Daily Devotional on Luke 2:51
“And he went down with them and came to Nazareth, and he continued subject to them; and his mother treasured up all these sayings in her heart.” — Luke 2:51 (UASV)
Luke 2:51 stands at the close of a remarkable episode in the Gospel record: the twelve-year-old Jesus remaining in the temple at Jerusalem, conversing with teachers of the Law, astonishing them with His understanding and answers. This verse provides us with a window into His humanity, His humility, and His obedience, while at the same time affirming His divinely appointed mission. The verse contains two distinct aspects: Jesus’ submission to Joseph and Mary, and Mary’s continued meditation upon the profound things spoken and experienced concerning her Son.

The Perfect Example of Filial Obedience
At twelve years of age, Jesus was standing on the threshold of Jewish adulthood. In Jewish tradition, the age of twelve marked the beginning of personal responsibility for obedience to the Law. Yet in this passage, we see that though He was fully aware of His unique relationship with Jehovah as His Father—stating just verses earlier, “Did you not know that I must be in the things of my Father?” (Luke 2:49)—He nevertheless “continued subject to them.”
This is a remarkable act of humility. The One destined to rule as King, the very Son of God, willingly placed Himself under the authority of earthly parents. This submission was not begrudging or half-hearted. It was continual, a pattern of life, showing us that obedience to God’s design for the family includes children honoring and submitting to their parents. This was in keeping with the Law itself, which commanded: “Honor your father and your mother” (Exodus 20:12). Jesus, as the perfect Son, fulfilled this commandment without flaw.

Mary Treasured These Sayings in Her Heart
Mary’s reaction is just as instructive. She “treasured up all these sayings in her heart.” This phrase points to deep reflection and meditation. Mary was not fully able to comprehend all that her Son’s words and actions meant, yet she did not dismiss them. Instead, she stored them in her heart, returning to them again and again, contemplating their significance.
Her example reminds us of the necessity of meditating on the Word of God and on the works of God in our lives. We often do not grasp immediately what Jehovah is doing, but like Mary, we must hold fast to His words and providences, treasuring them within us, knowing that in time His purposes will become clearer.

A Model for Christian Living
Jesus’ obedience to His earthly parents, while knowing that His highest allegiance belonged to His heavenly Father, is a model for us today. Christians are called to live in submission to proper authority—whether in the family, in the congregation, or in society—so long as such obedience does not contradict obedience to Jehovah. The apostle Paul later exhorted: “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is well-pleasing in the Lord” (Colossians 3:20). Jesus’ example sanctifies this obedience, showing it is not weakness but godly strength.
For parents, the passage reminds us of the weight of our responsibility. Though Joseph and Mary were imperfect, Jesus submitted to them. Likewise, children entrusted to us are commanded to honor and obey, but we must provide godly guidance, discipline, and love, reflecting the standards of Jehovah.

Spiritual Warfare in the Home
Satan’s strategy often begins with undermining the family. Disobedience, dishonor, and rebellion against parental authority are marks of the last days, as Paul warned in 2 Timothy 3:2. Jesus’ example in Luke 2:51 demonstrates the spiritual safeguard of submission to God-ordained structures. A household where children respect parents and parents lead in righteousness resists the destructive forces of the world and of Satan.
Mary’s meditation also teaches us that treasuring God’s Word fortifies us in spiritual warfare. When challenges arise, the storehouse of Scripture in the heart becomes the shield of faith and the sword of the Spirit. Just as Mary pondered deeply, Christians must daily reflect on God’s Word, so that when trials come, the heart is prepared.

Application for Daily Devotion
Luke 2:51 challenges us in two ways. First, it asks whether we are willing to submit ourselves to proper authority in humility, even when we possess knowledge, wisdom, or status that might tempt us toward independence or pride. Second, it calls us to treasure the words and works of God in our hearts, not letting them slip away through neglect or distraction, but storing them as priceless riches.
When children obey their parents, they reflect the obedience of Christ. When parents guide with love and truth, they mirror Jehovah’s care. When believers meditate on God’s Word, they prepare themselves for victory in the daily battles of faith.
Thus, in one verse, Luke presents both the perfect humanity of Christ and the model response of a faithful believer. Jesus shows us what it means to obey, and Mary shows us what it means to meditate. Together, they point us toward lives marked by humility, faith, and devotion.
