divine forgiveness flows from a heart of mercy. It is not granted begrudgingly but is extended freely to those who sincerely turn to Him.
The phrase “ready to forgive” in Psalm 86:5 emphasizes that Jehovah does not delay in showing mercy to the repentant. He is not distant or hesitant but stands willing to pardon those who seek Him. This aligns with Isaiah 55:7, which says, “Let the wicked one abandon his way and the sinful one his thoughts; let him return to Jehovah, so he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will freely forgive.” The goodness of Jehovah is demonstrated in His abundant willingness to restore those who humble themselves before Him.
The basis of divine forgiveness is found in Jehovah’s faithful love. Psalm 86:5 states that He is “abounding in faithful love to all who call on” Him. This love, often translated from the Hebrew word chesed (חֶסֶד), carries the idea of steadfast mercy and covenant loyalty. Jehovah’s forgiveness is not based on human worthiness but on His own unchanging character. Unlike human love, which can be fickle and conditional, Jehovah’s chesed is enduring and available to all who seek Him.
However, divine forgiveness is not automatic. The phrase “to all who call on you” indicates that Jehovah’s mercy is extended to those who actively seek Him. This aligns with 1 John 1:9, which states, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Forgiveness is not about repeating empty words but about a genuine turning to Jehovah in humility and repentance.
The goodness of Jehovah’s forgiveness is also evident in its completeness. Human forgiveness is often partial, remembering past wrongs even after reconciliation. But Jehovah’s forgiveness removes sin entirely. Psalm 103:12 declares, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.” The vastness of this removal signifies the totality of divine pardon. Unlike human relationships, where past offenses may still linger in memory, Jehovah’s forgiveness erases sin completely, restoring the individual to righteousness.
Jehovah’s forgiveness also demonstrates His patience. Many struggle with repeated sins, wondering if God will forgive them yet again. However, Lamentations 3:22-23 reassures, “Because of Jehovah’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!” While divine forgiveness is never an excuse to continue in sin, it is a reminder that Jehovah does not give up on those who sincerely seek Him. His patience is an extension of His goodness, giving individuals repeated opportunities to repent and return.
Jehovah’s goodness is further seen in His willingness to forgive even the most grievous sins. The apostle Paul, before his conversion, persecuted Christians and was complicit in their deaths. Yet, he received Jehovah’s mercy, later writing, “But I received mercy for this reason, so that in me, the worst of them, Christ Jesus might demonstrate his extraordinary patience as an example to those who would believe in him for eternal life” (1 Timothy 1:16). Paul’s transformation shows that no sin is beyond Jehovah’s ability to forgive when genuine repentance is present.
The ultimate expression of Jehovah’s goodness in forgiveness is found in the gospel message itself. Jesus’ sacrifice was the means by which divine forgiveness was made available. Ephesians 1:7 states, “In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.” Jehovah’s goodness is not just a passive quality; it actively seeks to redeem and restore. This is why Scripture repeatedly calls people to repentance, urging them to turn to Jehovah for the forgiveness that He is eager to give.
Psalm 86:5 is a reminder that divine forgiveness is not limited by human frailty. Jehovah’s goodness ensures that all who sincerely call upon Him can receive mercy. His forgiveness is ready, abundant, and complete, reflecting His steadfast love. The question is never whether Jehovah is willing to forgive, but whether we are willing to seek Him. For those who do, His goodness will be seen in the richness of His mercy, restoring them to a relationship with Him.
