How Are Believers Set Apart from the World?

John 17:16 states, “They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.” This verse, spoken by Jesus during his prayer to Jehovah, emphasizes the distinction between his followers and the world. It teaches that believers must not conform to worldly values but must live according to Jehovah’s truth. This separation is not about physical removal from the world but about being spiritually distinct, guided by divine principles rather than human desires.

The phrase “They are not of the world” highlights the difference between true followers of Jehovah and those who belong to the world system. The “world” (kosmos in Greek) in this context refers not to the physical earth but to the sinful, rebellious system of human society that is opposed to Jehovah’s will. 1 John 2:15-16 warns, “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world.” Those who truly follow Jehovah do not live by the values of selfish ambition, materialism, or moral compromise.

Jesus adds, “Even as I am not of it,” indicating that just as he was separate from the world, his followers must also be distinct. Throughout his ministry, Jesus rejected the corrupt practices of society, choosing instead to live in complete obedience to Jehovah. John 8:23 records his words: “You are from below; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world.” His life was not shaped by the world’s expectations but by Jehovah’s purpose. In the same way, believers must align themselves with Jehovah’s standards rather than worldly influences.

This separation from the world does not mean physical isolation but a different way of living. In John 17:15, Jesus prayed, “My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.” Jehovah’s people are meant to be present in the world as a witness to righteousness, but they must not adopt its sinful ways. Romans 12:2 reinforces this: “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” The call is to live differently, reflecting Jehovah’s holiness rather than the corruption of society.

Being “not of the world” also means enduring opposition. Jesus warned in John 15:18-19, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world.” Those who stand for Jehovah’s truth will often face hostility because their values conflict with the world’s. However, this opposition is a sign that they are truly following Jesus’ example.

Ultimately, John 17:16 teaches that believers are called to be different from the world, living by Jehovah’s truth rather than its corrupt standards. Just as Jesus was separate from the world in his obedience and righteousness, his followers must also live in a way that reflects Jehovah’s holiness. This verse challenges believers to remain faithful, resisting worldly influences while serving as a light in a dark world.
