How Should Believers Defend Their Hope in Jehovah?
1 Peter 3:15 states, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect.” This verse emphasizes the importance of being ready to defend one’s faith, not with hostility or arrogance, but with humility and reverence. It teaches that believers must be knowledgeable about their faith, prepared to explain their hope in Jehovah, and able to do so in a way that reflects Christ’s character.
The first part of the verse, “But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord,” establishes the foundation for a strong defense of faith. The Greek word for “revere” (hagiazó) means to set apart, sanctify, or honor as holy. This means that believers must first acknowledge Christ’s supreme authority in their lives before they can effectively testify about their faith. True faithfulness begins internally—one cannot effectively defend their hope in Jehovah if their heart is not fully devoted to Him. Proverbs 4:23 reinforces this idea: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” A heart firmly anchored in Jehovah’s truth provides the strength to stand firm in the face of opposition.
The next part of the verse states, “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have.” This underscores the necessity of readiness in sharing and defending one’s faith. The Greek word for “answer” (apologia) refers to a reasoned defense, from which we get the term “apologetics.” This does not mean arguing for the sake of argument, but rather being able to explain the basis of one’s faith clearly and logically.
A prime biblical example of this is found in Acts 17:2-3, where Paul reasoned with the Jews in the synagogue, “explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead.” Paul’s defense of the faith was based on Scripture and reasoned discussion. Likewise, believers today must be equipped with knowledge of Jehovah’s Word, able to explain why they believe what they do. This requires diligent study, as 2 Timothy 2:15 instructs: “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.”
However, Peter does not advocate for a harsh or aggressive approach. The last part of the verse states, “But do this with gentleness and respect.” Defending the faith is not about winning arguments but about winning souls. Colossians 4:6 affirms this principle: “Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Even in the face of opposition, believers are called to respond with patience and kindness, demonstrating the love and wisdom that come from Jehovah.
An example of this can be seen in the life of Stephen. In Acts 6:8-10, Stephen defended the faith with wisdom and the power of the Holy Spirit. Even when faced with hostility, he remained composed and focused on truth rather than resorting to anger or personal attacks. His example illustrates how believers should engage in defending their hope—with conviction, wisdom, and humility.
Ultimately, 1 Peter 3:15 teaches that believers must be fully devoted to Jehovah, ready to explain their faith, and able to do so with gentleness and respect. Knowledge alone is not enough—faith must be lived out with integrity, humility, and a Christlike spirit. By preparing their hearts and minds, believers can confidently and lovingly share the hope they have, leading others toward the truth of Jehovah’s Word.
