The Bible does not leave us with fear. It gives us hope.

Many people are afraid of death. Others are afraid of hellfire. Some worry about loved ones who have died. They wonder where they are and whether they are suffering.

The Bible gives a clear answer.

The dead are not suffering. They are not conscious. They are resting in death, waiting for resurrection.

Ecclesiastes 9:5 says, “The dead know nothing.”

That truth removes fear. Jehovah is not torturing the dead. He remembers them.

The Hope Is Resurrection

Resurrection (being brought back to life) is the Bible’s real hope for the dead.

Jesus said at John 5:28-29 that those in the tombs will hear His voice and come out.

This means the dead are not forgotten. They are not beyond Jehovah’s power. Jesus Christ can call them back to life.

Death is powerful, but it is not stronger than God.

Jesus Proved the Resurrection Is Real

Jesus Himself was resurrected.

He died, was buried, and was in Hades (the common grave of mankind). But Jehovah did not leave Him there.

Acts 2:31 says that Jesus “was not abandoned to Hades.”

Jehovah raised Jesus from the dead. That resurrection proves that God can raise others too.

Because Jesus lives, the hope of resurrection is sure.

Death Will Be Destroyed

The Bible calls death an enemy.

First Corinthians 15:26 says, “The last enemy to be destroyed is death.”

Death will not rule forever. Hades (the common grave of mankind) will give up the dead. Then death and Hades will be destroyed.

Revelation 20:14 says death and Hades are thrown into the Lake of Fire (the second death, or final destruction).

That means the common grave will come to an end.

Eternal Life Is God’s Gift

The Bible does not teach that humans naturally live forever. Eternal life is a gift.

Romans 6:23 says, “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Those who love Jehovah, trust in Jesus Christ, and walk in obedience can receive everlasting life.

This life is not earned by human pride. It is God’s gift through Christ.

A Future Without Pain and Death

Revelation 21:4 gives one of the most beautiful promises in Scripture. It says that death will be no more. It also says mourning, crying, and pain will be gone.

Think about that future.

No more death.

No more graves.

No more funerals.

No more fear of losing loved ones.

No more wickedness hurting people.

Jehovah’s purpose is life, peace, and righteousness.

Final Destruction Removes Evil

Gehenna (a symbol of complete destruction) and the Lake of Fire (the second death) show that evil will not last forever.

Jehovah will remove wickedness completely.

Satan will be destroyed. His demons will be judged. Wicked humans who refuse to repent will not be allowed to ruin God’s creation forever.

This is not cruelty. It is justice.

A loving God must remove evil so righteous people can live in peace.

We Do Not Need to Fear Hellfire

The Bible does not teach eternal torment.

Sheol (the common grave of mankind) and Hades (the Greek word for the common grave) are not places of fire.

Gehenna pictures complete destruction.

Tartarus (a condition of restraint for wicked angels) does not apply to dead humans.

The Lake of Fire means the second death.

When we understand these words, fear is replaced with truth.

Jehovah is not cruel. He is righteous, loving, and just.

The Bible Helps Us Trust Jehovah

Some teachings make God seem harsh and frightening. But the Bible shows us Jehovah’s true character.

He does not enjoy death.

Ezekiel 33:11 says He takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. He wants people to turn back and live.

That is why He sent Jesus.

John 3:16 says that those believing in Jesus should not perish but have eternal life.

The choice is clear: perish or live.

The hope is clear: life through Christ.

What Should We Do With This Hope?

This hope should move us to faith and obedience.

We should listen to Jehovah’s Word.

We should follow Jesus Christ.

We should repent of sin.

We should teach others the truth.

Many people are afraid because they have been taught wrong ideas about hell. They need to hear what the Bible really says.

The truth can comfort them.

The truth can help them love Jehovah instead of fearing false teachings about Him.

What We Learned

The Bible gives hope, not terror. The dead are unconscious and await resurrection. Jesus Christ has authority to raise the dead.

Sheol and Hades refer to the common grave. Gehenna and the Lake of Fire picture final destruction. Tartarus refers to wicked angels under restraint.

Jehovah will destroy death, remove evil, and give everlasting life through Jesus Christ to those who faithfully follow Him.
