Introduction: A Religion at War with the Bible

Roman Catholicism presents itself as the one true Church, claiming continuity with the apostles and Christ Himself. However, when its doctrines, practices, and history are measured against the inspired, inerrant Word of God, it becomes unmistakably clear that Roman Catholicism is a false religion. It does not represent biblical Christianity but a syncretistic system that contradicts the gospel, elevates tradition above Scripture, and persecutes those who seek the truth. Over the centuries, the Roman Catholic Church has not only promulgated unbiblical teachings but has also fought violently to suppress access to Scripture, engaged in widespread moral corruption, and maintained a religious empire rooted in coercion and false authority.

This article provides a detailed, scripturally grounded refutation of Roman Catholicism, examining its hostility to Bible translation, persecution of dissenters, long-standing moral scandal, historical conquests, and fundamentally unbiblical doctrines.

THE EVANGELISM HANDBOOK

The Fight Against Bible Translation

From the early Middle Ages through the Reformation, the Roman Catholic Church repeatedly opposed efforts to translate the Bible into the vernacular languages of the people. The Latin Vulgate, a translation by Jerome in the late 4th century, was declared the exclusive version by Church authorities. While Latin became increasingly unintelligible to the general population, the Church forbade access to Scripture in the common tongue.

Scriptural Command vs. Catholic Control

The Bible commands, “These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart… Repeat them to your children” (Deuteronomy 6:6–7). The apostle Paul urged the public reading of Scripture (1 Timothy 4:13) and commended the Bereans who examined the Scriptures daily (Acts 17:11). Roman Catholic leaders, however, placed the Bible out of reach, issuing edicts like the Council of Toulouse (1229), which banned lay possession of vernacular Scripture. Later, the Council of Trent (1545–1563) reaffirmed the Latin Vulgate as the only authorized version.

Persecution of Translators and Believers

Men such as John Wycliffe, who translated the Bible into English in the late 14th century, were labeled heretics. After Wycliffe’s death, the Church ordered his bones exhumed and burned. William Tyndale, translator of the New Testament into English from the original Greek, was strangled and burned at the stake in 1536. His “crime” was giving the people access to the Word of God.

Torturing and Killing Those Who Believed Differently

The Inquisition, launched formally in the 13th century and lasting in various forms into the 19th century, was the Roman Catholic system of judicial torture and execution against those deemed heretics. Anyone who denied transubstantiation, the authority of the Pope, or the veneration of saints was subject to investigation, imprisonment, and often death.

Biblical Opposition to Persecution

Jesus declared, “If anyone hears my words and doesn’t keep them, I do not judge him; for I did not come to judge the world but to save the world” (John 12:47). Nowhere in Scripture is coercion, torture, or execution of dissenters authorized. True followers of Christ proclaim the truth in love, not violence (2 Corinthians 10:3–5).

Historical Record of Atrocities

Roman Catholic tribunals used racks, whips, branding irons, and burning to force confessions. Protestant reformers and Bible believers were arrested, tortured, and burned alive. During the Spanish Inquisition (1478–1834), thousands were killed. In France, the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre of 1572, approved by Pope Gregory XIII, led to the slaughter of tens of thousands of Huguenots (French Protestants).

APOSTOLIC FATHERS Lightfoot

The Pedophilia of Priests for a Thousand Years

One of the darkest and most persistent scandals in Roman Catholic history is the systemic sexual abuse of children by priests. This is not a modern aberration but a documented reality stretching back for centuries.

Moral Decay from Celibate Priesthood

While Scripture affirms marriage for all believers, including church leaders (1 Timothy 3:2; Titus 1:6), the Roman Catholic Church has mandated celibacy for priests since the 12th century. This unscriptural requirement has contributed to widespread sexual perversion and abuse.

Historical Documentation of Abuse

Numerous medieval and early modern records detail moral depravity among the clergy. The Council of Trent, while condemning Protestant doctrine, also acknowledged rampant sexual sin among the priesthood. In recent decades, investigative journalism and official inquiries have uncovered thousands of abuse cases across the globe, with bishops and cardinals engaging in systematic cover-ups.

Jesus’ View of Such Offenders

Christ warned, “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to fall away—it would be better for him if a heavy millstone were hung around his neck and he were drowned in the depths of the sea” (Matthew 18:6). The institutional shielding of abusers and lack of genuine repentance within the Roman system reveals the corruption of a false religious power structure.

Bishops, Cardinals, and Popes with Concubines and Illegitimate Children

Despite the Church’s imposition of celibacy, many of its highest-ranking officials have lived in blatant immorality, maintaining concubines, fathering children, and engaging in political nepotism and corruption.

Historical Scandals of the Papacy

Popes such as Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia) openly maintained mistresses and fathered numerous illegitimate children. He hosted immoral feasts in the Vatican, with papal guards participating in orgies. Pope Innocent VIII (1484–1492) had multiple children before and during his papacy. Bishops and cardinals routinely bought offices (simony), secured positions for their sons, and enriched themselves.

Scriptural Standards Violated

1 Timothy 3:2 commands that overseers be “above reproach, the husband of one wife.” Paul also warns in Titus 1:7 that an overseer must not be “greedy for money” or “immoral.” The persistent, institutionalized disregard of these qualifications by Rome’s leaders demonstrates their disqualification as true shepherds of God’s people.

Roman Catholicism’s Violent Conquests: A Bible in One Hand, a Sword in the Other

When the Catholic conquistadors arrived in South and Central America in the 16th century, they brought with them a distorted gospel and imperial swords. Catholic missionaries, backed by military force, imposed baptism at sword-point and destroyed native cultures while enriching the Spanish and Portuguese crowns.

Forced Conversion and Colonial Exploitation

While Jesus said, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to observe everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20), He never sanctioned forced conversion. True evangelism is carried out through proclamation and persuasion—not violence.

Yet the Catholic Church sanctioned and participated in forced baptisms, destruction of indigenous temples, and the enslavement of native peoples under the guise of Christian missions. Priests acted as agents of the colonial state, and the gospel was distorted into a means of economic and political domination.

Roman Catholicism’s Unbiblical Teachings

Roman Catholic theology is not simply a variant of Christianity; it is a false system based on tradition, papal authority, and sacramental ritual, all of which are incompatible with the gospel revealed in Scripture.

The Pope as the Vicar of Christ

Claim: The Pope is the supreme head of the church, Christ’s vicar on earth.

Scripture: There is no New Testament support for a singular, supreme human leader over the universal church. Christ alone is “the head of the body, the church” (Colossians 1:18). Peter, who Rome claims as the first Pope, was a fellow elder, not a supreme ruler (1 Peter 5:1–4).

Mariolatry and the “Queen of Heaven”

Claim: Mary is co-mediator, co-redemptrix, and sinless.

Scripture: Jesus is the only mediator between God and man (1 Timothy 2:5). Mary was a godly woman, but she confessed her need for a Savior (Luke 1:47). Elevating her to semi-divine status is idolatry.

Prayers to Saints and Purgatory

Claim: Believers should pray to saints and the dead are purified in purgatory.

Scripture: Nowhere does the Bible teach prayer to anyone but God (Matthew 6:9). The dead have no role in intercession (Ecclesiastes 9:5). Purgatory is a fabrication; Jesus declared, “It is finished” (John 19:30), and “There is now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1).

Salvation by Works and Sacraments

Claim: Salvation comes through baptism, Eucharist, confession, and good works.

Scripture: Salvation is by grace through faith, not by works (Ephesians 2:8–9). The gospel is distorted when sacraments replace faith in Christ’s finished work (Galatians 1:6–9).

Transubstantiation and the Mass

Claim: The bread and wine literally become Christ’s body and blood; the Mass is a re-presentation of His sacrifice.

Scripture: Christ’s sacrifice was “once for all” (Hebrews 10:10–14). The Lord’s Supper is a memorial (Luke 22:19), not a re-sacrifice. Teaching otherwise denies the sufficiency of Christ’s atonement.

The Castrati—Mutilation in the Name of Religion

One of the most grotesque and disturbing practices sanctioned by the Roman Catholic Church for centuries was the creation of castrati—young boys who were surgically castrated to preserve their high-pitched voices for use in church choirs and operatic performances. This practice, which flourished especially in the 17th and 18th centuries, reveals the perverse extent to which Catholic authorities were willing to go in the name of liturgical aesthetics and religious tradition.

Historical Background

While the Church publicly condemned castration, it turned a blind eye to the widespread mutilation of boys in order to supply its chapels with idealized voices. The Vatican itself employed castrati in the Sistine Chapel Choir well into the 20th century, long after the practice was outlawed by civil authorities. These boys, often from poor families, were subjected to irreversible physical mutilation before puberty, resulting in lifelong health issues and social alienation.

A Violation of God’s Design

This practice flies in the face of biblical teaching. God created man and woman in His image (Genesis 1:27), and any form of mutilation for religious or ceremonial gain is a direct violation of His design. Deuteronomy 23:1 explicitly forbids such physical mutilation among the covenant community: “No man whose testicles have been crushed or whose penis has been cut off may enter the assembly of the Lord.”

Religious Abuse and Exploitation

Far from being a spiritually noble practice, the use of castrati exposed the Roman system’s obsession with ritual performance over genuine worship. Rather than focusing on the heart of worship in spirit and truth (John 4:24), the Catholic Church prioritized the aesthetic sound of choirs, even at the expense of children’s bodies and futures. The mutilation of young boys for ecclesiastical gain epitomizes the corruption and cruelty embedded in Rome’s religious empire.

This appalling tradition, defended and perpetuated by the highest religious authorities, adds yet another indictment to Rome’s long legacy of abusing power and violating Scripture in the name of religion.

Conclusion: Come Out from Her

Roman Catholicism is not a misunderstood branch of Christianity—it is a counterfeit religion that has rejected biblical authority, distorted the gospel, persecuted the faithful, and covered centuries of moral corruption. As Scripture commands:
“Come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Do not touch any unclean thing, and I will welcome you” (2 Corinthians 6:17).

The true church of Jesus Christ is not built on Rome’s papal throne, but on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Himself as the cornerstone (Ephesians 2:20). Those who seek the truth must reject Rome’s lies, return to the authority of Scripture, and trust in the once-for-all finished work of Jesus Christ alone.
