From the dawn of human curiosity, men have gazed at the stars and into the cell alike, searching for the pattern that underlies all existence. The more our understanding of creation grows, the clearer it becomes that life operates according to an extraordinary informational structure. Information theory—originally developed to describe the efficiency of human communication—has proven to be one of the most profound windows into the very fabric of reality. It reveals that life itself is not an accident of chemistry, but a manifestation of encoded, purposeful information. The evidence points not toward chaos, but toward a Designer—Jehovah, the Author of life—Who constructed the cosmos as a vast, coherent, information-bearing system.
Information as the Foundation of Reality
At its core, information theory is the mathematical study of the transmission, processing, and storage of information. It seeks to quantify how messages are structured and how meaning is preserved or lost through channels of communication. But when this framework is applied to biology and cosmology, a startling truth emerges: life is not merely matter; it is organized matter governed by information. This recognition fundamentally alters our understanding of what it means to exist.
In the natural world, information is the defining characteristic that differentiates a living cell from a lump of clay. Both contain similar chemical elements, yet the living cell contains an organized code—the DNA molecule—that specifies the precise arrangement, replication, and function of every part. Without this encoded instruction, no amount of physical substance could spontaneously form into a functioning organism. This is a profound indication that the foundation of life is not physical chemistry alone, but the intelligent structuring of information.

DNA: The Divine Script of Life
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) operates as an unparalleled information system. It stores data in sequences of four nucleotides—adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine—which form codons that represent instructions for assembling proteins. Each protein is built from a specific sequence of amino acids, themselves directed by the codified information in DNA. These instructions are transcribed into RNA and then translated into functional biological components. This process mirrors a linguistic or computational system—complete with syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.
Information theorist Hubert Yockey observed that the genetic code’s informational content is mathematically identical to that of a human language. This recognition is not mere analogy; it is structural identity. DNA utilizes symbols (nucleotides) that correspond to meanings (amino acids) through a decoding mechanism (ribosomes), all following a set of grammatical rules (the genetic code). Such systems are never the product of random processes, but of intelligent design. In every field of communication—from written text to computer code—information always originates from an intelligent source. To deny this in the case of biology is to violate the very principles of information theory itself.

Information Requires a Mind
Information is inherently non-material. It is not the medium itself, but the meaning conveyed through the medium. For instance, the same piece of paper can carry the words “God is Love” or a meaningless scribble. The ink and the fibers are the same, but the arrangement—the encoded meaning—differs entirely. Thus, information is not a property of matter; it is a property of mind. The message always presupposes a messenger.
If we accept this principle as universally valid, then the existence of complex biological information implies a transcendent Mind behind it. The genome is not a product of chance chemistry any more than a sonnet is the product of spilled ink. To suppose otherwise is to suggest that order can emerge from chaos without a directing cause—an idea contrary to both reason and observation. In the words of the Apostle Paul, “For His invisible attributes, namely, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made” (Romans 1:20). Information itself bears witness to Jehovah’s existence and creative intelligence.
The Impossibility of Random Information Generation
One of the most powerful implications of information theory is that random processes cannot generate new functional information. Entropy—the measure of disorder—always increases in closed systems. Without an external source of order, information will degrade over time rather than improve. Mutations may alter existing genetic sequences, but they do not create new coding systems; they corrupt, delete, or shuffle existing ones. For example, when copying errors occur in DNA replication, the result is rarely a gain in function. Instead, it typically leads to dysfunction, disease, or loss of genetic information.
This aligns perfectly with the biblical account of a fallen creation. The original order established by Jehovah was perfect and harmonious. Sin, disobedience, and corruption introduced decay—what Scripture calls the “bondage to corruption” (Romans 8:21). Modern genetics, in recognizing the tendency of information to degrade, unintentionally affirms the biblical narrative: life is running down, not building up through self-generated improvement. This degradation of information over generations is entirely consistent with the curse upon the earth described in Genesis.

The Universe as an Information System
Recent discoveries in physics suggest that the informational character of reality extends beyond biology. The universe itself appears to be structured as a vast information network. Quantum theory demonstrates that particles are not simply material entities but are described by informational states—wave functions that encode probabilities. The laws of physics, too, function as informational constraints: precise, abstract rules that determine how matter and energy behave. Every scientific law is an expression of informational order—a system of encoded relationships governing the cosmos.
Physicist Paul Davies has written that “the universe is not a gigantic machine running like clockwork, but a giant information-processing system.” Yet this description, while profound, is incomplete without identifying the Programmer. To suppose a coded cosmos without a Coder is to describe a symphony without a Composer. The consistency and intelligibility of the universe testify that there is a logical, rational Mind behind it—the same Mind that inspired the order of life itself. Jehovah, through His Word, both created and sustains the universe by the power of His will (Hebrews 1:3).

The Logos and the Algorithm
John 1:1 declares, “In the beginning was the Word (Logos), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” The Greek term Logos means more than “word”; it denotes the reason, logic, or principle that orders all things. When viewed through the lens of information theory, this declaration acquires striking depth. The Logos is the ultimate Source of all information—the divine Algorithm that encodes reality itself. All that exists is structured, sustained, and made intelligible by Him. The patterns written into DNA, the laws governing the stars, and the logic of mathematics all reflect the rational order of the Logos through Whom all things were made.
Thus, information theory does not merely support theism—it illuminates the nature of divine revelation. The Bible, as the inspired Word of God, is not a random collection of human ideas, but the transmitted information of the Creator to humanity. Just as biological information determines the form and function of living beings, divine revelation determines the spiritual and moral structure of human life. “All Scripture is inspired by God and is beneficial for teaching, for reproving, for setting things straight, for disciplining in righteousness” (2 Timothy 3:16). The Word of God is the living code of spiritual reality.

The Limits of Materialistic Explanations
Naturalistic evolution attempts to explain the complexity of life through undirected processes of mutation and selection. Yet these mechanisms operate within the boundaries of existing information; they do not account for its origin. The question is not how life adapts, but how information came to exist in the first place. Information theory draws a sharp line between data and meaning. Random events can generate data, but not meaningful, functional, self-replicating information. Meaning requires intentional design.
Even the simplest cell exhibits information processing systems far beyond the capabilities of any human technology. It contains molecular machines that read, transcribe, and translate genetic code with astonishing precision. Each step depends upon preexisting informational rules and control systems. To argue that these arose by chance is to commit a logical fallacy: the system required to interpret the code cannot exist without the code, and the code cannot function without the system to interpret it. This is an irreducible informational interdependence—evidence of deliberate orchestration by an intelligent Creator.
The Moral and Spiritual Dimension of Information
The presence of information in life also has profound moral implications. If the universe is coded, then its laws are not arbitrary—they are expressions of divine order. Moral truth, therefore, is not relative or constructed by human culture; it is encoded into the moral fabric of creation itself. Just as physical laws govern the cosmos, moral laws govern human behavior. The violation of these laws brings disorder, decay, and death, not by divine caprice, but because it violates the informational design of existence. Sin is, in essence, the corruption of moral information.
Jehovah’s revelation through Scripture restores the corrupted informational link between Creator and creation. In Christ, “the Word became flesh” (John 1:14), bringing perfect alignment between divine information and human life. His teachings decode the meaning of existence, restoring clarity to a world darkened by misinformation and spiritual entropy. The Holy Scriptures, preserved and transmitted through inspired men, are the divine algorithm for human restoration—a perfectly coded message of truth and life.
Eternal Life as Perfect Information
Eternal life is not merely unending existence; it is restored informational harmony with Jehovah. Sin disrupted the original informational integrity of human nature, leading to death—both physical and spiritual. Through Christ’s atoning sacrifice, that corruption is reversed. Resurrection is not the mere reanimation of a body, but the reconstitution of perfect divine information in a redeemed person. The “new creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17) represents the reestablishment of the original code of life—now incorruptible and eternal. The redeemed are, in essence, reprogrammed to reflect the image of the Creator in righteousness and truth (Ephesians 4:24).
The Coded Cosmos and the Witness of Science
When we examine the fine-tuning of the universe—the precise values of physical constants necessary for life—it becomes evident that we inhabit a cosmos designed for intelligibility. From the structure of atoms to the sequence of nucleotides, every level of existence displays purpose, coherence, and informational precision. This is not the mark of randomness, but of rational design. Information theory, far from diminishing the need for God, strengthens it. The laws of information reveal that all meaning, all order, and all life derive from a supreme, personal Intelligence.
Therefore, the “algorithm of life” is not a mechanical process but a reflection of divine wisdom. The cosmos is not self-generating code, but the living, sustaining expression of the Logos. Every biological pattern, mathematical law, and physical constant points toward the same conclusion: “By wisdom Jehovah founded the earth; by understanding He established the heavens” (Proverbs 3:19). Information is not the product of the universe—it is its foundation, because the Mind of God is its Source.
