Inner Beauty Over Outward Appearance
In today’s world, there is significant emphasis on outward appearance, particularly regarding women. However, Jehovah values the inner person far more than external adornment. Proverbs 31:30 declares, “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears Jehovah is to be praised.” This scriptural perspective highlights that true beauty stems from a heart devoted to Jehovah. Proverbs 16:31 further emphasizes that a gray head is a crown of glory when it is found in the way of righteousness.
Peter also advises women not to let their adornment be merely external but to focus on the “imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God” (1 Peter 3:3-4). This instruction underscores the importance of cultivating inner beauty through godly character.
Exemplary Women in Scripture
The Bible records numerous examples of faithful women who displayed admirable qualities and served Jehovah with zeal. In the first century, some women ministered to Jesus and his apostles. Luke 8:1-3 recounts how certain women, including Mary Magdalene and Joanna, supported Jesus and His disciples from their resources. These women demonstrated remarkable faith and dedication.
Later, Christian women became zealous evangelizers and provided valuable support to male leaders in the early church. Notably, the apostle Paul acknowledged the contributions of several women. He mentioned Tryphaena and Tryphosa, who were “women who are working hard in the Lord,” and Persis, who “performed many labors in the Lord” (Romans 16:12). Euodia and Syntyche also strived alongside Paul in the work of the gospel (Philippians 4:2-3).
Hospitality and Support
Priscilla, along with her husband Aquila, is a prime example of a hospitable and supportive woman in the early Christian congregation. Paul stayed with them in Corinth, where they worked together as tentmakers (Acts 18:1-3). Priscilla and Aquila later moved to Ephesus and Rome, where they continued to show hospitality by hosting congregation meetings in their home (Acts 18:18-19; 1 Corinthians 16:19). Their willingness to risk their lives for Paul and their active participation in teaching Apollos (Acts 18:24-26) underscores Priscilla’s dedication and courage.
Women Without Husbands
Jehovah has always shown special concern for widows and single women. He remains deeply interested in their welfare today. James 1:27 describes pure and undefiled religion as caring for orphans and widows in their distress. God’s care extends to single mothers and women who remain unmarried by choice or circumstance.
An example of Jehovah’s care for single women is seen in the story of Jephthah’s daughter. She was commended and encouraged by the daughters of Israel for her sacrifice (Judges 11:30-40). Similarly, single sisters today should receive heartfelt commendation and support from the Christian congregation.
Challenges of Single Parenthood
Christian women who are single parents face numerous challenges, but Jehovah promises to support them. Psalm 68:19 reassures, “Blessed be Jehovah, who daily carries the load for us.” Single parents are encouraged to rely on Jehovah for help in raising their children according to biblical principles. Praying with their children and inculcating God’s Word into their hearts are practical ways to seek Jehovah’s guidance and blessing (Deuteronomy 6:6-7; Proverbs 22:6).
Subjection as a Dignified Role
God created woman as a complement to man, and the wife’s subjection to her husband dignifies her by allowing her to use her gifts in harmony with God’s will. Proverbs 31:11, 16, and 20 describe the capable wife as industrious and resourceful, contributing significantly to her family and community. A modest, God-fearing woman does not seek self-promotion but uses her talents to serve others and glorify Jehovah (Galatians 6:10; Titus 2:3-5).
Queen Esther exemplifies a woman who balanced modesty and strength. Despite her beauty, she remained submissive and respectful to her husband, King Ahasuerus, and her cousin Mordecai. Esther’s bold actions to save her people demonstrate her faith and courage, qualities that Jehovah used mightily (Esther 3:8-4:17; 7:1-10).
Conclusion: A Call to Faithful Service
God-fearing women throughout history have shown exclusive devotion to Jehovah and His worship. Christian sisters today are encouraged to continue cultivating their inner beauty and serving Jehovah faithfully. As Proverbs 31:31 states, “Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her works praise her in the gates.” May each faithful sister be recognized and praised for her devotion to Jehovah and her contributions to the Christian congregation.
