Divine Inspiration and Authority

The Bible asserts its divine inspiration and authority, presenting itself as the living Word of God. In 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (UASV), Paul writes, “All Scripture is inspired of God and beneficial for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be fully competent, equipped for every good work.” This passage underscores the belief that the entire Bible is God-breathed, making it authoritative and relevant for all aspects of life.

Peter further affirms the divine origin of Scripture in 2 Peter 1:20-21 (UASV): “But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” This confirms that the messages contained within the Bible are not of human origin but are the result of divine revelation, communicated through individuals inspired by the Holy Spirit.

The Living Nature of Scripture

The Bible is described as living and active, capable of transforming lives and revealing the will of God. Hebrews 4:12 (UASV) declares, “For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” This dynamic nature of God’s Word enables it to penetrate the depths of the human heart, bringing conviction, guidance, and renewal.

The Eternal Word

The Bible presents itself as eternal, unchanging, and enduring through all generations. Isaiah 40:8 (UASV) proclaims, “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever.” This verse highlights the permanence and reliability of God’s Word, contrasting it with the transient nature of earthly things.

Jesus reinforces this idea in Matthew 24:35 (UASV), stating, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” The eternal nature of Scripture underscores its enduring relevance and authority, providing a stable foundation for faith and practice in every age.

The Power to Transform

The Bible has the power to transform lives, guiding individuals to salvation and spiritual maturity. Romans 1:16 (UASV) declares, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.” The gospel message, as revealed in Scripture, carries the power to bring people to faith in Jesus Christ and to transform their lives through the Holy Spirit.

James 1:21 (UASV) emphasizes the transformative power of God’s Word: “Therefore, putting aside all filthiness and all that remains of wickedness, in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls.” This verse highlights the necessity of receiving and internalizing the Word of God for spiritual growth and salvation.

The Role of the Holy Spirit

There is no indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We are guided by the Spirit-inspired Word of God. The words translated “understand” in 1 Corinthians 2:12 and 14 are best understood as meaning something other than simply acquiring a correct mental grasp of meaning. They refer rather to embracing these biblical truths as true. It is probably best to see the expressions “does not accept,” “folly,” and “not able to understand” as referring to various ways in which the unbeliever critiques the divine revelation. 1 Corinthians 2:14 does not mean the unbeliever cannot understand the Bible without the Holy Spirit. It means the unbeliever sees it as foolish and rejects its truths. The Christian is guided by having the mind of Christ. (1 Corinthians 2:16) How do we acquire the mind of Christ? He does so by being biblically minded. How do we become biblically minded?

We do so by understanding that the Bible goes beyond surface reading—it requires a careful analysis of its genres, historical context, and language. This book serves as a foundational guide for such an examination, requiring no prior understanding of biblical languages or hermeneutics yet empowering the reader with a working knowledge of biblical interpretation. I shed light on the multifaceted nature of biblical study and interpretation. I instruct readers on how to discern the various biblical genres and understand the original meanings intended by the Bible authors from a conservative grammatical-historical perspective. But more than that, he guides readers on how to apply these timeless truths to their own lives.

Believer or unbeliever, the Scriptures must be interpreted with the conservative, objective hermeneutical-grammatical method of biblical interpretation. They must follow a conservative approach to biblical exegesis while meticulously exposing and critiquing the fallacies and biases prevalent in modern biblical criticism. All forms of liberal-moderate biblical criticism are fundamentally flawed and speculative. The book argues that these critical methodologies constitute an ongoing assault on the Bible, reinforcing scholarly biases and distancing biblical interpretation from truth. The ultimate goal is to equip readers with a clear understanding of conservative exegetical principles and methods, demonstrating how these approaches are grounded in an unswerving commitment to the authority and inerrancy of Scripture, thereby offering an antidote to the subjective and ideologically skewed practices of modern biblical criticism. It is also a warning: Biblical criticism has opened the gates to a flood of pseudo-scholarly works whose influence has been to undermine people’s confidence in the Bible.

The Bible’s Practical Wisdom

The Bible is not only a source of theological truths but also offers practical wisdom for daily living. Proverbs 3:5-6 (UASV) advises, “Trust in Jehovah with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” This timeless counsel encourages reliance on God’s wisdom rather than human reasoning, promising divine guidance in all aspects of life.

The Psalms are another rich source of practical wisdom, offering comfort, encouragement, and instruction. Psalm 119:105 (UASV) affirms, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” This metaphor illustrates how the Scriptures provide guidance and direction, illuminating the path of righteousness and helping believers navigate life’s challenges.

The Fulfillment of Prophecy

One of the most compelling evidences of the Bible’s divine inspiration is the fulfillment of prophecy. The Scriptures contain numerous prophecies that have been fulfilled with remarkable accuracy, demonstrating the reliability and divine origin of God’s Word.

Messianic Prophecies

The prophecies concerning the coming of the Messiah are particularly significant. For example, Isaiah 7:14 (UASV) foretells, “Therefore Jehovah himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel.” This prophecy is fulfilled in the New Testament with the birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:22-23), affirming the reliability of the prophetic word.

Micah 5:2 (UASV) predicts the birthplace of the Messiah: “But as for you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you One will go forth for Me to be ruler in Israel. His goings forth are from long ago, from the days of eternity.” This prophecy is fulfilled in Jesus’ birth in Bethlehem, as recorded in Matthew 2:1-6.

Prophecies Concerning Nations

The Bible also contains prophecies concerning the rise and fall of nations, many of which have been fulfilled in history. For instance, the fall of Babylon is predicted in Isaiah 13:19-20 (UASV): “And Babylon, the beauty of kingdoms, the glory of the Chaldeans’ pride, will be as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. It will never be inhabited or lived in from generation to generation.” This prophecy was fulfilled when Babylon fell to the Medo-Persian Empire in 539 B.C.E.

The Coherence of Scripture

The Bible, despite being composed by numerous authors over many centuries, maintains a remarkable coherence and unity. This internal consistency is evidence of its divine inspiration. The central theme of redemption runs throughout the entire Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, presenting a unified message of God’s plan for humanity.

The coherence of Scripture is evident in the way the Old and New Testaments complement and fulfill each other. Jesus Himself affirmed this unity in Luke 24:27 (UASV): “Then beginning with Moses and with all the prophets, He explained to them the things concerning Himself in all the Scriptures.” This demonstrates that the entire Bible, both Old and New Testaments, points to Jesus Christ and His redemptive work.

The Authority of Scripture

The authority of Scripture is a foundational belief for Christians, as it is seen as the ultimate standard for faith and practice. Jesus affirmed the authority of the Scriptures in John 10:35 (UASV), stating, “If he called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken).” This assertion underscores the inviolability and reliability of God’s Word.

The apostle Paul also emphasized the authority of Scripture in his ministry. In 2 Timothy 2:15 (UASV), he instructs Timothy, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.” This exhortation highlights the importance of correctly interpreting and teaching the Scriptures, recognizing their authoritative role in guiding believers.

The Role of Scripture in Spiritual Growth

The Bible is essential for spiritual growth and maturity. 1 Peter 2:2 (UASV) encourages believers, “Like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation.” This metaphor emphasizes the necessity of regular engagement with Scripture for spiritual nourishment and development.

The process of sanctification, or becoming more like Christ, is also deeply connected to the Word of God. Jesus prayed in John 17:17 (UASV), “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.” The truth of Scripture plays a crucial role in transforming believers’ lives, helping them to grow in holiness and righteousness.

The Global Impact of the Bible

The influence of the Bible extends far beyond individual lives, shaping cultures and societies throughout history. The moral and ethical teachings of Scripture have informed the development of legal systems, educational institutions, and social values around the world.

Psalm 119:89 (UASV) declares, “Forever, O Jehovah, your word is settled in heaven.” This affirmation of the eternal nature and authority of God’s Word underscores its enduring relevance and impact across generations and cultures.

The Bible’s teachings on justice, compassion, and human dignity have inspired countless acts of charity, reform, and social justice. For example, the abolition of slavery in the 19th century was significantly influenced by biblical principles, as Christian abolitionists drew upon Scriptures such as Galatians 3:28 (UASV), “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”
