Daily Devotional: God’s Love Revealed—1 John 4:9

Rooted in 1 John 4:9 – “In this the love of God was revealed among us, that God sent His only Son into the world, so that we might live through Him.”

The Revealed Love of God

John’s epistle, written late in the first century C.E., centers on one paramount truth: “God is love” (1 John 4:8, 16). In this verse, he deepens the revelation of that love—not as a definition, but as a historic act: God sent His only Son. This sending is the clearest and most powerful display of divine affection. It is not abstract or impersonal; it is incarnational, sacrificial, and redemptive.

John emphasizes that this love was “revealed among us”—not hidden in prophetic promises, nor confined to spiritual intuition, but manifested visibly in Jesus. Through His life, death, and resurrection, we experience the love that seeks the lost, bears our sin, and secures eternal life.

1. Love Revealed in Sending Jesus

The Greek verb used here (ἐφανέρωσεν, ephanerōsen — “revealed”) speaks of bringing something into full view. God’s love is not theoretical—it is shown. The sending of Christ (Gk. ἐξέπεμψεν, exepempsen) is not merely imparting a gift, but commissioning His unique Son for a sacred mission. Jesus enters humanity not as a distant deity but as Emmanuel—“God with us” (Matthew 1:23).

This act signifies that the love of God is the primary motive behind redemption. Salvation is not a transaction demanded by a legalistic deity but the outcome of loving Father who gives Himself.

2. “His Only Son” — Unique and Infinite Love

Here is the crux of the gospel: God sent His only Son. The word monogenēs implies uniqueness and exclusivity. Unlike progeny or creation, this Son shares the Father’s divine nature (John 1:1, 14). The sacrifice of such a Son is not ordinary; it testifies to love that is infinitely costly and eternally gracious.

This challenges modern notions of self-help or situational spirituality. This is God’s radical intervention, not advice from a distance. The only Son—fully divine, fully human—was the medium, the message, and the means of salvation.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

3. “That We Might Live Through Him” — Purpose of God’s Love

John emphasizes that the purpose of sending the Son is not condemnation but life. The verb ζῇμεν, zēmen—“to live”—refers to spiritual and eternal life. In Christ, death is reversed, and death’s hold is broken (John 10:10). To live through Him means to trust, abide, and find our existence not in self, but in Jesus.

Life in Christ is comprehensive: it includes forgiveness, sanctification, transformation, hope, and fellowship with the Father. It is present and future. God’s love gives life now and sustains it forever.

Application: Embracing and Reflecting Divine Love

  1. Believe in the Gift of Love
Accept that Christ is God’s love revealed. To reject Him is to reject love itself.

  2. Live in New Identity
If God’s purpose is that we live through Him, then every aspect of our life—thoughts, relationships, decisions—must flow from that identity.

  3. Love Others from the Overflow
1 John 4:11 instructs us: “Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another.” We reflect what we receive. The gospel changes not just our status, but our disposition.

  4. Witness with Assurance
In a world afraid of love’s cost, we proclaim a love that cost God the Son. This is powerful testimony: God Himself gave for us, for our life.

Christ: The Embodiment of Divine Love

Jesus is not only the means of salvation—He is the measure of love. He loved to the end, washing sins in His blood and calling us deeper. His cross is proof, not punishment. His empty grave is promise, not possibility. Through Him, God’s love is known, lived, and shared.

Conclusion: Live in the Light of Revealed Love

1 John 4:9 does more than teach—it beckons. It beckons us to behold love incarnate, receive life through Him, and then reflect that love to every soul we meet. Let your posture be one of awe, your life one of gratitude, and your love one of witness.

God’s love is not a doctrine—it is a Person. May we live through Him, walk in love, and reveal this divine heart to a dark world.
