How Can We Faithfully Pass On the Truth of God’s Word?
The Responsibility of Teaching Others
One of the greatest responsibilities given to faithful believers is the duty to pass on the truth of God’s Word to others. This is not merely a suggestion but a command, as seen in 2 Timothy 2:2, where Paul instructs Timothy, “and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.” This verse highlights the essential role of discipleship, showing that the transmission of truth is not meant to stop with one person but is to continue from generation to generation. The gospel is not a private possession but a sacred trust that must be preserved and taught accurately.
Paul’s words reflect the biblical pattern of teaching that has been present throughout Scripture. In Deuteronomy 6:6-7, Jehovah commanded Israel, “And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.” The responsibility of instructing others in the truth of God’s Word is not optional; it is a duty that requires diligence and consistency. Just as Israel was required to ensure that future generations knew Jehovah’s commandments, Christians are called to continue this legacy by training others in the faith.
Faithful Transmission of Truth
The phrase “entrust to faithful men” in 2 Timothy 2:2 emphasizes that the truth of God’s Word must be carefully safeguarded and passed on to those who will handle it responsibly. This is not about simply passing on knowledge to anyone willing to listen, but rather about ensuring that the message is given to those who will remain faithful to it. Jesus demonstrated this principle in his ministry when he chose his apostles carefully, training them over time so they would be equipped to carry on the work after his departure. Luke 6:40 states, “A disciple is not above his teacher, but everyone when he is fully trained will be like his teacher.”
Paul himself was an example of this process. He received the truth from Jesus Christ (Galatians 1:11-12), passed it on to Timothy, and expected Timothy to pass it on to others. This demonstrates a biblical chain of discipleship, where one generation of faithful believers prepares the next to continue the work. This method ensures that the gospel does not become corrupted by human opinions, traditions, or distortions but remains pure and unchanged.
However, not all will remain faithful to the truth. Paul warns Timothy in 2 Timothy 4:3-4, “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears, they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” This warning underscores why it is necessary to entrust God’s Word to reliable individuals who will uphold its integrity rather than distort it to please human desires.
The Importance of Teaching with Accuracy
Faithfully passing on the truth requires a commitment to teaching with accuracy. Paul later instructs Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:15, “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.” This verse emphasizes that teaching must be done with care and precision, ensuring that Scripture is interpreted correctly. Those who are careless or who twist the message for personal gain will face judgment, as seen in James 3:1, “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.”
One of the greatest threats to the transmission of truth is the introduction of false doctrine. Paul warns in Galatians 1:8, “But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.” The responsibility of teaching is not simply about sharing opinions or personal interpretations; it is about faithfully conveying the unchanging truth of Jehovah. Deviation from this truth leads to destruction, as was the case with many in the early church who turned away from sound doctrine.
Living Out the Truth
The process of passing on God’s Word is not merely about verbal instruction but about demonstrating truth through daily living. Paul not only taught Timothy the Scriptures but also modeled faithfulness through his actions. In 1 Corinthians 11:1, Paul states, “Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” Teaching is not simply about words; it is about showing others how to live in obedience to Jehovah.
Jesus himself embodied this principle. In John 13:15, after washing the disciples’ feet, he declared, “For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you.” True discipleship involves both instruction and example, guiding others not only in knowledge but in righteous living. This aligns with 1 John 2:6, which states, “Whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.”
The Reward for Faithful Teaching
Those who faithfully pass on the truth of Jehovah’s Word will receive a great reward. Daniel 12:3 states, “And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.” Teaching others is not only a responsibility but a privilege, as it leads to eternal rewards in Jehovah’s kingdom.
Jesus affirmed this in Matthew 28:19-20, commanding, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” This commission makes it clear that believers must actively teach and disciple others, ensuring that the truth continues to spread.
Paul, nearing the end of his life, expressed confidence in his faithfulness to this calling. In 2 Timothy 4:7-8, he stated, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day.” Faithfulness in teaching is not about seeking earthly recognition but about securing eternal rewards from Jehovah.
Conclusion
Passing on the truth of God’s Word is a sacred duty that requires faithfulness, diligence, and accuracy. Paul’s instruction to Timothy in 2 Timothy 2:2 underscores the necessity of training reliable individuals who will continue spreading the gospel without compromise. In a world where false teachings abound, the responsibility to uphold sound doctrine has never been more crucial. This requires careful study, unwavering obedience, and a commitment to living out the truth daily. Those who remain faithful in this task will not only preserve Jehovah’s Word for future generations but will also receive an eternal reward. As Jesus declared in Matthew 24:13, “But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
