The Lake of Fire (a symbol of the second death) is one of the most misunderstood expressions in the Bible. Many people hear the words “lake of fire” and immediately think of a place where people suffer forever.

But is that what the Bible actually teaches?

The best way to understand the Lake of Fire is to let the Bible explain it. Thankfully, the Bible does exactly that.

Revelation 20:14 says, “This is the second death, the lake of fire.”

The Bible does not leave us guessing. It clearly tells us what the Lake of Fire means. It means the second death.

To understand the Lake of Fire, we first need to understand what the second death is.

What Is the Second Death?

The first death is the death that all humans experience because of sin.

Romans 5:12 says that sin entered the world through Adam, and death spread to all people.

Every person dies because we are descendants of Adam.

However, the Bible teaches that many who die will be resurrected. Jesus promised that those in the memorial tombs will hear His voice and come out. (John 5:28-29)

This means the first death is not always permanent.

The second death is different.

The second death is final. It is permanent. There is no resurrection from it.

That is why the Lake of Fire is so serious. It represents complete and everlasting destruction.

The Lake of Fire Is a Symbol

The book of Revelation contains many symbols. It speaks about beasts, dragons, horns, crowns, stars, and other symbolic pictures.

The Lake of Fire is also a symbol.

We know this because Revelation says things are thrown into it that cannot literally burn.

For example, Revelation 20:14 says that death and Hades (the common grave of mankind) are thrown into the Lake of Fire.

Death is not a person. Hades is not a physical object. Neither can be burned by literal flames.

This shows that the Lake of Fire is symbolic.

It represents the complete end of whatever is thrown into it.

The Lake of Fire Is Not Hades

Earlier we learned that Hades (the Greek word for the common grave of mankind) is the grave.

People can be resurrected from Hades.

Revelation 20:13 says that Hades gives up the dead who are in it.

The Lake of Fire is different.

The Lake of Fire is not the grave. It is the second death.

Hades is temporary.

The Lake of Fire is final.

In fact, Revelation 20:14 says that Hades itself is thrown into the Lake of Fire. This means the grave will one day come to an end.

There will be no more death and no more need for the grave.

The Lake of Fire Is Not Eternal Torment

Many people believe the Lake of Fire is a place where wicked people remain alive forever while suffering.

But that is not what the Bible says.

The Bible repeatedly teaches that the punishment for sin is death.

Romans 6:23 says, “For the wages of sin is death.”

It does not say the wages of sin is eternal torment.

Notice also what Jesus said in John 3:16. Those who believe in Him receive everlasting life. Those who reject Him perish.

The contrast is simple.

Life versus destruction.

Life versus death.

The Bible never says the wicked receive eternal life in suffering.

Fire Often Pictures Destruction

Throughout the Bible, fire is often used as a symbol of judgment and destruction.

Consider Sodom and Gomorrah. Those cities were destroyed by fire from heaven.

They are not still burning today.

The fire accomplished its purpose. It destroyed them.

Jude 7 refers to their destruction as an example.

The result was permanent.

Likewise, the Lake of Fire pictures a destruction that is complete and final.

Who Is Thrown Into the Lake of Fire?

The Bible says several things are thrown into the Lake of Fire.

Revelation 20:10 says the Devil is thrown into the Lake of Fire.

Revelation 19:20 says the beast and the false prophet are thrown into it.

Revelation 20:14 says death and Hades are thrown into it.

Revelation 20:15 says those not found in the book of life are thrown into it.

The common idea in all these examples is complete removal.

The Lake of Fire represents the final end of everything that opposes Jehovah and His purpose.

What About the Devil?

Some people ask whether the Devil will suffer forever in the Lake of Fire.

The Bible teaches that the Devil will be destroyed.

Hebrews 2:14 says that Jesus came to “destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the Devil.”

Destroy means destroy.

The Bible never says Satan will rule over hell. That idea comes from human traditions and stories, not from Scripture.

The Devil is not the ruler of the Lake of Fire. He is one of those judged by it.

His future is destruction.

The Lake of Fire Means the End of Evil

One reason the Lake of Fire is good news is that it shows evil will not continue forever.

Jehovah will not allow wickedness to exist for all eternity.

One day, Satan will be gone.

Death will be gone.

Suffering will be gone.

Pain will be gone.

Rebellion against God will be gone.

The Lake of Fire pictures the complete removal of everything that harms God’s creation.

The Lake of Fire Shows God’s Justice

Jehovah is loving, but He is also just.

He gives people the opportunity to repent.

He sent His Son to die for sinners.

He patiently allows time for people to turn to Him.

But He will not force people to obey Him forever.

Those who completely reject His rule face judgment.

That judgment is not endless torture.

It is destruction.

This is fair and just.

The Bible teaches that Jehovah takes no pleasure in the death of the wicked. He wants people to repent and live. (Ezekiel 33:11)

The Lake of Fire does not show a cruel God. It shows a just God who will finally remove evil forever.

A Future Without Death

One of the most beautiful promises in the Bible is found in Revelation 21:4.

It says that death will be no more.

Think about what that means.

No more funerals.

No more cemeteries.

No more grieving over lost loved ones.

No more fear of death.

Because the Lake of Fire destroys death itself, death will never return.

Jehovah’s purpose for life and happiness will be fully accomplished.

What We Learned

The Lake of Fire is a symbol of the second death. The Bible clearly defines it this way in Revelation 20:14. It is not a place of eternal torment.

The Lake of Fire represents complete and final destruction. It is different from Hades, which is the common grave. Hades gives up the dead, but the second death is permanent.

The Lake of Fire shows that Jehovah will remove evil, destroy death, and bring about a future filled with righteousness and peace.
