The Definition of Faith
In the Christian journey, faith is foundational. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as “the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” This biblical definition frames faith as complete trust and confidence in God, based not on physical evidence but on spiritual assurance. Faith is essential for the believer’s relationship with God, as Hebrews 11:6 states, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.”
Faith Exemplified in Scripture
The Bible provides numerous examples of faith in action. Abraham, often called the father of faith, demonstrated what it means to live by faith when he obeyed God’s call to leave his homeland without knowing where he was going (Hebrews 11:8). His journey was marked by a steadfast reliance on God’s promises, even when they seemed impossible, exemplified by his willingness to sacrifice Isaac, believing God could raise him from the dead (Hebrews 11:17-19).
Similarly, Moses’ life reflects a journey of faith as he led the Israelites out of Egypt. He chose to endure hardship with the people of God rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin (Hebrews 11:24-27), because he was “looking ahead to his reward.” Moses’ faith was characterized by his reverence for God and his steadfastness in the face of Pharaoh’s opposition.
The Role of Faith in Salvation and Beyond
Faith’s role extends beyond the Old Testament examples; it is the means by which salvation is received in the New Testament. Ephesians 2:8-9 clarifies this: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast.” Faith, therefore, is not a human work but a gift from God, enabling believers to trust in Christ’s atoning death and resurrection for their salvation.
After salvation, faith does not become redundant but continues to be vital in the believer’s life. Romans 1:17 states, “For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: ‘The righteous will live by faith.'” This indicates that the Christian life is to be lived in the same way it began—by faith. Each step of the Christian journey is to be taken in dependence on God, trusting in His Word and His Spirit to guide and sustain.
Challenges to Faith
Living by faith is not portrayed in Scripture as an easy or trouble-free path. Rather, it involves trials and challenges that are used by God to strengthen faith. James 1:2-4 encourages believers to consider it pure joy when facing trials because such tests produce perseverance, leading to mature and complete faith. Similarly, 1 Peter 1:6-7 speaks of rejoicing, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.
Living Faith Through Action
James 2:17 succinctly states, “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” This passage highlights the dynamic nature of faith; it must be evidenced by actions that reflect a life changed by the gospel. Faith motivates obedience to Christ’s commands, service in His kingdom, love and sacrifice for others, and moral integrity in daily living.
The Christian journey, therefore, is marked by a faith that trusts deeply, obeys boldly, endures trials steadfastly, and acts righteously. This faith is not static but grows and develops through continual reliance on God and His promises, regular feeding on His Word, and fellowship with His people. As believers commit to living by faith, they find their lives increasingly aligned with the will and purposes of God, revealing the transformative power of the gospel in tangible, life-changing ways.
