The Character of the God of the Bible
The existence of God, as depicted in the Bible, is assumed, and the task of proof is left to theologians. The God revealed in the Old and New Testaments is unique in character, infinitely wise, just, holy, and utterly abhorrent of evil, as seen in passages like Exodus 34:7: “keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will by no means clear the guilty.” This portrayal aligns with humanity’s highest conception of the divine. No well-informed critic has faulted the Scriptures on the grounds of the character of its God. Jesus Christ, the God-man, manifested God’s true nature in His earthly life, providing a clear revelation of God as described in the Bible. Jesus referred to Moses and the prophets as witnesses to His divinity and presented His life as evidence that He met all the criteria set forth in the Scriptures regarding the Holy One.
The Fall of Man
The Bible begins with the story of creation and the fall of man, presenting the Eden narrative and the subsequent wickedness of early humanity. Genesis 6:5-6 describes this: “Jehovah saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And Jehovah repented that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart.” The biblical writers consistently record mankind’s depravity without any attempt to excuse it. The universality of sin is emphasized throughout the Scriptures, culminating in the New Testament’s declaration in Romans 3:23: “for all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.”
The History of Man Confirms the Bible’s Account of His Character
Human history provides ample evidence to confirm the biblical account of man’s character. The historical records of various nations and cultures reveal patterns of moral failure, violence, and corruption that align with the Bible’s depiction of humanity’s fallen nature. Archaeological discoveries consistently corroborate the biblical narrative, demonstrating that the biblical writers accurately described the moral and social conditions of their times.
The Promises of Redemption
Despite mankind’s fallen state, the Bible consistently offers a message of redemption. The promise of a Savior is a central theme throughout both the Old and New Testaments. Isaiah 53:5-6 prophesies the suffering servant who would bear the sins of many: “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and Jehovah hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.”
The Historical Evidence of Jesus Christ
The historical evidence for Jesus Christ is abundant and well-documented. His existence is corroborated by various historical sources outside the Bible, such as the writings of Tacitus and Josephus. Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection are pivotal events that fulfill Old Testament prophecies and form the foundation of Christian faith. His teachings and miracles were witnessed by many, and the transformative impact of His ministry is evident in the rapid growth of the early Christian church.
The Spread of Christianity
Christianity’s spread, despite severe persecution, is a testament to its divine origin. The apostles and early Christians were willing to endure extreme hardships and even death to proclaim the gospel. This unwavering commitment is a powerful evidence of their belief in the truth of Jesus’ resurrection and the divine nature of His message. The rapid expansion of Christianity across diverse cultures and regions, often in the face of strong opposition, underscores its divine backing and the authenticity of its teachings.
The Consistency of Biblical Doctrine
The doctrines and teachings of the Bible are consistent with historical facts and human experience. The Bible’s moral teachings have profoundly influenced Western civilization, shaping its laws, ethics, and cultural values. The principles of justice, mercy, and love espoused in the Scriptures have contributed to the development of humanitarian efforts, social reforms, and the advancement of human rights.
Modern Archaeological Corroboration
Modern archaeology continues to provide evidence supporting the historical accuracy of the Bible. Discoveries such as the Dead Sea Scrolls have confirmed the reliability of the biblical texts, showing that they have been faithfully preserved over millennia. Excavations in the ancient cities of Israel and surrounding regions have unearthed artifacts and inscriptions that align with biblical accounts, further validating the Scriptures’ historical credibility.
Conclusion
The doctrines and teachings of the Bible are not only consistent with historical facts but are also supported by a wealth of evidence from various fields. The character of God as revealed in the Scriptures, the fall of man, the promises of redemption, and the historical reality of Jesus Christ all demonstrate the Bible’s divine inspiration. The spread of Christianity and the ongoing discoveries of archaeology continue to affirm the truth and reliability of the biblical narrative. These facts collectively provide compelling evidence for the authenticity of Christianity and its foundational role in human history.
