The Reality of God’s Existence
Trusting in a God who is real begins with acknowledging the existence of Jehovah, the Creator of the universe. The Bible provides compelling evidence of God’s existence and His active role in the world. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This opening verse of the Bible asserts that Jehovah is the Creator of all things. The intricacies of creation, from the vastness of the cosmos to the complexity of living organisms, reflect a purposeful design that points to a divine Designer.
God’s Revelation in Scripture
Jehovah has revealed Himself through the Scriptures. The Bible is not merely a historical document but the inspired Word of God. “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Bible’s consistent message, despite being written over centuries by different authors, underscores its divine origin. The historical accuracy and fulfilled prophecies within the Bible further validate its authenticity.
God’s Attributes
Understanding the nature of God enhances our trust in Him. The Bible describes Jehovah as omnipotent, omniscient, and omnipresent. “Great is our Lord and abundant in strength; His understanding is infinite” (Psalm 147:5). God’s power and knowledge surpass human comprehension. His eternal nature means He is unchanging and reliable. “For I, Jehovah, do not change” (Malachi 3:6). This constancy assures believers that God’s promises are steadfast.
God’s Love and Justice
Jehovah’s love and justice are foundational to His character. “God is love” (1 John 4:8). His love is evident in His creation, provision, and, most profoundly, in the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, for humanity’s redemption. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Alongside His love, God’s justice ensures that righteousness prevails. “For Jehovah is righteous, He loves righteousness; the upright will behold His face” (Psalm 11:7).
Personal Relationship with God
Trust in a real God is deepened through a personal relationship with Him. This relationship is made possible through Jesus Christ. “Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me'” (John 14:6). Through faith in Christ, believers are reconciled with God and can approach Him with confidence. “Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).
Experiencing God’s Presence
Believers experience God’s presence in their lives through the Holy Spirit and the Scriptures. The Holy Spirit guides, convicts, and comforts. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you” (John 14:26). The Scriptures provide wisdom and direction for living a life pleasing to God. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).
Evidence of God in Creation
The natural world offers abundant evidence of God’s existence and attributes. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20). The complexity of biological systems, the fine-tuning of the universe, and the beauty of nature all point to a Creator who is both powerful and purposeful.
Fulfilled Prophecy
The fulfillment of biblical prophecy is a strong testament to God’s sovereignty and the reliability of His Word. The prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah, the rise and fall of empires, and the restoration of Israel have been fulfilled with remarkable accuracy. “I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done” (Isaiah 46:9-10).
God’s Faithfulness in History
Throughout history, Jehovah has demonstrated His faithfulness to His people. The deliverance of Israel from Egypt, the preservation of the Jewish people, and the spread of the gospel through the early church all highlight God’s unwavering commitment to His promises. “Know therefore that Jehovah your God, He is God, the faithful God, who keeps His covenant and His lovingkindness to a thousandth generation with those who love Him and keep His commandments” (Deuteronomy 7:9).
Trusting God in Trials
Trust in God is often tested during trials and suffering. The Bible assures us that Jehovah is present even in our darkest moments. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). Trials can strengthen our faith and character, drawing us closer to God. “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance” (James 1:2-3).
Prayer and Dependence on God
Prayer is a vital expression of trust in Jehovah. Through prayer, believers communicate their needs, concerns, and gratitude to God. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6). Dependence on God through prayer acknowledges His sovereignty and our reliance on His provision.
God’s Provision and Care
Jehovah’s provision and care for His creation are evident throughout Scripture. He provides for our physical needs and spiritual nourishment. “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). Jesus taught His followers to trust in God’s provision, using the example of how He cares for the birds and flowers. “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?” (Matthew 6:26).
The Assurance of Salvation
Trusting in a real God includes the assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ. Believers are promised eternal life and security in their relationship with God. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:27-28). This assurance is based on the finished work of Christ on the cross and His resurrection, which guarantees victory over sin and death if one remains faithful until the end. (Matt 24:13) There is no Calvinistic Eternal Security.
Jude 5, RSV: “I desire to remind you, though you were once for all fully informed, that he who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.”
Matt. 24:13, RSV: “He who endures to the end will be saved.”
Phil. 2:12, RSV: “As you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” (This was addressed to “the saints,” or holy ones, at Philippi, as stated in Philippians 1:1. Paul urged them not to be overly confident but to realize that their final salvation was not yet assured.)
Heb. 10:26, 27, RSV: “If we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries.”
Living Out Our Faith
Trusting in Jehovah is not merely an intellectual assent but is demonstrated through a life of obedience and service. “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (James 1:22). Faith is expressed in our actions, attitudes, and relationships. As we live out our faith, we become witnesses to others of the reality of God’s presence and power in our lives.
The Hope of Eternal Life
The hope of eternal life is a cornerstone of Christian faith. Trusting in Jehovah means believing in the promise of a future resurrection and eternal fellowship with God. “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). This hope provides comfort and motivation to persevere in faithfulness despite the challenges of this life.
The Community of Believers
Trust in Jehovah is fostered and strengthened within the community of believers. The church provides support, encouragement, and accountability. “And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another” (Hebrews 10:24-25). Fellowship with other Christians helps us grow in our faith and remain steadfast in our trust in God.
God’s Sovereignty and Human Free Will
Trusting in a real God involves understanding the balance between God’s sovereignty and human free will. While Jehovah is sovereign and orchestrates His purposes, He has also granted humans the ability to make choices. “The mind of man plans his way, but Jehovah directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). This dynamic allows for genuine relationships and moral responsibility, highlighting God’s wisdom in His design of creation.
The Role of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in the believer’s trust in Jehovah. The Holy Spirit convicts, guides, empowers, and comforts. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you” (John 14:26). Through the Holy Spirit, believers experience God’s presence and receive the strength to live out their faith.
The Importance of Scripture
The Scriptures are foundational for building trust in Jehovah. The Bible provides the knowledge of God’s character, His promises, and His instructions for righteous living. “All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). Regular study and meditation on the Word of God deepen our understanding and strengthen our trust in Him.
Trust in God Amidst a Skeptical World
Living in a world that often denies or doubts the existence of God challenges believers to stand firm in their faith. The Bible forewarns of skepticism and encourages steadfastness. “But know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming?'” (2 Peter 3:3-4). Believers are called to be witnesses of God’s reality through their lives and testimony.
The Transformative Power of Faith
Trusting in Jehovah transforms lives. Faith in God leads to a renewed mind, a changed heart, and a life that reflects His glory. “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:1-2). This transformation is evidence of the reality of God’s work in the believer.
Conclusion
Trusting in a God who is real is foundational to the Christian faith. Jehovah’s existence is affirmed through creation, Scripture, and personal experience. His attributes of power, wisdom, love, and justice inspire confidence and reverence. A personal relationship with God through Jesus Christ, guided by the Holy Spirit and grounded in Scripture, empowers believers to live faithfully in a skeptical world. The transformative power of faith and the hope of eternal life provide the ultimate assurance that trusting in Jehovah is not only rational but also deeply rewarding.
