The question of when Armageddon will occur has long intrigued and puzzled believers throughout Christian history. However, Scripture makes it clear that setting a precise date for Armageddon is not only impossible but also contrary to biblical teaching. While the Bible provides clear and literal chronology for many historical events, it deliberately withholds any exact timing for future eschatological events like Armageddon. Christians who have attempted to predict the end of the world, such as William Miller and various leaders within the Jehovah’s Witnesses, have only proven that date-setting is futile. The Bible does not allow for such precision, and multiple passages warn against trying to determine the exact time of the end.

What Does the Bible Say About Knowing the Time of Armageddon?

One of the foundational principles in understanding why setting a date for Armageddon is impossible lies in the explicit statements made by Jesus and the apostles regarding the unknowability of the exact timing of end-time events. Jesus, in Matthew 24:36, clearly states: “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” This passage firmly places the knowledge of the timing of Armageddon within the exclusive domain of God. Jesus himself—while on earth—confessed that even he did not know the exact time of these future events. The angels, powerful heavenly beings, are also excluded from knowing this information.

The phrase “no one knows” is significant because it shuts the door to human attempts to calculate or predict when Armageddon will occur. If Jesus, during his earthly ministry, did not know the timing, how could any human today possibly possess that knowledge? The message is clear: attempting to set a date for Armageddon is not only presumptuous but directly contradicts the words of Christ.

In Acts 1:6-7, after his resurrection, the apostles asked Jesus, “Lord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?” Jesus responded, “It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.” Once again, the knowledge of eschatological events is reserved for God alone. The disciples were eager to know when the kingdom would be fully established, but Jesus made it clear that such information was not meant for them—or for anyone. The Father, in his infinite wisdom, keeps the timing of these events secret.

Explaining the Doctrine of the Last Things

Armageddon as Part of God’s Hidden Plan

The concept of Armageddon and the end times is deeply tied to the broader theme in Scripture of God’s sovereign plan, which unfolds according to His will and timing. Throughout the Bible, there is a recurring emphasis on the hidden nature of God’s plans for the future. In Deuteronomy 29:29, Moses declared, “The secret things belong to Jehovah our God, but the things revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may follow all the words of this law.” This verse highlights a fundamental distinction between what God has revealed to humanity and what He has chosen to keep hidden. Armageddon, as part of God’s future judgment, falls into the category of “secret things” that belong to God alone.

While the Bible provides ample guidance on how Christians should live in anticipation of Christ’s return, it does not provide a roadmap for determining the exact timing of that return or of the final battle of Armageddon. The Scriptures are filled with exhortations to be watchful, faithful, and prepared, but they do not give believers a timeline. The unpredictability of the timing is part of God’s design, ensuring that every generation of Christians remains vigilant and devoted, rather than complacent or overly fixated on specific dates.

In 2 Peter 3:10, the apostle Peter warns, “But the day of the Lord will come like a thief.” The metaphor of a thief emphasizes the sudden and unexpected nature of the Lord’s return, underscoring that it will not be preceded by a predictable series of events that could allow for a precise calculation. The concept of Jesus’ return being “like a thief” is repeated in other passages, including 1 Thessalonians 5:2 and Revelation 16:15, further reinforcing the idea that the timing of these events will take the world by surprise.

Historical Examples of Failed Predictions

Despite the clear biblical warnings against setting dates for Christ’s return and the end times, there have been numerous instances throughout Christian history where individuals or groups have attempted to predict the timing of Armageddon or the Second Coming. These efforts have consistently failed, often leading to disappointment and disillusionment among their followers.

One of the most famous examples of failed eschatological predictions comes from William Miller, the founder of the Millerite movement. Miller, a Baptist preacher in the 19th century, believed that Christ would return in 1844. He based his prediction on a complex interpretation of the prophecies in Daniel and Revelation. Miller’s followers, known as Millerites, eagerly anticipated the event, which they referred to as the “Great Disappointment” when it did not come to pass. Despite Miller’s sincerity and the fervor of his followers, their attempt to set a date for the return of Christ was ultimately misguided and proved to be a significant error. This disappointment would eventually contribute to the development of the Seventh-day Adventist movement, but Miller’s failed predictions serve as a stark reminder of the dangers of date-setting.

The Jehovah’s Witnesses offer another notable example of failed eschatological predictions. The organization, which emerged in the late 19th century, has a long history of attempting to set dates for Armageddon. One of the most well-known predictions was for the year 1914. Charles Taze Russell, the founder of the movement, believed that Armageddon would begin in that year, marking the end of the current world system. While World War I did break out in 1914, it did not lead to the apocalyptic events that the Watchtower Society had predicted. Despite this, the organization continued to set further dates, including 1925 and 1975, for the end of the world.

The prediction of 1975, in particular, had a significant impact on the Jehovah’s Witnesses. Leading up to that year, the Watchtower Society encouraged its followers to believe that Armageddon would occur in 1975, leading many Witnesses to make drastic decisions, such as selling their homes and quitting their jobs, in preparation for the end. When 1975 passed without incident, the organization faced a crisis of faith among many of its members. The failure of this prediction was particularly damaging because it had been heavily promoted by the organization’s leadership. Since then, the Jehovah’s Witnesses have refrained from setting specific dates, likely as a result of the backlash they faced after the failure of the 1975 prediction.

These historical examples illustrate the futility of attempting to set a date for Armageddon or the return of Christ. Each attempt has failed, often causing harm to the believers who placed their trust in these predictions. Such efforts are ultimately based on a misunderstanding of biblical eschatology and a failure to heed the warnings of Scripture.

Living in Expectation Without Date-Setting

While it is impossible to set a date for Armageddon, the Bible does provide guidance on how Christians should live in anticipation of the end times. Rather than encouraging believers to focus on trying to predict the exact timing of Christ’s return, the New Testament emphasizes the importance of living in a state of constant readiness. In Matthew 24:42-44, Jesus says, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.”

This passage highlights the necessity of spiritual vigilance. Christians are called to be alert and ready at all times, recognizing that the return of Christ could happen at any moment. However, this readiness is not tied to knowing a specific date but rather to living faithfully in accordance with God’s Word.

The parable of the ten virgins in Matthew 25:1-13 further illustrates this point. In the parable, ten virgins are waiting for the arrival of the bridegroom, but only five of them are prepared with enough oil for their lamps. When the bridegroom arrives unexpectedly, the five foolish virgins are left unprepared and miss out on the wedding feast. Jesus concludes the parable by saying, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” This parable emphasizes the importance of being spiritually prepared at all times, rather than trying to calculate when the bridegroom (Christ) will return.

The Futility of Date-Setting and the Sovereignty of God

At its core, the desire to set a date for Armageddon reflects a misunderstanding of God’s sovereignty and the nature of biblical prophecy. The Bible teaches that God is in control of history and that His plans will unfold according to His perfect timing. In Isaiah 46:9-10, Jehovah declares, “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me. I make known the end from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say, ‘My purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please.’” This passage reminds believers that God alone determines the course of history, and His plans cannot be altered or predicted by human beings.

Attempts to set a date for Armageddon also misunderstand the purpose of biblical prophecy. The primary function of prophecy is not to provide believers with a detailed timeline of future events, but to call people to repentance, faithfulness, and trust in God’s promises. Prophecies about the end times are meant to encourage believers to remain steadfast in their faith, knowing that God’s ultimate victory is assured. In Revelation 19:11-16, we see a vivid description of Christ’s triumph at the final battle, where he is depicted as the rider on the white horse who will judge and make war with justice. This victory is certain, but the timing is unknown and unknowable.

The apostle Paul provides further insight into how Christians should view the future in Philippians 3:20-21: “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.” This passage encourages believers to focus not on trying to predict when Christ will return, but on living as citizens of heaven, eagerly awaiting the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Conclusion of Biblical Teaching on Armageddon

The Bible consistently teaches that the timing of Armageddon is unknown and unknowable. Attempts to set dates for the end of the world, whether by William Miller, the Jehovah’s Witnesses, or others, have always ended in failure. Jesus’ own words, as well as the writings of the apostles, make it clear that the exact timing of the end is reserved for God alone. Christians are called to live in a state of readiness, not by trying to calculate the date of Armageddon, but by faithfully following God’s Word and trusting in His sovereign plan.
