“For what credit is there if you are beaten for sinning and you endure it? But if you endure suffering because of doing good, this is an agreeable thing to God.”—1 Peter 2:20.

God Does Not Test His People With Evil

The Scriptures make it unmistakably clear that Jehovah God does not send trials, hardships, or calamities as a method of refining or strengthening His people. The very idea that God would orchestrate evil circumstances to mold believers is not only contrary to the Word of God but also slanders His holy nature. James 1:13 leaves no room for misunderstanding: “When under trial, let no one say: ‘I am being tried by God.’ For with evil things God cannot be tried nor does he himself try anyone.” This statement reveals the absolute incompatibility between Jehovah’s holiness and the suggestion that He could ever tempt His people with sin, hardship, or evil.

Lamentations 3:38 reinforces this truth by declaring, “From the mouth of the Most High bad things and what is good do not go forth.” Jehovah is the Source of all goodness and righteousness, and He cannot be the Author of calamity designed to damage, discourage, or entrap His faithful servants. The God of the Bible is consistent in character, being described as “righteous in all his ways” (Psalm 145:17) and “a God of faithfulness who is never unjust” (Deuteronomy 32:4). It is blasphemous to claim that He engineers suffering to test His children, when His Word directly attributes suffering to human imperfection, Satanic activity, and the broken world system.

The Real Source of Hardship: Human Imperfection and Free Will

The true origin of suffering in this world is found in mankind’s fallen condition and the misuse of free will. Genesis 6:5 gives a sobering description of humanity’s sinful state: “The inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.” Likewise, Jeremiah 17:9 exposes the treacherous nature of the heart: “The heart is more deceitful than anything else and is desperately sick.” Because mankind is imperfect, individuals often make choices that result in painful consequences.

James 1:14-15 explains the process with piercing clarity: “Each one is tried by being drawn out and enticed by his own desire. Then the desire, when it has become fertile, gives birth to sin; in turn, sin, when it has been accomplished, brings forth death.” In other words, sin arises from within the human heart, not from Jehovah. Suffering follows sin, and this chain reaction is the real source of most human calamities.

Furthermore, Jehovah has granted every individual free will, and that freedom is frequently abused. When people use their God-given liberty to rebel against Him or harm others, the result is often hardship and loss. Thus, when difficulties arise, they are not orchestrated by God but flow from human imperfection and moral corruption, compounded by the influence of Satan and his demons, who actively seek to undermine faith and integrity.

Jehovah Permits, But Does Not Cause, Hardship

Though Jehovah never causes evil, He does permit it temporarily within the framework of human freedom and His overarching purposes. To say that God permits something is not to say that He authors it. Just as a government may permit free speech without endorsing every harmful word spoken, so Jehovah allows humans to act freely, while holding them accountable for their decisions.

Jehovah’s permission is linked to His greater purpose of vindicating His sovereignty before the universe. Since Adam and Eve’s rebellion in Eden, mankind has lived apart from God’s direct rule, attempting to govern independently. The resulting chaos—wars, oppression, poverty, and injustice—testifies to the futility of rejecting Jehovah’s kingship. By allowing time for this experiment in self-rule, God demonstrates once and for all that mankind cannot bring peace, justice, or security apart from Him.

God’s Foreknowledge and Human Freedom

A common misunderstanding is that if Jehovah foreknows events, He must therefore be the Cause of them. This is a distortion of biblical teaching. God’s omniscience allows Him to know what will happen without determining the choices that free moral agents make. His foreknowledge is like a barometer that predicts a storm without creating it.

Jehovah’s knowledge of the future does not override human freedom. He sees the outcome of choices without forcing those choices. In this way, God can foreknow events such as the betrayal of Judas or the suffering of the early church, yet remain blameless of any wrongdoing because He neither caused nor compelled the decisions that brought them about. Humans remain fully responsible for their sins and their consequences.

The Role of Endurance in Christian Living

Though Jehovah does not cause hardships, He does use the endurance of His people under hardship as a means of glorifying His Name. The apostle Peter exhorted Christians in 1 Peter 2:20 to endure suffering patiently when it comes as a result of doing good, because this endurance is “agreeable to God.” Such endurance does not imply that Jehovah authored the suffering; rather, it shows that the believer’s faith remains steadfast despite the hostile world.

Christ Himself set the ultimate example. He endured hostility, rejection, and execution—not because God tested Him with evil, but because Satan and sinful men opposed Him. Through His endurance, Jesus glorified Jehovah and provided a model for His disciples to follow. When Christians endure life’s difficulties faithfully, they bear witness to the power of God’s Word and the reality of His sustaining strength.

The Misinterpretation of Romans 8:28

Romans 8:28 is often misused to suggest that God arranges every event in life, including tragedies, for the believer’s good. The passage states: “We know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.” This verse must be read in light of God’s larger redemptive plan.

The good spoken of in this verse is not a guarantee of immediate deliverance from difficulties, nor does it imply that God engineers suffering for hidden benefits. Rather, it refers to the assurance that everything occurring in the life of a faithful believer ultimately serves God’s long-term purposes of salvation, sanctification, and eternal blessing. The Christian hope is rooted not in the expectation of miraculous rescues from daily troubles but in the promised restoration through Christ’s Kingdom, when sin and death will be permanently removed.

The Purpose of Present Difficulties

Jehovah permits His people to live in the same world of suffering as all others, not because He wills their pain, but because their endurance provides a powerful testimony. The faithful believer’s life becomes a living witness to the sufficiency of God’s Word, the strength of faith, and the certainty of His promises. By refusing to compromise under pressure, Christians reveal that loyalty to Jehovah is not dependent upon circumstances but is grounded in truth and love for Him.

Just as Daniel in Babylon and Joseph in Egypt endured unjust suffering, yet remained faithful, so Christians today glorify Jehovah through steadfastness. These biblical examples do not prove that God sends suffering to refine His people, but rather that He sustains them when they face it. The endurance of the faithful provides an answer to Satan’s challenge that humans serve God only for selfish reasons.
