Religions Tested by Their Impact
Religions, much like systems of philosophy or machinery, must be evaluated based on their outcomes. A philosophy that fosters division and degrades humanity is deemed flawed. Similarly, a piece of machinery is judged by its efficiency and effectiveness. The best religion, then, is the one that produces the highest, purest, and most upright type of civilized man. At the advent of Christianity, the world was predominantly pagan, with Israel being a small remnant. These pagan religions, long-established and well-tested, failed to meet humanity’s spiritual needs.
Imperfections of Pagan Religions
Pagan systems were rife with defects, particularly in their conceptions of God. Socrates, one of the wisest pagans, believed in multiple gods. Typically, the gods of even the most advanced Gentile nations possessed corrupt and base passions and often demanded human sacrifices. No pagan religion ever fully satisfied the spiritual hunger of humanity. Whether Egyptian, Assyrian, Persian, Chinese, or Indian, their views of God and worship practices were confused and unworthy of enlightened reason. The Persians, for instance, worshiped the sun or light as the bringer of day and life, yet also revered the moon. This dualism divided the universe between two antagonistic deities.
The Bible’s Unique Revelation
In stark contrast, the Bible offers a coherent and morally superior understanding of God. The biblical portrayal of God is infinitely wise, just, holy, and entirely opposed to evil, as seen in Exodus 34:7, “keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty.” This depiction aligns with humanity’s highest conception of the divine and has never been successfully challenged by informed critics. Jesus Christ, the embodiment of God’s true nature, demonstrated God’s character perfectly during His earthly ministry.
Christianity’s Revolutionary Teachings
Christianity introduced revolutionary concepts such as the Fatherhood of God and the universal brotherhood of man, concepts unheard of and unacceptable to the prevailing Jewish and pagan beliefs. Jesus’ message was not confined to a single nation but aimed at saving the entire world, transforming ancient Judaism from a tribal creed into a global religion.
Christianity and Moral Purity
Christianity is unique in its moral purity and breadth. It encompasses every virtue and moral precept found in other religions while being free from their defects. Its morality is pure, intelligible, and accessible to all, appealing to both reason and conscious knowledge. Unlike other religions, which often involve complex and incomprehensible theories intelligible only to philosophers and priests, Christianity is understandable and applicable to everyone. It acknowledges all humans as guilty before God, as stated in Romans 3:23, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” and includes all in its redemptive plan.
Historical Evidence of Jesus Christ
The historical evidence for Jesus Christ is robust, with His existence corroborated by various sources outside the Bible, such as Tacitus and Josephus. His life, death, and resurrection are well-documented events that fulfill Old Testament prophecies. The transformative impact of His ministry is evident in the rapid spread of Christianity despite severe persecution.
Christianity’s Adaptability and Influence
Christianity’s adaptability is another testament to its divine origin. It has successfully met the spiritual needs of diverse cultures and societies, from the Eskimos to the South Sea Islanders. Its teachings have led to the development of true civilizations characterized by respect for human rights, moral integrity, and social justice. Unlike other religions that often failed to produce a noble civilization, Christianity has shaped the moral and social fabric of societies worldwide.
Modern Archaeological Corroboration
Modern archaeology continues to support the historical accuracy of the Bible. Discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls confirm the reliability of the biblical texts. Excavations in ancient cities have unearthed artifacts and inscriptions that align with biblical accounts, further validating the Scriptures’ historical credibility.
Christianity’s Unique Claims and Miracles
Christianity claims divine origin and appeals to miracles as proof. Unlike other religions, which lack credible miracle claims, Christianity’s miracles are well-documented and witnessed by contemporaries. The early Christians’ willingness to endure persecution and even death for their faith is a powerful testament to their belief in the reality of these miracles.
Conclusion
Christianity’s superiority over other religions and its intrinsic worth are evident in its moral teachings, historical accuracy, and transformative impact on individuals and societies. Its doctrines align with the facts of human history and experience, providing compelling evidence of its divine origin. The ongoing discoveries of archaeology and the enduring influence of Christianity continue to affirm its truth and reliability, offering a solid foundation for faith and life.
