Many young people wonder why the Bible emphasizes honoring one’s parents. In a world where independence and self-expression are often valued above all else, the concept of honoring parents may seem outdated or irrelevant. However, Jehovah God established this principle for a vital reason, and understanding it can bring lasting benefits and peace to your life.
A Command With Divine Authority
The command to honor one’s father and mother comes directly from Jehovah Himself. In Exodus 20:12, we read, “Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you.” This command is not merely a suggestion but a foundational principle for family and societal stability. Honoring one’s parents acknowledges the authority structure God established and demonstrates respect for His wisdom.
Practical Ways to Honor Your Parents
Honoring parents involves more than mere words. Proverbs 23:22 reminds us, “Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.” Listening attentively, showing gratitude, and being obedient within reason are tangible ways to practice honor. While parents are imperfect, the Bible encourages patience and kindness, as illustrated in Colossians 3:20: “Children, obey your parents in everything, for this pleases the Lord.”
The Long-Term Benefits of Honoring Parents
God’s command carries a promise: “so that you may live long in the land” (Exodus 20:12). Respecting parental guidance often leads to wise choices and stability in adulthood. Ephesians 6:2-3 reiterates this, stating, “Honor your father and mother—which is the first commandment with a promise—that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” Young people who heed their parents’ advice, especially regarding moral and spiritual matters, often avoid destructive behaviors that could lead to hardship.
Honoring Parents Amid Challenges
Honoring parents does not mean approving of sinful behavior or enduring mistreatment. If parents act contrary to God’s principles, young people must prioritize obedience to Jehovah (Acts 5:29). Yet, even in difficult circumstances, they can maintain a respectful attitude. Jesus provided a perfect example when He ensured His mother’s care, even while enduring immense suffering on the cross (John 19:26-27).
The Spiritual Impact of Honoring Parents
Ultimately, honoring one’s parents reflects a person’s relationship with Jehovah God. Proverbs 1:8-9 states, “Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They are a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.” By respecting parental authority, young people cultivate humility, obedience, and wisdom—traits that strengthen their relationship with God and prepare them for future responsibilities.
Understanding why Jehovah commanded us to honor our parents helps young people navigate family relationships with wisdom and grace. It also cultivates a sense of gratitude, responsibility, and spiritual maturity that benefits them throughout life.
