2011 was the year of the 400th anniversary of the King James Version of the Bible, otherwise known as the Authorized Version. The English-speaking world was in full celebration. There were television and radio specials, documentaries, as well as conferences, lectures, and seminars. King James I of England produced the translation that is noted for its “majesty of style,” and has been labeled as one of the most important books in the English history and a driving force that shaped the English-speaking world.
The King James Bible was originally published in 1611. Some have estimated that the number of copies of the King James Version that have been produced in print worldwide is over one billion! Exactly why are we making other translations beyond the King James Version of 1611? The King James Version has been the primary translation of the Christian community for 400 years (1611-2011). There is no doubt that this Bible alone has affected the lives of hundreds of millions and has influenced the principles of Bible translation for the past four centuries. So, why would we ever need another Bible other than the King James Version?
The King James Version has reached the milestone of the 400th anniversary of its first publication. Academic and religious conferences, museum displays, books and articles, and commemorative editions of the KJV have exploded in such quantity that 2011 can confidently be declared the year of the King James Bible.
