Trusting God in Trials

Trust in God is often tested during trials and suffering. The Bible assures us that Jehovah is present even in our darkest moments. “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). Trials can strengthen our faith and character, drawing us closer to God. “Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance” (James 1:2-3).

Prayer and Dependence on God

Prayer is a vital expression of trust in Jehovah. Through prayer, believers communicate their needs, concerns, and gratitude to God. “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God” (Philippians 4:6). Jehovah’s provision and care for His creation are evident throughout Scripture. He provides for our physical needs and spiritual nourishment. “And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). Jesus taught His followers to trust in God’s provision, using the example of how He cares for the birds and flowers. “Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they?” (Matthew 6:26).

The Assurance of Salvation

Trusting in a real God includes the assurance of salvation through Jesus Christ. Believers are promised eternal life and security in their relationship with God. “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand” (John 10:27-28). This assurance is based on the finished work of Christ on the cross and His resurrection, which guarantees victory over sin and death if one remains faithful until the end. (Matt 24:13) There is no Calvinistic Eternal Security.

Jude 5, RSV: “I desire to remind you, though you were once for all fully informed, that he who saved a people out of the land of Egypt, afterward destroyed those who did not believe.”

Matt. 24:13, RSV: “He who endures to the end will be saved.” 

Phil. 2:12, RSV: “As you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.” (This was addressed to “the saints,” or holy ones, at Philippi, as stated in Philippians 1:1. Paul urged them not to be overly confident but to realize that their final salvation was not yet assured.)

Heb. 10:26, 27, RSV: “If we sin deliberately after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a fearful prospect of judgment, and a fury of fire which will consume the adversaries.” 

Living Out Our Faith

Trusting in Jehovah is not merely an intellectual assent but is demonstrated through a life of obedience and service. “But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves” (James 1:22). Faith is expressed in our actions, attitudes, and relationships. As we live out our faith, we become witnesses to others of the reality of God’s presence and power in our lives.

The Hope of Eternal Life

The hope of eternal life is a cornerstone of Christian faith. Trusting in Jehovah means believing in the promise of a future resurrection and eternal fellowship with God. “For our citizenship is in heaven, from which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ” (Philippians 3:20). This hope provides comfort and motivation to persevere in faithfulness despite the challenges of this life.

The Community of Believers

Trust in Jehovah is fostered and strengthened within the community of believers. The church provides support, encouragement, and accountability. “And let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another” (Hebrews 10:24-25). Fellowship with other Christians helps us grow in our faith and remain steadfast in our trust in God.

God’s Sovereignty and Human Free Will

Trusting in a real God involves understanding the balance between God’s sovereignty and human free will. While Jehovah is sovereign and orchestrates His purposes, He has also granted humans the ability to make choices. “The mind of man plans his way, but Jehovah directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9). The Role of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in the believer’s trust in Jehovah.
