What Does It Mean to Walk in Obedience to God Each Day?
The life of a Christian is defined by obedience to Jehovah God, a daily commitment to follow His commandments, live according to His will, and honor Him through every action, thought, and decision. Obedience is not a mere external practice but a reflection of a heart that reveres God’s authority and recognizes His wisdom. In a world filled with distractions and competing influences, walking in obedience requires dedication, faith, and a deep understanding of the Scriptures. One lesser-known verse that underscores the significance of daily obedience is found in Ezekiel 18:9: “He follows my statutes and faithfully keeps my laws. That man is righteous; he will surely live, declares the Sovereign Jehovah.” This passage, though less frequently cited, offers profound insights into the nature of obedience and its role in our relationship with God.
The Foundation of Obedience: Knowing God’s Word
Obedience begins with knowledge of God’s Word. Without understanding what God commands, it is impossible to live in accordance with His will. The psalmist expresses this fundamental truth in Psalm 119:11: “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” Internalizing Scripture provides the foundation for moral decisions and ethical conduct. God’s Word, inspired through the Holy Spirit and preserved through the diligent work of faithful scribes, remains the unchanging standard for life.
The importance of knowing God’s Word is further emphasized by the apostle Paul when addressing Timothy in 2 Timothy 3:16-17: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Through study and application of Scripture, believers are equipped to recognize God’s commands and live by them. The Bible is not merely a collection of historical writings but the revealed will of God, providing guidance for every aspect of life.
Obedience as an Expression of Faith
Obedience is not about legalistic adherence to rules but an expression of genuine faith. True faith naturally manifests in obedience, as seen in Abraham’s willingness to follow God’s instructions without hesitation. In Genesis 22:18, Jehovah commends Abraham for his faith-driven obedience: “Through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.” Abraham’s actions demonstrate that faith and obedience are inseparable. It is through trusting God’s wisdom, even when His commands are challenging, that believers show the authenticity of their faith.
Jesus reinforces this principle in John 14:15: “If you love me, keep my commandments.” Love for Christ and obedience to His teachings go hand in hand. This love is not a fleeting emotion but a steadfast commitment to live as He instructed. Jesus’ teachings, recorded by the apostles under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, serve as the cornerstone of Christian conduct. Importantly, the guidance Jesus promised in John 16:13 was directed solely to the apostles, ensuring the accurate transmission of His words rather than promising direct, personal revelation to all believers.
The Role of Obedience in Salvation
Salvation, according to Scripture, is not a one-time event but a continuous journey marked by faith, repentance, baptism, and obedience. Jesus emphasizes the ongoing nature of salvation in Matthew 24:13: “But the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” Perseverance in obedience is essential for salvation; it requires a lifelong commitment to walk according to God’s will.
The necessity of obedience is also highlighted by Peter in Acts 5:32: “We are witnesses of these things, and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey him.” The Holy Spirit’s guidance comes through the Spirit-inspired Word, providing believers with the wisdom needed to remain faithful. Contrary to charismatic teachings, the Holy Spirit does not indwell believers directly but operates through Scripture, guiding those who seek God’s will with humility and diligence.
Obedience During Life’s Difficulties
Walking in obedience becomes particularly challenging during life’s difficulties. Hardships often test a believer’s resolve, yet God’s Word provides reassurance that obedience remains crucial, even in adversity. James 1:12 offers encouragement: “Blessed is the one who perseveres under difficulty because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that Jehovah has promised to those who love him.” These words remind believers that steadfastness in obedience, even when circumstances are painful, leads to eternal reward.
It is essential to clarify, however, that life’s difficulties are not divinely orchestrated tests designed to refine believers. James 1:13 explicitly states: “When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone.” Jehovah does not cause suffering to strengthen faith; rather, He provides the resources and strength needed to endure difficulties and remain obedient.
The Danger of Selective Obedience
Selective obedience—choosing which of God’s commands to follow while disregarding others—undermines the integrity of one’s faith. King Saul’s disobedience illustrates the dangers of this attitude. In 1 Samuel 15:22-23, the prophet Samuel rebukes Saul: “Does Jehovah delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying Jehovah? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams. For rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.” Saul’s partial obedience, rooted in self-interest, ultimately led to his rejection as king. This account serves as a sobering reminder that obedience must be complete and unconditional.
The Daily Practice of Obedience
Obedience is not a sporadic practice but a daily discipline. Jesus teaches this principle in Luke 9:23: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Daily obedience requires self-denial, the willingness to prioritize God’s will above personal desires. This commitment is evident in everyday decisions, from the way believers speak and act to the ethical choices they make in work, family, and community life.
Paul echoes this daily commitment in Romans 12:1-2: “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” A renewed mind, shaped by Scripture, naturally leads to obedience. It requires vigilance against worldly influences that promote self-centeredness and moral compromise.
The Eternal Reward of Obedience
God promises eternal life to those who remain obedient until the end. In Revelation 2:10, Jesus encourages the congregation in Smyrna: “Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you life as your victor’s crown.” The promise of eternal life serves as motivation for daily obedience. This reward is not earned through human merit but granted by God’s grace to those who respond to His love with faithful, obedient lives.
The ultimate expression of obedience is seen in Jesus Christ, who submitted entirely to the Father’s will. Philippians 2:8 describes His obedience: “And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross.” Jesus’ obedience, even in the face of immense suffering, exemplifies the attitude every believer should adopt.
Conclusion
Walking in obedience to God each day is a profound expression of faith, love, and devotion. It requires knowing God’s Word, trusting His wisdom, persevering through life’s difficulties, and maintaining a daily commitment to live according to His commandments. As Ezekiel 18:9 reminds us, the person who follows God’s statutes and keeps His laws faithfully is deemed righteous and assured of life. Obedience is not a burden but a pathway to a fulfilling, purposeful, and ultimately eternal relationship with Jehovah God.
