Among the many proverbs recorded by Solomon, Proverbs 15:23 stands out as a reflection on the power of speech—especially the joy and value of speaking or receiving the right word at the right time. Here, the inspired writer highlights not only the benefit to the hearer but the satisfaction experienced by the speaker: “a person has joy in an apt answer.”

This verse emphasizes the wisdom of using words carefully, and the blessing that flows when truth, counsel, encouragement, or correction is offered precisely when needed. Solomon, writing under divine inspiration during the 10th century B.C.E., repeatedly draws attention to the significance of speech. In a world where rash words can destroy (Proverbs 12:18) and silence can be wise (Proverbs 17:28), this proverb celebrates the opposite: a thoughtful, helpful, and timely reply that brings joy and delight.

The inspired words here are not about clever speech, manipulation, or smooth talk. They describe truthful, wise, and Spirit-governed speech—the kind that builds up and brings clarity. In an age where communication is often reckless, thoughtless, or self-serving, Proverbs 15:23 reminds believers that every word has weight, and when spoken in season, it can bring healing, joy, and spiritual strength.

“A Person Has Joy in an Apt Answer” — The Joy of Wise Speech

The proverb begins with a universal truth: “A person has joy in an apt answer.” The Hebrew word translated “apt” is מַעֲנֶה, maʿăneh, meaning a response, an answer, or a reply, and it carries the connotation of something fitting, appropriate, and relevant.

This is not the joy of speaking a lot or winning an argument, but the deep satisfaction that comes from saying something truly helpful, timely, and wise. It is the fulfillment that arises when we know our words have benefited others, answered a need, or honored God.

This joy is not rooted in self-glorification but in being a faithful steward of speech. The believer who has submitted their tongue to God’s control (James 3:5–10) will find deep gladness in being an instrument of peace, truth, and grace.

We are reminded of Jesus’ words in Matthew 12:36–37:
“But I tell you that for every careless word that people speak, they will give an account of it on the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”

From the beginning of Scripture, words carry weight. God spoke the universe into being (Genesis 1). His Word is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). Jesus Himself is called the Word (λόγος, logos)—the perfect expression of God’s truth and will (John 1:1–14).

Proverbs, more than any other book, emphasizes the moral and spiritual consequences of speech:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” (Proverbs 18:21)
“A gentle answer turns away wrath.” (Proverbs 15:1)
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver.” (Proverbs 25:11)

Thus, the believer must approach every conversation as a stewardship. The goal is not merely to talk, but to edify (Ephesians 4:29), to teach and admonish (Colossians 3:16), and to speak the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

Application: Cultivating Godly Speech in Everyday Life

Proverbs 15:23 encourages believers to become men and women whose words bring joy, clarity, and hope. To do so:

Seek God’s Wisdom Daily — Only those filled with God’s truth can speak it well. Saturate your heart with Scripture so that your mouth reflects it (Luke 6:45).
Listen Carefully Before Speaking — Proverbs 18:13 warns against answering before hearing. Timely words arise from understanding the need.
Pray for Discernment — Ask God for wisdom to know when to speak, what to say, and when to remain silent. James 1:5 promises that He gives generously to those who ask.
