What Is the Creator’s Design for Humanity?
God created the first human couple, Adam and Eve, in his image and gave them the mandate to be fruitful and multiply. (Gen. 1:27-28, UASV) The text states that Jehovah God formed man and then created the woman from man’s rib to be a suitable companion and counterpart. (Gen. 2:18-24) These opening chapters of Genesis show that the Creator designed and sanctioned sexual intimacy only within the marriage arrangement between one man and one woman. The original arrangement was clear. Men and women complement one another in every way, physically and emotionally, and the natural union of male and female is capable of producing offspring. This original arrangement reflects the natural order as Jehovah intended.
Humanity’s rebellion brought sin into the world and resulted in imperfection and moral corruption. (Gen. 3:1-6; Rom. 5:12) Over time, as humans moved away from Jehovah, a wide array of inappropriate sexual desires developed. These included not only adultery, fornication, and other illicit heterosexual conduct, but also same-sex relations. Sexual immorality arose as humans drifted from their Creator’s standards. Jehovah God never intended for humans to choose their own moral paths independently of him. Imperfection brought about skewed thinking, including sexual desires contrary to the Creator’s design.
Homosexuality existed in the ancient world. Sodom and Gomorrah serve as historical examples of a population given over to sexual immorality, which included men lusting for men. (Gen. 19:4-11; Jude 7) The Scriptures consistently portray such acts as morally reprehensible. This includes the sexual conduct practiced by the inhabitants of Canaan, who became so degraded that God eventually brought judgment upon them. (Gen. 15:16; Lev. 18:22-30; Deut. 9:4-5) The Canaanite nations embraced all manner of sexual perversities, including homosexual acts, in defiance of the Creator’s will.
The moral code revealed in the Hebrew Scriptures is never shown as temporary or arbitrary. Jehovah gave the Mosaic Law to a specific people, Israel, at a specific time in history (1513 B.C.E.), to guide and protect them. The moral laws contained therein reflect Jehovah’s righteous standards and are timeless principles. Some ceremonial and civil aspects of the Law were fulfilled and thus removed when the Messiah came. (Rom. 10:4; Gal. 3:24-25) However, the underlying moral principles remain. This includes the condemnation of homosexual behavior. It is unreasonable to think that homosexuality was condemned only for ancient Israel. The divine principles embodied in the Law, especially those related to sexual morality, reflect Jehovah’s unchanging nature and his design for humanity.
The Mosaic Law and Homosexual Conduct
The Mosaic Law singled out homosexual acts as a grave sin. (Lev. 18:22; 20:13, UASV) The Law described it as an abomination, something detestable. Such prohibition cannot be dismissed as part of ceremonial regulations that ended with the coming of the Messiah. The Law’s moral directives were founded on God’s eternal standards of right and wrong. Even if some argue that these verses are not binding on Christians today, the underlying principle is unalterable. The apostle Paul shows that the moral laws from the Hebrew Scriptures remain in force for Christians, now explained more fully by the teachings of Christ and his disciples. (Rom. 13:8-10; Gal. 5:19-21) Moral values have not changed because God does not change. (Mal. 3:6)
Someone might claim that certain texts, like Leviticus, merely forbid homosexual rituals in idol worship. However, there is no scriptural evidence that the condemnation was limited to specific cultic practices. The text itself places homosexuality in the context of sexual immorality as a whole, alongside incest, adultery, and bestiality. The prohibition is absolute. The prophets and later inspired writers repeatedly affirm that God condemns sexual sins of all kinds. Those who engaged in such conduct were worthy of divine judgment. This moral view did not expire with the Law’s ceremonial aspects. The principles behind the Law remain unchanged.
The Historical Examples and Their Meaning
The account of Noah and Canaan provides insight. Genesis 9:18-28 recounts something shameful that Ham’s son, Canaan, committed against Noah. This wicked act involved moral perversion and dishonor. Noah prophetically cursed Canaan and his descendants. Centuries later, the Canaanites became infamous for deplorable sexual sins, including same-sex acts. Jehovah permitted Israel to remove these nations from the land, showing that the moral principles regarding human sexuality remain constant. This demonstrates that God hates sexual perversion whether practiced by Israelites or non-Israelites, by ancient peoples or by future generations.
The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah stands as a permanent memorial of God’s view of sexual immorality, including homosexual acts. (Gen. 19:4-29; Jude 7) The men of Sodom displayed unnatural lust. This behavior was not limited to a momentary lapse. It was ingrained, and the city’s name became synonymous with immoral sexual behavior. The book of Jude underscores that Sodom and Gomorrah’s practice of going after “other flesh” was unnatural and deserved divine condemnation. Jude’s inspired words were written many centuries later, showing that God’s view had not changed.
Attempts to reinterpret the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah as merely lack of hospitality fail when considering the entire testimony of Scripture. The text explicitly mentions the men’s desire for homosexual acts. The idea that it was only about rape or inhospitality is refuted by the context and subsequent references to the city’s moral degradation. (2 Pet. 2:6-10; Jude 7) The moral lesson remains timeless and universal. The fundamental sin was sexual perversion that contradicted the Creator’s design.
Does Jesus’ Silence Imply Approval of Homosexuality?
Those who claim that Jesus never directly condemned homosexuality are overlooking Christ’s own words that clearly reaffirmed the creation account. Jesus pointed back to God’s original arrangement—one man and one woman in a permanent, exclusive marital union. (Matt. 19:3-9; Mark 10:2-12) By endorsing the marriage covenant established in Eden, Jesus implicitly ruled out all other forms of sexual relations. He never needed to list every immoral sexual act. His audience, which was Jewish, knew the Mosaic Law’s position. Jesus’ silence on specific acts cannot be twisted into approval, since he clearly upheld the moral law and its principles.
The Christian congregation after Pentecost included many Gentiles who had never been under the Mosaic Law. Among them, sexual sins were common, and so it became necessary for the inspired writers, especially Paul, to spell out what was sinful. Homosexual acts were unequivocally included. As the Christian faith spread into pagan territories, individuals who had practiced homosexuality could repent and abandon their former ways. Some were doing so. (1 Cor. 6:9-11) Their transformation confirmed that the Christian faith demanded and enabled moral purification. Thus, there is no ambiguity in the New Testament’s position.
The New Testament’s Clear Condemnation of Homosexual Acts
The apostle Paul addressed homosexuality explicitly, recognizing it as a perversion of God’s natural order. At Romans 1:26-27, under inspiration, Paul describes both male and female homosexual acts as “contrary to nature.” Paul reasoned from creation. Instead of using the common Greek words for “man” and “woman,” he chose words that reflect the male-female distinction established at creation. He aligned his reasoning with Genesis 1:27, emphasizing that God made humans male and female. To exchange natural relations for unnatural ones violates the order the Creator established. Such conduct represented a rejection of God’s revealed will and a debased inclination.
Paul does not mention only one type of homosexual practice. He condemns all homosexual acts. This was consistent with Jewish moral tradition, which universally denounced such behavior. Paul’s words in 1 Corinthians 6:9 and 1 Timothy 1:10 make it plain that homosexual acts are part of the immoral behavior that bars one from God’s Kingdom. The Greek terms used show that both the passive and active partners in homosexual acts are morally guilty. Attempts to limit Paul’s prohibition only to exploitative or cultic forms of homosexuality fail in the face of the plain meaning of his words. The Bible does not present homosexual behavior as a mere cultural taboo. It is portrayed as a violation of the Creator’s moral order.
Is There a Genetic Predisposition Toward Homosexuality?
Whether same-sex desires originate from genetic, environmental, or personal factors does not alter the biblical view. Scripture teaches that all humans are born sinners and that imperfection has distorted human desires in many ways. (Rom. 3:23; 5:12) Some may lean strongly toward certain sins, including homosexuality. Others may struggle with anger, gluttony, or heterosexual immorality. Yet Scripture does not excuse sinful behavior on the grounds of inclination. The fact that one “feels” inclined toward a sin does not remove responsibility. The Bible frequently exhorts believers to put to death improper desires, to fight against sinful inclinations, and to strive for holiness. (Rom. 8:13; Col. 3:5)
God’s moral standards do not change to accommodate human imperfections. He does not adjust his ethical demands because someone finds them difficult. The command to abstain from sexual immorality, which includes homosexual acts, stands firm. (1 Thess. 4:3-5) Eternal life hinges upon obedience to God’s will. (1 John 2:15-17) Jehovah God understands human weakness and grants the needed help through his Spirit-inspired Word. Individuals can be renewed in their minds, reorienting their thinking and behavior in harmony with Scripture. (Eph. 4:22-24; Rom. 12:2) There is hope for those who repent and seek to do God’s will, turning away from what He condemns. He will strengthen their resolve.
Does the Bible Permit Hatred of Those With Same-Sex Attraction?
Never. God’s Word condemns hatefulness. (1 John 4:20-21) Those who reject homosexual acts must maintain a dignified and respectful attitude toward all people. The Bible enjoins believers to treat everyone with kindness and dignity, to be peacemakers, and to show love toward their neighbors. (Matt. 7:12; 1 Pet. 2:17) Condemning sin does not mean despising the sinner. True Christian love seeks the highest good of others, which includes encouraging them to turn to God’s righteous standards.
A Christian who has struggled with same-sex attraction can and should remain chaste, just as an unmarried heterosexual Christian is obliged to remain chaste. Overcoming any sinful tendency requires effort, prayer, and a firm reliance on the Scriptures. The believer does not cultivate hatred or harbor contempt. Rather, the believer focuses on loving God and neighbor, while keeping the Creator’s standards intact. If a person living in a homosexual lifestyle expresses a desire to serve God, the biblical response is clear: repent, abandon any practice God condemns, and seek alignment with Scripture. Just as with any other sin, God’s forgiveness and help are available upon genuine repentance.
Homosexuality in Light of God’s Purpose for the Future
Those who persevere in God’s righteous way now have the hope of eternal life. (John 3:16) During this temporary imperfect state, some may have to fight continuously against urges they know are wrong. Others overcome them to a greater or lesser degree. All believers must work to renew their minds by filling them with Scripture and by seeking God’s wisdom. The Bible promises that God will complete his purpose and rid humanity of imperfection. In the future, under the Kingdom, obedient humans will be restored to moral and physical perfection. (Rev. 21:3-4) At that time, all unnatural and sinful inclinations will be gone. The conflict between fallen flesh and righteous standards will end.
God designed the earth to be inhabited by righteous mankind, and he has not changed his mind. (Isa. 45:18) He has allowed humans for a time to go their own way, to show the consequences of rejecting him. Sexual sins, including homosexuality, are part of that dark chapter of human history. The Bible’s view is that true freedom and fulfillment come from conforming to God’s will. Homosexual conduct is not an “alternative lifestyle” approved by God. It is a departure from his perfect arrangement. The faithful Christian recognizes that, in the end, only the Creator’s view matters.
Can Those Who Practice Homosexuality Change?
Yes. The apostle Paul wrote to the Corinthian congregation, which included former homosexuals who had been washed clean. (1 Cor. 6:9-11) They showed that with God’s help and the guidance of Scripture, one can leave behind sinful practices. Jesus’ ransom sacrifice atones for sin, and the Holy Scriptures provide the instruction needed to renew the mind. Even deeply ingrained habits can be overcome. The believer must pray earnestly, study the Scriptures daily, seek out strong Christian counsel, and avoid associations or influences that promote immoral behavior. Those who truly desire to please God can resist sinful urges. Jehovah’s standards never lead to frustration. They offer a path to moral cleanliness and peace.
The Bible’s stance that homosexuality is sinful does not arise from ignorance or cultural biases. It is grounded in the truth of creation. Jehovah intended marriage for a man and a woman who together reflect his image and can procreate. When humans choose to deviate from this plan, they do so at their spiritual peril. God’s laws protect human dignity and promote genuine happiness. Any who struggle with same-sex attraction can trust the Scriptures. The moral code remains absolute. God is always right, and his laws are always beneficial.
Conclusion
The Bible’s teaching on homosexuality is unambiguous. Homosexual acts are portrayed as a serious violation of divine law, contrary to the nature Jehovah established at creation. Neither the Old nor the New Testament ever presents homosexual behavior as acceptable. The original arrangement was one man and one woman, joined in a lifelong union. This sacred institution is the only setting for permissible sexual relations. The Creator’s standards have not altered. Jesus reaffirmed the Edenic model, and the apostles upheld it.
Romans chapter 1, along with 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 and 1 Timothy 1:10, demonstrates beyond doubt that homosexual acts were never acceptable. Such conduct arose after sin corrupted humanity. Some may claim modern knowledge supersedes the Bible’s view, but God’s Word remains the ultimate authority. The Creator knows what is best for humans. Obedience leads to blessings and eternal life. Disobedience leads to death. The Christian message offers redemption, not accommodation. Those who respond by turning from sinful behavior, including homosexual conduct, can find true freedom and peace with Jehovah. The Bible’s moral code stands firm forever.
