How Can We Remain Faithful in a World Under the Power of the Evil One?
In 1 John 5:19, the Apostle John declares a sobering truth: “We know that we are of God, and that the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” This verse offers a stark contrast between those who belong to God and the state of the world under the influence of Satan. It provides insight into the spiritual battle that defines the Christian life and reminds believers of their identity in Christ. The statement is not a vague generalization but a definitive declaration that the world is not neutral territory—it is dominated by the evil one. Understanding the implications of this verse is crucial for remaining faithful to God despite the opposition and temptations that surround us.
John begins with the assurance, “We know that we are of God.” This certainty is foundational for believers. It is not a speculative statement but a confident affirmation of our standing before God. The phrase “we are of God” signifies belonging, identity, and spiritual rebirth. This echoes earlier statements in John’s writings, such as 1 John 3:1, which says, “See how great a love the Father has given us, that we would be called children of God; and in fact we are.” The Christian’s identity is not defined by the world’s standards but by God’s declaration. To be “of God” means to be set apart, to have a new nature, and to live under His rule rather than under the dominion of sin.
However, the second half of the verse presents a sobering contrast: “the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.” The word “lies” (Greek: κεῖται, keitai) implies a passive state of subjugation. The world is not merely influenced by Satan—it is under his power, resting in his grip. This echoes Jesus’ words in John 12:31, where He refers to Satan as “the ruler of this world.” Paul also emphasizes this reality in 2 Corinthians 4:4, calling Satan “the god of this world who has blinded the minds of the unbelieving.” The world system, with its values, priorities, and ideologies, operates under the deception of Satan, leading people away from the truth of God.
This does not mean that Satan has ultimate authority over creation—God alone is sovereign. However, within God’s permissive will, Satan exerts significant influence over the present world order. His power is evident in the rampant sin, false teachings, moral decay, and hostility toward God’s truth. This is why Jesus said in John 15:19, “If you were of the world, the world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.” There is an inherent opposition between those who belong to God and the world that lies in Satan’s power.
Because the world is under the power of the evil one, Christians must remain vigilant. The pressures to conform to worldly thinking are constant. The Apostle Paul warns in Romans 12:2, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The danger is not only in outright rebellion against God but also in subtle compromises that gradually align believers with the world’s ways. The influence of the evil one manifests in the normalization of sin, the distortion of truth, and the persecution of those who stand for righteousness.
Despite this reality, believers are not without hope. While the world lies in Satan’s power, we are “of God,” which means we have been delivered from the domain of darkness. Colossians 1:13 states, “For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son.” This transfer is not merely theoretical—it is a spiritual reality that changes everything about how we live. Though we still reside in the world, we no longer belong to it. Jesus prayed in John 17:15-16, “I am not asking You to take them out of the world, but to keep them away from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.” Our calling is to live in the world while resisting its corrupting influences.
Because the world lies in the power of the evil one, we must also be aware of spiritual deception. False teachings abound, designed to lead people away from the truth of God’s Word. John warns earlier in 1 John 4:1, “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” The influence of the evil one is not only seen in blatant sin but also in counterfeit gospels that distort biblical truth. This is why it is essential to remain grounded in Scripture, discerning what is from God and what is from the world.
The good news is that Satan’s rule over this world is temporary. His defeat was sealed at the cross, where Jesus triumphed over sin and death. Hebrews 2:14-15 states, “Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, so that through death He might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and free those who through fear of death were subject to slavery all their lives.” Though Satan still has influence, his power is limited and his final judgment is certain. Revelation 20:10 describes his ultimate fate: “And the devil who deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are also; and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
Until that time, we are called to stand firm. Ephesians 6:10-11 exhorts believers, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” We are not left defenseless in this spiritual battle. God has provided us with His Word, His Spirit-inspired guidance, and the support of the church to help us resist the enemy’s influence.
1 John 5:19 serves as a powerful reminder that we must not be lulled into complacency. The world is not a neutral environment—it is under the power of the evil one. However, we do not belong to this world. Our identity is in God, and our victory is in Christ. As we navigate a world filled with deception and opposition, we must remain steadfast in our faith, anchored in the truth of God’s Word, and committed to living as children of God in a world that desperately needs the light of the gospel.
