GODLY WISDOM SPEAKS Wives_02 HUSBANDS - Love Your Wives

Daily Devotional on Proverbs 31:10

“A capable wife who can find? She is far more precious than jewels.”Proverbs 31:10, UASV

The closing chapter of Proverbs is a fitting conclusion to a book centered on wisdom. It presents not abstract theories but wisdom embodied in daily life, culminating in the portrait of the capable wife. Verse 10 introduces this acrostic poem, establishing her value and rarity. In a world that often devalues biblical womanhood, this verse remains a timeless declaration of the worth of a godly, capable woman whose life is rooted in wisdom and the fear of Jehovah.

The Capable Wife

The Hebrew term translated as “capable” carries the sense of strength, valor, and excellence. This is not mere domestic skill, though that is included, but comprehensive strength of character. It describes a woman who is resourceful, industrious, wise, and faithful. Her worth is not measured in fleeting charm or outward beauty, but in her godly strength and the fruit of her life.

This capacity reflects wisdom in action. From the beginning of Proverbs, wisdom has been personified as a woman calling out to the simple (Prov. 1:20–23). Now, at the book’s close, wisdom is not merely calling but is displayed in the life of a woman who embodies its principles. Thus, the capable wife is not only an encouragement to women but also a living testimony to all believers of how wisdom transforms daily living.

Worth Beyond Riches

“She is far more precious than jewels.” This declaration confronts the natural human tendency to measure value by wealth, possessions, or outward status. Scripture often contrasts fleeting riches with enduring wisdom. Proverbs 3:15 had already declared, “She [wisdom] is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire compares with her.” Here, that same truth is applied to the life of a woman who lives by wisdom.

Jewels, though rare and costly, are ultimately lifeless objects. The capable wife, however, is a living treasure. Her worth cannot be quantified because it flows from her character, her godliness, and her faithful love. Unlike material wealth, which can be lost, stolen, or destroyed, the value of a wise and godly woman endures because it is rooted in Jehovah’s fear and His Word.

The Foundation: The Fear of Jehovah

Though Proverbs 31:10 begins the description of the capable wife, the climax is found in verse 30: “Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears Jehovah is to be praised.” This anchors her worth not in her own achievements but in her reverence for God. Her strength, her wisdom, and her faithfulness flow from her relationship with Jehovah.

This connection underscores that Proverbs is not offering a cultural stereotype or an unreachable ideal, but a Spirit-inspired model of wisdom. The capable wife is precious because she reflects the fear of Jehovah in every sphere of life. Just as wisdom begins with the fear of Jehovah (Prov. 1:7), so her excellence is grounded in it.

Application for Women and Men

For women, this verse affirms the dignity and value of living a godly life according to God’s design. The capable wife is not praised merely for external accomplishments but for the inner strength that flows from her walk with Jehovah. Modern culture often reduces womanhood to shallow standards of appearance, independence, or achievement, yet Scripture elevates the capable wife as more precious than jewels. Her life testifies to what it means to live in godly wisdom.

For men, this verse calls for discernment and gratitude. The rhetorical question, “A capable wife who can find?” underscores the rarity of such a woman. Therefore, a husband blessed with a godly wife must treasure her, honoring her worth and recognizing her as a gift from Jehovah. Proverbs 18:22 affirms, “He who finds a wife finds a good thing and obtains favor from Jehovah.” Thus, this verse challenges men to esteem their wives rightly and not take their godliness for granted.

Spiritual Warfare Perspective

Satan has long sought to undermine God’s design for the family. By distorting the role of women, either through oppression on one hand or through rebellion against biblical order on the other, he attacks the very foundation of God’s creation. Proverbs 31:10 stands as a defense against these distortions, reminding us that a woman’s true worth is not defined by the world’s shifting standards but by her fear of Jehovah and her godly strength.

In a time when the family is under relentless attack, the capable wife is a picture of spiritual resilience. Her wisdom and faith not only bless her household but also resist the schemes of the enemy, who seeks to destroy godly homes. By embodying wisdom, she becomes a testimony of God’s truth and a fortress against spiritual corruption.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

Living Out This Wisdom

Though this verse specifically addresses wives, its principles extend to all believers. Every Christian is called to embody wisdom in daily living, to reflect the fear of Jehovah, and to live with integrity and faithfulness. Just as the capable wife is “more precious than jewels,” so a life lived in wisdom and godliness is of inestimable value in God’s sight.

This verse also calls for daily gratitude. Whether married or single, each believer should give thanks for the godly women God has placed in the church and in families. They are gifts from Jehovah, living testimonies of His grace, and examples of wisdom applied in practical life.

Final Reflection

Proverbs 31:10 is not merely a verse about marriage or domestic life; it is a declaration of the surpassing worth of wisdom embodied in godly living. The capable wife is rare and precious because her life flows from the fear of Jehovah. In a world that undervalues what God esteems, this verse calls believers to treasure godly character above all else and to bless Jehovah for the gift of wisdom displayed in His people.
