The Nature and Definition of True Religion

True religion is defined by its adherence to the teachings and principles outlined in the Bible. It is not merely a set of rituals or traditions but a way of life that reflects the will of God as revealed in Scripture. True religion involves a genuine relationship with Jehovah and a commitment to living according to His commandments. James 1:27 emphasizes this: “Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained from the world.”

The Proliferation of Christian Denominations

The multitude of Christian denominations we see today stems from a variety of historical, cultural, and doctrinal factors. As early as a few decades after the apostles’ deaths, schisms and factions began to form. This fragmentation is noted by Will Durant, who observed the rapid diversification of Christianity into numerous sects. By the second century, there were already significant differences in belief and practice among Christians, leading to the formation of various denominations.

Paul addressed the issue of divisions in the early church in 1 Corinthians 1:10, urging believers to be united: “I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” This appeal highlights the importance of doctrinal unity and the dangers of following human leaders instead of adhering to the teachings of Christ.

The Source of Religious Confusion

The Bible identifies Satan as the instigator of religious confusion. 2 Corinthians 4:4 describes him as “the god of this age,” who blinds the minds of unbelievers. This deception leads people away from the true worship of God and towards false religions and human traditions. 1 Corinthians 10:20 warns that sacrifices made to idols are offered to demons, not to God.

True worship must be directed to Jehovah alone, and any form of idolatry or false worship is unacceptable. The sons of Israel repeatedly fell into idolatry, serving the Baals and other gods, which kindled Jehovah’s anger (Judges 10:6-7). This historical lesson emphasizes the importance of exclusive devotion to God.

Evaluating the Acceptability of Denominations

Not all denominations are acceptable to God. Jesus criticized the Pharisees for their hypocritical worship, which was based on human traditions rather than God’s commandments (Mark 7:6-7). Similarly, Paul noted that zeal for God without accurate knowledge leads to misguided worship (Romans 10:2-3).

A denomination’s teachings must be evaluated against the Bible to determine their truthfulness. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 affirms that all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. Therefore, any teaching that contradicts the Bible is false and should be rejected.

The Fallacy of “Good” in All Denominations

While many denominations teach moral principles such as honesty and integrity, this alone does not make them acceptable to God. Just as drinking water contaminated with poison is harmful despite its clear appearance, so is following a religion that mixes truth with error. 2 Corinthians 11:14-15 cautions that Satan disguises himself as an angel of light, and his servants appear as servants of righteousness. Therefore, discernment is necessary to identify and avoid false teachings.

The Challenge of Leaving One’s Parental Religion

Leaving the religion of one’s parents can be a difficult decision, but it is necessary if their beliefs and practices are contrary to the Bible. Jesus emphasized the need to prioritize loyalty to Him over familial ties (Matthew 10:37). Joshua 24:14 urged the Israelites to forsake the gods of their ancestors and serve Jehovah with sincerity and faithfulness.

Early Christians turned away from the futile traditions inherited from their forefathers, embracing the redemptive sacrifice of Christ (1 Peter 1:18-19). This example underscores the importance of following biblical truth, even if it means departing from familial religious traditions.

REASONING FROM THE SCRIPTURES APOLOGETICS

The Biblical View on Interfaith and Ecumenism

The Bible clearly opposes interfaith practices and ecumenism that compromise doctrinal purity. Jesus rebuked the religious leaders of His time, stating that their true allegiance was to Satan rather than God (John 8:42-47). Paul warned against forming partnerships with unbelievers, as righteousness has no fellowship with lawlessness (2 Corinthians 6:14-17).

Revelation 18:4 calls God’s people to come out of Babylon, a symbol of false religion, to avoid sharing in her sins and receiving her plagues. True Christians must separate themselves from false religious systems and maintain their loyalty to Jehovah alone.

The Necessity of Organized Worship

While some denominations have produced negative fruitage, this does not negate the need for organized worship. The Bible commands believers to gather together for mutual encouragement and spiritual growth (Hebrews 10:24-25). Unity and doctrinal agreement are essential for the church’s mission and effectiveness (1 Corinthians 1:10).

Jesus commissioned His followers to make disciples of all nations, a task that requires organization and coordination (Matthew 28:19-20). Therefore, true religion must be organized to fulfill these biblical mandates effectively.

The Importance of Love and Obedience

Love for fellow believers and obedience to God’s commandments are fundamental marks of true Christianity. Jesus stated that His disciples would be known by their love for one another (John 13:35). However, this love must be accompanied by a commitment to God’s truth and commandments (Matthew 22:35-38; 1 John 5:3).

Romans 13:8-10 emphasizes the importance of love in fulfilling the law, but true love for God and neighbor involves more than kindness; it requires adherence to biblical teachings and active participation in the Christian community.

The Role of Personal Relationship with God

A personal relationship with God is crucial, but it must be grounded in biblical truth and obedience. Jesus confronted those who believed they had a relationship with God but were mistaken (John 8:41-44). Paul noted that zeal for God must be based on accurate knowledge (Romans 10:2-4).

Regular assembly with fellow believers and adherence to God’s commandments are essential aspects of a genuine relationship with God (Hebrews 10:24-25). Personal Bible reading is commendable, but it should be complemented by participation in the Christian community and adherence to its teachings (Acts 8:26-38).

Identifying the True Religion

To identify the true religion, several key criteria must be examined:

  1. Biblical Foundation: True religion is based on the teachings of the Bible, not human traditions (2 Timothy 3:16-17; Mark 7:7).
  2. Respect for the Bible: Members of the true religion have a deep respect for the Bible and strive to live by its teachings (John 17:17; Matthew 15:1-3).
  3. Faith in Jesus Christ: True faith in Jesus involves recognizing His sacrificial death and current role as heavenly King, and obeying His commands (John 3:36; Matthew 7:21-23).
  4. Genuine Way of Life: True religion is a way of life, not mere ritual. It upholds biblical standards of morality and reflects the fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22-23).
  5. Love Among Members: True Christians are identified by their love for one another, transcending racial and national boundaries (John 13:34-35; Acts 10:34-35).
  6. Spiritual Cleanliness: Members of the true religion strive to be clean in thought, word, and deed, avoiding practices that God hates (1 Corinthians 5:9-13; Ephesians 5:3-5).

By examining these criteria, individuals can discern the true Christian faith and align themselves with a community that faithfully adheres to biblical teachings.

  1. Wow! Great Article. (I am one of C.P.H.’s new authors and I’m proud to be affiliated with them.) With every paragraph in this article describing what a true church is or isn’t, much more could be said if time and space permitted describing what is happening in the 21st century regarding the Church. Traditional Sundays and Church attendance has become a thing of the past for the majority, and many of the mega churches are dancing to the social tune of the culture to raise their numbers. Sad. Jesus said, When I return will I find faith (will I find the true church). He obviously had a glimpse into the 21st century. One bottom line for every church pastor or member who argues about doctrine would be to hear the words of the Apostle Paul who said: I desire to hear nothing from you but Jesus Christ and Him crucified. (paraphrased) I Corinthians 2:2
