This question has stoked controversy among conservative Christians in recent times, but it has proved to be of little interest to theistic evolutionists (those who accept evolution as God’s mechanism in creation) and those rejecting Genesis as God’s inerrant Word. The debate has been primarily between young-and old-earth creationists.
The scientific evidence for creation is found in three different areas. First, there is the scientific evidence for the creation of the physical universe. Second, there is the scientific evidence for the creation of first life. Third, there is the scientific evidence for the creation of all basic life forms, including human beings.
There are two major views with regard to the time involved in Creation: the old earth view and the young-earth view. The latter believes the universe is no more than approximately 15,000 years old, while the former holds that it is probably about 15,000,000,000 years old.
There seems to be no way to actually prove how old the universe really is, either from science or from the Bible, for there are known and possible gaps in the biblical genealogies (see below). In addition, there are unprovable presuppositions in most, if not all, the scientific arguments for an old earth (see below); that is, an earth of millions or billions of years is biblically possible but not absolutely provable.
The creation account of how the universe came to exist is exciting for most people. It almost appears as though humanity was designed to seek out answers to gain an understanding of the unknown. There is an ever-present curiosity that drives us to seek out our origins.
