8 ΟἴδαμενWe have known δὲbut ὅτιthat καλὸςfine ὁthe νόμοςLaw ἐάνif ever τιςanyone αὐτῷto it νομίμωςlawfully χρῆται,is using, 9 εἰδὼςhaving known τοῦτοthis ὅτιthat δικαίῳto righteous (one) νόμοςlaw οὐnot κεῖται,is lying down, ἀνόμοιςto lawless (ones) δὲbut καὶand ἀνυποτάκτοις,non-self-subjecting (ones), ἀσεβέσιto irreverential (ones) καὶand ἁμαρτωλοῖς,to sinners, ἀνοσίοιςto unloyal (ones) καὶand βεβήλοις,to profane (ones), πατρολῴαιςto smiters of fathers καὶand μητρολῴαις,to smiters of mothers, ἀνδροφόνοις,to murderers of male persons, 10 πόρνοις,to fornicators, ἀρσενοκοίταις,to men lying with males, ἀνδραποδισταῖς,to man-trappers, ψεύσταις,to liars, ἐπιόρκοις,to oath breakers, καὶand εἴif τιanything ἕτερονdifferent τῇto the ὑγιαινούσῃbeing healthful διδασκαλίᾳteaching ἀντίκειται,is lying against, 11 κατὰaccording to τὸthe εὐαγγέλιονgood news τῆςof the δόξηςglory τοῦof the μακαρίουhappy θεοῦ,God, ὃwhich ἐπιστεύθηνwas entrusted with ἐγώ.I.

12 ΧάρινThanks ἔχωI am having τῷto the (one) ἐνδυναμώσαντίhaving empowered μεme Χριστῷto Christ ἸησοῦJesus τῷthe κυρίῳLord ἡμῶν,of us, ὅτιbecause πιστόνfaithful μεme ἡγήσατοhe considered θέμενοςhaving put εἰςinto διακονίαν,service, 13 τὸthe πρότερονformer [time] ὄντα(one) being βλάσφημονblasphemer καὶand διώκτηνpersecutor καὶand ὑβριστήν·insolent (man); ἀλλὰbut ἠλεήθην,I was shown mercy, ὅτιbecause ἀγνοῶνbeing ignorant ἐποίησαI did ἐνin ἀπιστίᾳ,unbelief, 14 ὑπερεπλεόνασενbecame beyond more δὲbut ἡthe χάριςgrace τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us μετὰwith πίστεωςfaith καὶand ἀγάπηςlove τῆςthe (one) ἐνin ΧριστῷChrist Ἰησοῦ.Jesus. 15 πιστὸςFaithful ὁthe λόγοςword καὶand πάσηςof all ἀποδοχῆςreception back ἄξιος,worthy, ὅτιthat ΧριστὸςChrist ἸησοῦςJesus ἦλθενcame εἰςinto τὸνthe κόσμονworld ἁμαρτωλοὺςsinners σῶσαι·to save; ὧνof whom πρῶτόςfirst εἰμιam ἐγώ,I, 16 ἀλλὰbut διὰthrough τοῦτοthis ἠλεήθην,I was shown mercy , ἵναin order that ἐνin ἐμοὶme πρώτῳfirst ἐνδείξηταιmight show in ΧριστὸςChrist ἸησοῦςJesus τὴνthe ἅπασανall μακροθυμίαν,longness of spirit, πρὸςtoward ὑποτύπωσινsubtype τῶνof the (ones) μελλόντωνbeing about πιστεύεινto be believing ἐπ’upon αὐτῷhim εἰςinto ζωὴνlife αἰώνιον.everlasting.

17 ΤῷTo the δὲbut βασιλεῖking τῶνof the αἰώνων,ages, ἀφθάρτῳ,to incorruptible, ἀοράτῳ,invisible, μόνῳonly θεῷ,God, τιμὴhonor καὶand δόξαglory εἰςinto τοὺςthe αἰῶναςages τῶνof the αἰώνων·ages; ἀμήν.amen.

18 ΤαύτηνThis τὴνthe παραγγελίανcharging παρατίθεμαίI am putting alongside σοι,to you, τέκνονchild Τιμόθεε,Timothy, κατὰaccording to τὰςthe προαγούσαςgoing before ἐπὶupon σὲyou προφητείας,prophecies, ἵναin order that t στρατεύῃyou may do military service ἐνin αὐταῖςthem τὴνthe καλὴνfine στρατείαν,military service, 19 ἔχωνhaving πίστινfaith καὶand ἀγαθὴνgood συνείδησιν,conscience, ἥνwhich τινεςsome (ones) ἀπωσάμενοιhaving pushed aside περὶabout τὴνthe πίστινfaith ἐναυάγησαν·experienced shipwreck; 20 ὧνof whom ἐστὶνis ὙμέναιοςHymenaeus καὶand ᾿Αλέξανδρος,Alexander, οὓςwhom παρέδωκαI gave over τῷto the ΣατανᾷSatan ἵναin order that παιδευθῶσιthey might be disciplined μὴnot βλασφημεῖν.to be blaspheming.

CHAPTER 2♠

1 ΠαρακαλῶI am encouraging οὖνtherefore πρῶτονfirst (thing) πάντωνof all (things) ποιεῖσθαιto be being made δεήσεις,supplications, προσευχάς,prayers, ἐντεύξεις,intercessions, εὐχαριστίας,thanksgivings, ὑπὲρover πάντωνall ἀνθρώπων,men, 2 ὑπὲρover βασιλέωνkings καὶand πάντωνall τῶνthe (ones) ἐνin ὑπεροχῇsuperiority ὄντων,(ones) being, ἵναin order that ἤρεμονstill καὶand ἡσύχιονquiet βίονliving διάγωμενwe may be leading through ἐνin πάσῃall εὐσεβείᾳrevering well καὶand σεμνότητι.seriousness. 3 τοῦτοThis καλὸνfine καὶand ἀπόδεκτονreceivable back ἐνώπιονin sight τοῦof the σωτῆροςSavior ἡμῶνof us θεοῦ,of God 4 ὃςwho πάνταςall ἀνθρώπουςmen θέλειis willing σωθῆναιto be saved καὶand εἰςinto ἐπίγνωσινaccurate knowledge ἀληθείαςof truth ἐλθεῖν.to come. 5 ΕἷςOne γὰρfor θεός,God, εἷςone καὶalso μεσίτηςmediator θεοῦof God καὶand ἀνθρώπωνof men ἄνθρωποςman ΧριστὸςChrist Ἰησοῦς,Jesus, 6 ὁthe (one) δοὺςhaving given ἑαυτὸνhimself ἀντίλυτρονcorresponding ransom ὑπὲρover πάντων,all (ones), τὸthe μαρτύριονwitness καιροῖςto appointed times ἰδίοις·own; 7 εἰςinto ὃwhich (thing) ἐτέθηνwas put ἐγὼI κῆρυξpreacher καὶand ἀπόστολος,—apostle,— ἀλήθειανtruth λέγω,I am saying, οὐnot ψεύδομαι,—I am lying,— διδάσκαλοςteacher ἐθνῶνof nations ἐνin πίστειfaith καὶand ἀληθείᾳ.truth.

8 ΒούλομαιI am wishing οὖνtherefore προσεύχεσθαιto pray τοὺςthe ἄνδραςmale persons ἐνin παντὶevery τόπῳ,place, ἐπαίρονταςlifting up upon ὁσίουςloyal χεῖραςhands χωρὶςapart from ὀργῆςwrath καὶand διαλογισμῶν.divided reckonings. 9 ὩσαύτωςAs-thus γυναῖκαςwomen ἐνin καταστολῇdress κοσμίῳadorning μετὰwith αἰδοῦςmodesty καὶand σωφροσύνηςsoundness of mind κοσμεῖνto be adorning ἑαυτάς,themselves, μὴnot ἐνin πλέγμασινbraiding καὶand χρυσίῳgold ἢor μαργαρίταιςpearls ἢor ἱματισμῷgarb πολυτελεῖ,of much cost, 10 ἀλλ’but ὃwhat πρέπειis befitting γυναιξὶνto women ἐπαγγελλομέναιςpromising θεοσέβειαν,reverence of God, δι’through ἔργωνworks ἀγαθῶν.good.

11 ΓυνὴWoman ἐνin ἡσυχίᾳquietness μανθανέτωlet her be learning ἐνin πάσῃall ὑποταγῇ·subjection; 12 διδάσκεινto be teaching δὲbut γυναικὶto woman οὐκnot ἐπιτρέπω,I am permitting, οὐδὲnor αὐθεντεῖνto be playing master ἀνδρός,of male person, ἀλλ’but εἶναιto be ἐνin ἡσυχίᾳ.quietness. 13 ᾿ΑδὰμAdam γὰρfor πρῶτοςfirst ἐπλάσθη,was molded, εἶταthere (upon) Εὕα·Eve; 14 καὶand ᾿ΑδὰμAdam οὐκnot ἠπατήθη,was seduced, ἡthe δὲbut γυνὴwoman ἐξαπατηθεῖσαhaving been seduced out ἐνin παραβάσειtransgression γέγονεν.she has come to be. 15 σωθήσεταιShe will be saved δὲbut διὰthrough τῆςthe τεκνογονίας,childbearing, ἐὰνif ever μείνωσινthey might remain ἐνin πίστειfaith καὶand ἀγάπῃlove καὶand ἁγιασμῷsanctification μετὰwith σωφροσύνης.soundness of mind.

CHAPTER 3♠

1 πιστὸςFaithful ὁthe λόγος.word.

ΕἴIf τιςanyone ἐπισκοπῆςof overseership ὀρέγεται,is reaching out after, καλοῦfine ἔργουwork ἐπιθυμεῖ.he is desiring. 2 δεῖIt is binding οὖνtherefore τὸνthe ἐπίσκοπονoverseer ἀνεπίλημπτονirreprehensible εἶναι,to be, μιᾶςof one γυναικὸςwoman ἄνδρα,male person, νηφάλιον,sober, σώφρονα,sound in mind, κόσμιον,arranged, φιλόξενον,fond of strangers, διδακτικόν,qualified to teach, 3 μὴnot πάροινον,given to wine, μὴnot πλήκτην,dealing blows, ἀλλὰbut ἐπιεικῆ,yielding, ἄμαχον,not fighting, ἀφιλάργυρον,not fond of silver, 4 τοῦof the ἰδίουown οἴκουhousehold καλῶςfinely προϊστάμενον,standing before, τέκναchildren ἔχονταhaving ἐνin ὑποταγῇsubjection μετὰwith πάσηςall σεμνότητος·seriousness; 5 εἰif δέbut τιςanyone τοῦof the ἰδίουown οἴκουhousehold προστῆναιto stand before οὐκnot οἶδεν,he has known, πῶςhow ἐκκλησίαςof ecclesia θεοῦof God ἐπιμελήσεται;will he take care upon? 6 μὴnot νεόφυτον,neophyte, ἵναin order that μὴnot τυφωθεὶςhaving been made to smoke εἰςinto κρίμαjudgment ἐμπέσῃhe might fall in τοῦof the διαβόλου.Devil. 7 δεῖIt is binding δὲbut καὶalso μαρτυρίανwitness καλὴνfine ἔχεινto be having ἀπὸfrom τῶνthe (ones) ἔξωθεν,outside, ἵναin order that μὴnot εἰςinto ὀνειδισμὸνreproach ἐμπέσῃhe might fall in καὶand παγίδαsnare τοῦof the διαβόλου.Devil.

8 ΔιακόνουςServants ὡσαύτωςas-thus σεμνούς,serious, μὴnot διλόγους,double-talking, μὴnot οἴνῳto wine πολλῷmuch προσέχοντας,having [mind] toward, μὴnot αἰσχροκερδεῖς,[greedy] of disgraceful gain, 9 ἔχονταςhaving τὸthe μυστήριονmystery τῆςof the πίστεωςfaith ἐνin καθαρᾷclean συνειδήσει.conscience.

10 καὶAnd οὗτοιthese δὲbut δοκιμαζέσθωσανlet them be being proved πρῶτον,first, εἶταthere (upon) διακονείτωσανlet them be serving ἀνέγκλητοιunaccusable ὄντες.being.

11 γυναῖκαςWomen ὡσαύτωςas-thus σεμνάς,serious, μὴnot διαβόλους,devils, νηφαλίους,sober, πιστὰςfaithful ἐνin πᾶσιν.all (things).

12 διάκονοιServants ἔστωσανlet them be μιᾶςof one γυναικὸςwoman ἄνδρες,male persons, τέκνωνof children καλῶςfinely προϊστάμενοιstanding before καὶalso τῶνof the ἰδίωνown οἴκων·households; 13 οἱthe (ones) γὰρfor καλῶςfinely διακονήσαντεςhaving served βαθμὸνstep ἑαυτοῖςto themselves καλὸνfine περιποιοῦνταιthey are procuring καὶand πολλὴνmuch παρρησίανoutspokenness ἐνin πίστειfaith τῇthe ἐνin ΧριστῷChrist Ἰησοῦ.Jesus.

14 ΤαῦτάThese (things) σοιto you γράφω,I am writing, ἐλπίζωνhoping ἐλθεῖνto come πρὸςtoward σὲyou ἐνin τάχει,quickness, 15 ἐὰνif ever δὲbut βραδύνω,I may be slow, ἵναin order that εἰδῇςyou may know πῶςhow δεῖit is binding ἐνin οἴκῳhousehold θεοῦof God ἀναστρέφεσθαι,to be turning self up, ἥτιςwhich ἐστὶνis ἐκκλησίαecclesia θεοῦof God ζῶντος,living, στύλοςpillar καὶand ἑδραίωμαsupport τῆςof the ἀληθείας·truth; 16 καὶand ὁμολογουμένωςconfessedly μέγαgreat ἐστὶνis τὸthe τῆςof the εὐσεβείαςrevering well μυστήριον·mystery; ὋςWho ἐφανερώθηwas manifested ἐνin σαρκί,flesh, ἐδικαιώθηwas justified ἐνin πνεύματι,spirit, ὤφθηwas seen ἀγγέλοις,to angels, ἐκηρύχθηwas preached ἐνin ἔθνεσιν,nations, ἐπιστεύθηwas believed ἐνin κόσμῳ,world, ἀνελήμφθηwas taken up ἐνin δόξῃ.glory.

CHAPTER 4♠

1 ΤὸThe δὲbut πνεῦμαspirit ῥητῶςspokenly λέγειis saying ὅτιthat ἐνin ὑστέροιςlater καιροῖςappointed times ἀποστήσονταίwill stand away τινεςsome τῆςof the πίστεως,faith, προσέχοντεςhaving [mind] toward πνεύμασιto spirits πλάνοιςerrants καὶand διδασκαλίαιςto teachings δαιμονίωνof demons 2 ἐνin ὑποκρίσειhypocrisy ψευδολόγων,of sayers of lies, κεκαυστηριασμένωνof (ones) having been branded with hot iron τὴνthe ἰδίανown συνείδησιν,conscience, 3 κωλυόντωνof (ones) forbidding γαμεῖν,to be marrying, ἀπέχεσθαιto be holding selves from βρωμάτωνfoods ἃwhich ὁthe θεὸςGod ἔκτισενcreated εἰςinto μετάλημψινpartaking μετὰwith εὐχαριστίαςthanksgiving τοῖςto the πιστοῖςfaithful ones καὶand ἐπεγνωκόσιto (ones) having accurately known τὴνthe ἀλήθειαν.truth. 4 ὅτιBecause πᾶνevery κτίσμαcreation θεοῦof God καλόν,fine, καὶand οὐδὲνnothing ἀπόβλητονto be thrown away μετὰwith εὐχαριστίαςthanksgiving λαμβανόμενον,being received, 5 ἁγιάζεταιit is being sanctified γὰρfor διὰthrough λόγουword θεοῦof God καὶand ἐντεύξεως.intercession.

6 ΤαῦταThese (things) ὑποτιθέμενοςputting under τοῖςto the ἀδελφοῖςbrothers καλὸςfine ἔσῃyou will be διάκονοςservant Χριστοῦof Christ Ἰησοῦ,Jesus, ἐντρεφόμενοςbeing nourished on τοῖςto the λόγοιςwords τῆςof the πίστεωςfaith καὶand τῆςof the καλῆςfine διδασκαλίαςteaching ᾗto which παρηκολούθηκας,you have followed alongside, 7 τοὺςthe δὲbut βεβήλουςprofane καὶand γραώδειςold-womanish μύθουςmyths παραιτοῦ.be asking off for yourself. γύμναζεBe training (as gymnast) δὲbut σεαυτὸνyourself πρὸςtoward εὐσέβειαν·revering well; 8 ἡthe γὰρfor σωματικὴbodily γυμνασίαtraining (as gymnast) πρὸςtoward ὀλίγονlittle ἐστὶνis ὠφέλιμος,beneficial, ἡthe δὲbut εὐσέβειαrevering well πρὸςtoward πάνταall (things) ὠφέλιμόςbeneficial ἐστιν,is, ἐπαγγελίανpromise ἔχουσαhaving ζωῆςof life τῆςof the (one) νῦνnow καὶand τῆςof the (one) μελλούσης.being about (to come). 9 πιστὸςFaithful ὁthe λόγοςword καὶand πάσηςof all ἀποδοχῆςreception back ἄξιος,worthy, 10 εἰςinto τοῦτοthis γὰρfor κοπιῶμενwe are laboring καὶand ἀγωνιζόμεθα,we are struggling, ὅτιbecause ἠλπίκαμενwe have hoped ἐπὶupon θεῷGod ζῶντι,living, ὅςwho ἐστινis σωτὴρSavior πάντωνof all ἀνθρώπων,men, μάλισταmostly πιστῶν.of faithful (ones).

11 ΠαράγγελλεBe you charging ταῦταthese (things) καὶand δίδασκε.be you teaching. 12 μηδείςNo one σουof you τῆςof the νεότητοςyouth καταφρονείτω,let him be thinking down on, ἀλλὰbut τύποςtype γίνουbe becoming τῶνof the πιστῶνfaithful (ones) ἐνin λόγῳ,word, ἐνin ἀναστροφῇ,conduct, ἐνin ἀγάπῃ,love, ἐνin πίστει,faith, ἐνin ἁγνίᾳ.chasteness. 13 ἕωςUntil ἔρχομαιI am coming πρόσεχεbe you having [mind] toward τῇto the ἀναγνώσει,reading, τῇto the παρακλήσει,encouraging, τῇto the διδασκαλίᾳ.teaching. 14 μὴNot ἀμέλειbe your being careless τοῦof the ἐνin σοὶyou χαρίσματος,gracious gift, ὃwhich ἐδόθηwas given σοιto you διὰthrough προφητείαςprophecy μετὰwith ἐπιθέσεωςputting upon τῶνof the χειρῶνhands τοῦof the πρεσβυτερίου.presbytery. 15 ταῦταThese (things) μελέτα,be meditating on, ἐνin τούτοιςthese (things) ἴσθι,be you, ἵναin order that σουof you ἡthe προκοπὴstriking forward φανερὰmanifest ᾖmay be πᾶσιν·to all (ones); 16 ἔπεχεbe you having [mind] upon σεαυτῷto yourself καὶand τῇto the διδασκαλίᾳ·teaching; ἐπίμενεbe you remaining upon αὐτοῖς·to them; τοῦτοthis γὰρfor ποιῶνdoing καὶand σεαυτὸνyourself σώσειςyou will save καὶand τοὺςthe (ones) ἀκούοντάςhearing σου.of you

CHAPTER 5♠

1 ΠρεσβυτέρῳTo older man μὴnot ἐπιπλήξῃς,you should deal blow upon, ἀλλὰbut παρακάλειbe you entreating ὡςas πατέρα,father, νεωτέρουςyounger (ones) ὡςas ἀδελφούς,brothers, 2 πρεσβυτέραςolder [woman] ὡςas μητέρας,mothers, νεωτέραςyounger [women] ὡςas ἀδελφὰςsisters ἐνin πάσῃall ἁγνίᾳ.chasteness.

9 ΧήραWidow καταλεγέσθωlet be being put on list μὴnot ἔλαττονless ἐτῶνof years ἑξήκονταsixty γεγονυῖα,having become, ἑνὸςof one ἀνδρὸςmale person γυνή,woman, 10 ἐνin ἔργοιςworks καλοῖςfine μαρτυρουμένη,being witnessed about, εἰif ἐτεκνοτρόφησεν,she reared children, εἰif ἐξενοδόχησεν,she received strangers, εἰif ἁγίωνof holy (ones) πόδαςfeet ἔνιψεν,she washed, εἰif θλιβομένοιςto (ones) being put under tribulation ἐπήρκεσεν,she was sufficient upon, εἰif παντὶto every ἔργῳwork ἀγαθῷgood ἐπηκολούθησεν.she followed upon.

11 νεωτέραςYounger (ones) δὲbut χήραςwidows παραιτοῦ·be asking off for self; ὅτανwhenever γὰρfor καταστρηνιάσωσινthey might feel sexually impulsive τοῦof the χριστοῦ,Christ, γαμεῖνto be marrying θέλουσιν,they are willing, 12 ἔχουσαιhaving κρίμαjudgment ὅτιbecause τὴνthe πρώτηνfirst πίστινfaith ἠθέτησαν·they put aside; 13 ἅμαat the same time δὲbut καὶalso ἀργαὶineffective μανθάνουσιν,they are learning, περιερχόμεναιgoing about τὰςthe οἰκίας,houses, οὐnot μόνονonly δὲbut ἀργαὶineffective ἀλλὰbut καὶalso φλύαροιgossipers καὶand περίεργοι,workers around, λαλοῦσαιspeaking τὰthe (things) μὴnot δέοντα.binding. 14 βούλομαιI am wishing οὖνtherefore νεωτέραςyounger [women] γαμεῖν,to be marrying, τεκνογονεῖν,to be bearing children, οἰκοδεσποτεῖν,to be managing household, μηδεμίανnot one ἀφορμὴνonrush off διδόναιto be giving τῷto the ἀντικειμένῳ(one) lying against λοιδορίαςof reviling χάριν·thanks; 15 ἤδηalready γάρfor τινεςsome ἐξετράπησανwere turned out ὀπίσωbehind τοῦthe Σατανᾶ.Satan. 16 εἴIf τιςanyone πιστὴfaithful [woman] ἔχειis having χήρας,widows, ἐπαρκείτωlet her be sufficing upon αὐταῖς,to them, καὶand μὴnot βαρείσθωlet be weighted down ἡthe ἐκκλησία,ecclesia, ἵναin order that ταῖςto the (ones) ὄντωςessentially χήραιςwidows ἐπαρκέσῃ.it might suffice upon.

22 ΧεῖραςHands ταχέωςquickly μηδενὶto no one ἐπιτίθει,be you putting upon, μηδὲneither κοινώνειbe you sharing ἁμαρτίαιςto sins ἀλλοτρίαις·belonging to others; σεαυτὸνyourself ἁγνὸνchaste τήρει.be you keeping.

23 ΜηκέτιNot yet ὑδροπότει,be your drinking water, ἀλλὰbut οἴνῳto wine ὀλίγῳlittle χρῶbe you using διὰthrough τὸνthe στόμαχονstomach καὶand τὰςthe πυκνάςfrequent σουof you ἀσθενείας.sicknesses.

24 ΤινῶνOf some ἀνθρώπωνmen αἱthe ἁμαρτίαιsins πρόδηλοίbefore [all] evident εἰσιν,are, προάγουσαιgoing before εἰςinto κρίσιν,judgment, τισὶνto some (ones) δὲbut καὶalso ἐπακολουθοῦσιν·they are following upon; 25 ὡσαύτωςas-thus καὶalso τὰthe ἔργαworks τὰthe καλὰfine πρόδηλα,before [all] evident, καὶand τὰthe (ones) ἄλλωςotherwise ἔχονταhaving κρυβῆναιto be hid οὐnot δύνανται.they are able.

CHAPTER 6♠

1 ὍσοιAs many as εἰσὶνare ὑπὸunder ζυγὸνyoke δοῦλοι,slaves, τοὺςthe ἰδίουςown δεσπόταςmasters πάσηςof all τιμῆςhonor ἀξίουςworthy ἡγείσθωσαν,let them be considering, ἵναin order that μὴnot τὸthe ὄνομαname τοῦof the θεοῦGod καὶand ἡthe διδασκαλίαteaching βλασφημῆται.may be blasphemed. 2 οἱThe (ones) δὲbut πιστοὺςfaithful ἔχοντεςhaving δεσπόταςmasters μὴnot καταφρονείτωσαν,let them be thinking down, ὅτιbecause ἀδελφοίbrothers εἰσιν·they are; ἀλλὰbut μᾶλλονrather δουλευέτωσαν,let them be slaving, ὅτιbecause πιστοίfaithful εἰσινthey are καὶand ἀγαπητοὶloved οἱthe (ones) τῆςof the εὐεργεσίαςworking well ἀντιλαμβανόμενοι.receiving in return.

ΤαῦταThese (things) δίδασκεbe you teaching καὶand παρακάλει.be you encouraging. 3 εἴIf τιςanyone ἑτεροδιδασκαλεῖis teaching differently καὶand μὴnot προσέρχεταιhe is coming toward ὑγιαίνουσιto (ones) being healthful λόγοις,words, τοῖςto the (ones) τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us ἸησοῦJesus Χριστοῦ,Christ, καὶand τῇto the κατ’according to εὐσέβειανrevering well διδασκαλίᾳ,to teaching, 4 τετύφωται,he has been made to smoke, μηδὲνnothing ἐπιστάμενος,knowing well, ἀλλὰbut νοσῶνbeing diseased περὶabout ζητήσειςseekings καὶand λογομαχίας,word fights, ἐξout of ὧνwhich (things) γίνεταιcomes to be φθόνος,envy, ἔρις,strife, βλασφημίαι,blasphemies, ὑπόνοιαιsuspicions πονηραί,wicked, 5 διαπαρατριβαὶrubbings alongside through διεφθαρμένωνof (ones) having been thoroughly corrupted ἀνθρώπωνmen τὸνthe νοῦνmind καὶand ἀπεστερημένωνhaving been despoiled τῆςof the ἀληθείας,truth, νομιζόντωνinferring πορισμὸνacquisition εἶναιto be τὴνthe εὐσέβειαν.revering well. 6 ἔστινIt is δὲbut πορισμὸςacquisition μέγαςgreat ἡthe εὐσέβειαrevering well μετὰwith αὐταρκείας·self-sufficiency; 7 οὐδὲνnothing γὰρfor εἰσηνέγκαμενwe bore within εἰςinto τὸνthe κόσμον,world, ὅτιbecause οὐδὲneither ἐξενεγκεῖνto bear out τιanything δυνάμεθα·we are able; 8 ἔχοντεςhaving δὲbut διατροφὰςnourishments through καὶand σκεπάσματα,coverings, τούτοιςto these (things) ἀρκεσθησόμεθα.we shall be satisfied.

9 οἱThe (ones) δὲbut βουλόμενοιwishing πλουτεῖνto be rich ἐμπίπτουσινare falling in εἰςinto πειρασμὸνtemptation καὶand παγίδαsnare καὶand ἐπιθυμίαςdesires πολλὰςmany ἀνοήτουςsenseless καὶand βλαβεράς,hurtful, αἵτινεςwhich βυθίζουσινare dragging to bottom τοὺςthe ἀνθρώπουςmen εἰςinto ὄλεθρονdestruction καὶand ἀπώλειαν·ruin; 10 ῥίζαroot γὰρfor πάντωνof all τῶνthe κακῶνbad (things) ἐστὶνis ἡthe φιλαργυρία,fondness of silver, ἧςof which τινὲςsome ὀρεγόμενοιreaching out ἀπεπλανήθησανwere led off into error ἀπὸfrom τῆςthe πίστεωςfaith καὶand ἑαυτοὺςthemselves περιέπειρανthey pierced around ὀδύναιςto pains πολλαῖς.many.

11 ΣὺYou δέ,but, ὦO ἄνθρωπεman θεοῦ,of God, ταῦταthese (things) φεῦγε·be fleeing; δίωκεbe you pursuing δὲbut δικαιοσύνην,righteousness, εὐσέβειαν,revering well, πίστιν,faith, ἀγάπην,love, ὑπομονήν,endurance, πραϋπαθίαν.mildness of temper. 12 ἀγωνίζουBe you struggling τὸνthe καλὸνfine ἀγῶναstruggle τῆςof the πίστεως,faith, ἐπιλαβοῦtake you for self upon τῆςof the αἰωνίουeverlasting ζωῆς,life, εἰςinto ἣνwhich ἐκλήθηςyou were called καὶand ὡμολόγησαςyou confessed τὴνthe καλὴνfine ὁμολογίανconfession ἐνώπιονin sight πολλῶνof many μαρτύρων.witnesses.

13 παραγγέλλωI am laying charge σοιto you ἐνώπιονin sight τοῦof the θεοῦGod τοῦthe (one) ζωογονοῦντοςpreserving life τὰthe πάνταall (things) καὶand Χριστοῦof Christ ἸησοῦJesus τοῦthe (one) μαρτυρήσαντοςhaving borne witness ἐπὶupon ΠοντίουPontius ΠειλάτουPilate τὴνthe καλὴνfine ὁμολογίαν,confession, 14 τηρῆσαίto observe σεyou τὴνthe ἐντολὴνcommandment ἄσπιλονspotless ἀνεπίλημπτονirreprehensible μέχριuntil τῆςthe ἐπιφανείαςmanifestation τοῦof the κυρίουLord ἡμῶνof us Ἰησοῦof Jesus Χριστοῦ,Christ, 15 ἣνwhich καιροῖςto appointed times ἰδίοιςown δείξειwill show ὁthe μακάριοςhappy καὶand μόνοςonly δυνάστης,Potentate, ὁthe βασιλεὺςKing τῶνof the (ones) βασιλευόντωνruling as kings καὶand κύριοςLord τῶνof the (ones) κυριευόντων,ruling as lords, 16 ὁthe μόνοςonly (one) ἔχωνhaving ἀθανασίαν,immortality, φῶςlight οἰκῶνdwelling in ἀπρόσιτον,unapproachable, ὃνwhom εἶδενsaw οὐδεὶςno one ἀνθρώπωνof men οὐδὲnor ἰδεῖνto see δύναται·he is able; ᾧto him τιμὴhonor καὶand κράτοςmight αἰώνιον·everlasting; ἀμήν.amen.

17 ΤοῖςTo the πλουσίοιςrich (ones) ἐνin τῷthe νῦνnow αἰῶνιage παράγγελλεbe laying charge μὴnot ὑψηλοφρονεῖνto be high-minded μηδὲnot-but ἠλπικέναιto have put hope ἐπὶupon πλούτουof riches ἀδηλότητι,non-evidence, ἀλλ’but ἐπὶupon θεῷGod τῷthe (one) παρέχοντιhaving alongside ἡμῖνto us πάνταall (things) πλουσίωςrichly εἰςinto ἀπόλαυσιν,enjoyment, 18 ἀγαθοεργεῖν,to be working at good, πλουτεῖνto be rich ἐνin ἔργοιςworks καλοῖς,fine, εὐμεταδότουςwell-distributing (ones) εἶναι,to be, κοινωνικούς,ready to share, 19 ἀποθησαυρίζονταςtreasuring off ἑαυτοῖςto themselves θεμέλιονfoundation καλὸνfine εἰςinto τὸthe (thing) μέλλον,being about (to come), ἵναin order that ἐπιλάβωνταιthey might take for themselves upon τῆςof the ὄντωςessentially ζωῆς.life.

20 ῏ΩO Τιμόθεε,Timothy, τὴνthe παραθήκηνwhat is put beside φύλαξον,guard you, ἐκτρεπόμενοςturning self out of τὰςthe βεβήλουςprofane κενοφωνίαςempty voicings καὶand ἀντιθέσειςantitheses τῆςof the ψευδωνύμουfalsely named γνώσεως,knowledge, 21 ἥνwhich τινεςsome ἐπαγγελλόμενοιpromising περὶabout τὴνthe πίστινfaith ἠστόχησαν.they deviated.
