From the very beginning, Jehovah has desired a close relationship with mankind. He created Adam and Eve with the capacity to reflect His image, to enjoy intimate fellowship with Him, and to live in perfect happiness upon the earth. That purpose was interrupted when Satan led humanity into rebellion, yet God’s original intention has never changed. Today, every true Christian is called to live in a way that pleases God, walking in holiness, rejecting the works of darkness, and pursuing the friendship of Jehovah. This article will explore what it means to become God’s friend, how Satan’s challenge directly involves you, what conduct displeases Jehovah, and how you can live in such a way that brings Him glory and delight.

Becoming God’s Friend

To speak of being God’s friend is not casual sentiment but profound truth grounded in Scripture. Abraham was called “Jehovah’s friend” because of his faith and obedience (James 2:23). Friendship with Jehovah is not achieved by ritual, tradition, or mere profession of faith. It is granted to those who earnestly love Him, trust His Word, and walk in obedience. Jesus said: “You are my friends if you do what I command you” (John 15:14). Friendship with God is demonstrated by loyal obedience, not by empty religious forms.

This friendship requires reconciliation. Humanity is alienated from God because of sin, and only through the ransom sacrifice of Jesus Christ can anyone approach Him. As Paul wrote, “God was reconciling the world to himself through Christ” (2 Corinthians 5:19). Accepting Christ’s ransom is the first step in becoming Jehovah’s friend. That acceptance must be evidenced by repentance, baptism, and a life of faithful devotion to His will. Friendship with Jehovah is not superficial—it is characterized by reverence, obedience, and continual reliance on His guidance revealed in Scripture.

To be God’s friend is also to share His views. Amos 3:3 asks, “Can two walk together unless they have agreed to meet?” True friendship with Jehovah requires aligning your thoughts, values, and conduct with His revealed standards. This alignment comes through the renewal of the mind by Scripture (Romans 12:2). As you deepen in knowledge of God’s Word, your heart becomes more attuned to His desires, your decisions reflect His wisdom, and your conduct honors Him.

Satan’s Challenge and Your Involvement

Satan, the adversary of Jehovah, challenges God’s right to rule. In Eden, Satan insinuated that God was withholding something good from Adam and Eve and implied that humans would be better off ruling themselves (Genesis 3:1-5). This was not merely an attack on Adam and Eve—it was a direct challenge to Jehovah’s sovereignty and His right to rule creation. Satan effectively claimed that God’s standards are unreasonable and that humans serve Him only for selfish gain.

The book of Job reveals this challenge more explicitly. Satan accused Job of serving Jehovah only because of the blessings he had received, saying, “Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? … But stretch out your hand and strike everything he has, and he will surely curse you to your face” (Job 1:10-11). Satan’s argument was that humans are incapable of serving God out of love and loyalty. This challenge involves every one of us today. Each Christian, by his or her conduct, answers the question: Do I serve God because of who He is and out of love for Him, or only for what I gain from Him?

When you remain faithful under pressure, resisting temptation, and continuing in obedience even when life is difficult, you are providing evidence before Jehovah, the angels, and Satan himself that God’s sovereignty is righteous and that genuine love for God exists. Your life becomes a testimony that exposes Satan as a liar and proves Jehovah’s way to be right and just.

Conduct That Displeases God

Jehovah has revealed clearly in His Word what conduct displeases Him. The apostle Paul warns, “Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God” (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). These are not cultural opinions but divine standards. To persist in such practices is to walk in darkness, forfeiting friendship with God.

Other forms of conduct also displease Jehovah. Dishonesty, lying, slander, anger without restraint, unforgiveness, and pride all stand contrary to His will (Ephesians 4:25-32; Proverbs 6:16-19). God also hates hypocrisy—when people outwardly appear religious but live unrighteously (Matthew 23:27-28). Those who pretend loyalty while secretly pursuing wickedness cannot be His friends. Likewise, love of the world—pursuing materialism, fame, or worldly pleasure—makes one an enemy of God (James 4:4; 1 John 2:15-17).

Jehovah is holy, and He demands holiness from His people (1 Peter 1:15-16). Therefore, conduct that is contrary to holiness disrupts friendship with Him. The Scriptures consistently warn that those who practice sin, without repentance and change, place themselves under His judgment.

Living in a Way That Pleases God

Living in a way that pleases Jehovah involves much more than avoiding what displeases Him. It requires actively pursuing righteousness, walking in faith, and cultivating a heart that seeks to honor Him in all things. Paul exhorts Christians: “Walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” (Colossians 1:10). Pleasing Jehovah is both a way of thinking and a way of living.

First, it requires faith. Hebrews 11:6 declares, “Without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.” Faith is not blind credulity but trust grounded in the truth of God’s Word. It is demonstrated by obedience. Noah, Abraham, and Moses are remembered in Scripture because their faith moved them to act. Genuine faith leads you to rely on Jehovah’s promises even when circumstances appear discouraging.

Second, pleasing Jehovah requires holiness of conduct. The Christian must cultivate self-control, reject immorality, and walk in integrity. Paul admonished the Thessalonians, “This is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality” (1 Thessalonians 4:3). Living to please Jehovah means guarding your heart, speech, and actions so that they reflect His purity.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

Third, it involves love. Jesus summarized God’s requirements as loving Jehovah with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and loving your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:30-31). Love for God is expressed through obedience to His commands (John 14:15). Love for neighbor is shown by kindness, mercy, forgiveness, and a readiness to share the good news of salvation. Without love, even outward acts of devotion are empty and displeasing to Him (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

Fourth, pleasing Jehovah requires perseverance under opposition. Because Satan continues his challenge, Christians must endure difficulties and pressures from the world without yielding. James 1:12 assures, “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” Remaining faithful, even in adversity, proves your loyalty and honors Jehovah’s sovereignty.

Lastly, to please Jehovah, you must rely on His Word daily. The Scriptures are the inspired guide, equipping you for every good work (2 Timothy 3:16-17). They provide wisdom, correction, encouragement, and strength. Regular study, meditation, and application of Scripture are essential for maintaining a life pleasing to Him. Prayer, too, is vital—drawing near to Jehovah with humility, thanksgiving, and requests for strength to walk in His ways.

Living in a way that pleases God is not burdensome but a source of deep joy and satisfaction. Jesus Himself said, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). The Christian life is one of purpose, direction, and hope. By becoming Jehovah’s friend, rejecting Satan’s lies, avoiding conduct that displeases God, and pursuing a life of holiness and love, you can walk each day with confidence that your life is precious to Him and that you are bringing delight to His heart.
