Daily Devotional on Romans 12:9 — Genuine Love in a Corrupt World

Romans 12 marks a decisive transition in Paul’s letter, moving from doctrinal foundations to practical Christian living. Romans 12:9 states, “Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is wicked; cling to what is good.” This verse defines the moral framework for Christian conduct and exposes the incompatibility between genuine love and moral compromise. Paul does not redefine love according to cultural sentiment; he anchors it firmly in moral truth.

The command for love to be “without hypocrisy” means that Christian love must be sincere, unfeigned, and consistent with God’s standards. The Greek term indicates something not worn as a mask. Love is not mere kindness or tolerance; it is a commitment to what Jehovah defines as good. Jesus demonstrated this perfectly by loving people while never excusing sin. Hypocritical love claims acceptance while refusing to confront wickedness, but such love is foreign to Scripture.

Paul immediately connects sincere love with moral discernment. To “abhor what is wicked” requires more than avoidance; it demands moral revulsion shaped by Scripture. Wickedness is not determined by social consensus but by Jehovah’s revealed will. Psalm 97:10 declares that those who love Jehovah must hate what is bad, showing that love for God and hatred for evil are inseparable. Christian love that tolerates wickedness ceases to be love at all.

The instruction to “cling to what is good” mirrors the language of attachment used elsewhere in Scripture. Christians are not merely to approve of goodness but to attach themselves to it with resolve. What is “good” is defined by God’s Word, not by human preference. This clinging requires discipline, spiritual courage, and resistance to pressure from a world that redefines morality. Galatians 6:9 reinforces this by urging perseverance in doing good despite opposition or fatigue.

Romans 12:9 also guards against emotionalism in Christian living. Love governed by Scripture produces action aligned with truth. Since the Holy Spirit does not indwell believers, transformation comes through the renewing of the mind by God’s Word, as stated earlier in Romans 12:2. Genuine love flows from obedience, not impulse. It reflects Jehovah’s moral nature and advances His purposes rather than human approval.

In a culture that equates love with affirmation of all behavior, Romans 12:9 stands as a corrective. True Christian love is honest, discerning, and anchored in righteousness. It rejects hypocrisy, confronts wickedness, and remains firmly attached to what Jehovah calls good. Such love is demanding, but it is the only love that reflects God’s will and brings lasting spiritual integrity.
