How Can Loving God Transform Our Knowledge and Actions?
In our pursuit of understanding and wisdom, we often seek knowledge, believing that intellectual comprehension of Scripture and doctrine is the highest achievement of faith. However, the apostle Paul presents a profound truth in 1 Corinthians 8:3, which redirects our focus: “But if anyone loves God, he is known by him.” This verse, though seldom cited, contains deep theological and practical significance for Christian living. Paul’s words highlight that true knowledge is not merely intellectual but relational. To be known by God is the highest honor and blessing, surpassing all human wisdom.
The Contrast Between Mere Knowledge and Love for God
Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 8:3 follows a discussion about food sacrificed to idols. The Corinthian believers, emboldened by their knowledge that idols are nothing, assumed they had the freedom to eat without concern. However, Paul reminds them that knowledge, when divorced from love, leads to arrogance. Just a verse earlier, he writes: “Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up” (1 Corinthians 8:1). This contrast is crucial because it emphasizes that intellectual understanding, though valuable, can be dangerous if it fosters pride instead of humility. The solution is found in verse 3: to love God is to be truly known by Him.
This principle applies to all areas of Christian life. Many seek knowledge for its own sake, desiring to master theology, biblical history, and doctrine. Yet Paul warns that knowledge without love is insufficient. The goal of learning must be to grow closer to God, not simply to accumulate facts. Loving God transforms knowledge from a tool of self-exaltation into a means of edification.
What Does It Mean to Be “Known” by God?
The phrase “he is known by him” signifies more than God’s omniscience. While God knows all people in a general sense (Psalm 139:1-4), this verse refers to an intimate, covenantal relationship. To be known by God means to be acknowledged as His own, to be in His favor, and to experience His guiding presence.
Paul elsewhere uses similar language to describe the believer’s relationship with God. In Galatians 4:9, he writes: “But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world?” Here, being known by God is contrasted with returning to the bondage of legalism and sin. The emphasis is not just on intellectual knowledge of God but on being in a relationship with Him.
Jesus also speaks of this intimate knowing in John 10:14: “I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me.” This knowing is personal and affectionate, signifying a relationship based on love and faithfulness. In contrast, those who do not belong to God will hear the terrifying words in Matthew 7:23: “I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.” Clearly, being known by God is not a trivial matter—it determines one’s eternal standing.
Love for God as the Foundation of True Worship and Obedience
Loving God is not merely a feeling or sentiment; it is demonstrated through obedience. Jesus states in John 14:15, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” Love for God is the foundation of true worship, guiding both our knowledge and our actions. This love must surpass all other affections and allegiances, as seen in Deuteronomy 6:5: “You shall love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”
The Corinthian believers boasted in their knowledge, but Paul redirects their attention to what truly matters: a heart devoted to God. This devotion transforms how we interact with others, ensuring that our freedom in Christ does not become a stumbling block to weaker believers (1 Corinthians 8:9).
The Practical Implications of 1 Corinthians 8:3
Since being known by God is connected to loving Him, we must ask: How do we cultivate love for God in our daily lives?
-
Through Persistent Study of His Word – The more we immerse ourselves in Scripture, the more we understand God’s character and promises. Love for God is not blind; it is informed by His revealed truth.
-
Through Prayer and Dependence – Love grows through communion. Just as earthly relationships deepen through time spent together, our relationship with God flourishes when we seek Him earnestly.
-
Through Obedience and Submission – True love manifests in action. It is not enough to claim affection for God while living in defiance of His commands. Our obedience demonstrates that our love is genuine.
-
Through Love for Others – John writes in 1 John 4:20, “If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar.” Love for God must result in love for our neighbors, reflecting His character to the world.
Conclusion: The Highest Privilege of the Believer
Paul’s statement in 1 Corinthians 8:3 is more than a passing remark; it is a foundational truth. To be known by God is the greatest privilege, and it is granted not to those who merely accumulate knowledge, but to those who love Him with sincerity. This love reshapes our understanding, humbles our hearts, and compels us to live in a way that glorifies Him.
Knowledge without love leads to pride, but love infused with knowledge produces wisdom, humility, and service. Our greatest pursuit should not be to know more facts but to know God Himself—and more importantly, to be known by Him.
