How Can We Live Daily as Pleasing to God?
What Does It Mean to Live Pleasing to God?
Living in a way that pleases God requires daily commitment, grounded in the truths of Scripture. To understand what it means to live pleasing to Jehovah, we must first acknowledge His divine authority, revealed in His Word. The apostle Paul exhorted the Thessalonians, saying, “We instructed you how to live in order to please God, as in fact you are living. Now we ask you and urge you in the Lord Jesus to do this more and more” (1 Thessalonians 4:1). Here, Paul emphasizes growth in spiritual maturity, reflecting a life aligned with God’s will.
Pleasing God does not arise from human merit or personal effort alone but from faith and obedience to His Word. Hebrews 11:6 states, “Without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.” Faith is the foundation, yet this faith must manifest in action through loving obedience. Jesus reminded His disciples, “If you love me, keep my commands” (John 14:15). Thus, the believer’s life is defined by adherence to Jehovah’s commands and striving to reflect His holiness.
The Role of Scripture in Guiding Daily Living
The Bible, inspired by the Holy Spirit, serves as the ultimate guide for daily living. The apostle Paul, writing to Timothy, declared, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (2 Timothy 3:16–17). This passage highlights the transformative power of the Word in shaping every aspect of life. Scripture equips believers to discern what is right, exposing sin and providing instruction on how to walk righteously.
Psalm 119, a profound meditation on the value of God’s Word, underscores its importance for daily life. The psalmist proclaims, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path” (Psalm 119:105). Just as a lamp illuminates the way in darkness, the Word directs believers amidst the moral confusion of the world. By meditating on it daily, as encouraged in Joshua 1:8, Christians internalize divine principles, enabling them to resist sin and pursue righteousness.
The Scriptures also reveal God’s expectations for relationships, worship, and personal conduct. In Micah 6:8, Jehovah’s requirements are summarized: “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Each aspect—justice, mercy, and humility—requires daily intentionality. Through consistent study and application of Scripture, believers cultivate these virtues, glorifying God in their lives.
Living in Faith and Obedience
Faith and obedience are inseparable in a life that pleases God. Abraham exemplifies this truth, as highlighted in James 2:22: “His faith and his actions were working together, and his faith was made complete by what he did.” Abraham’s willingness to obey Jehovah, even when commanded to sacrifice Isaac, demonstrated unwavering trust in God’s promises. This account, recorded in Genesis 22, shows that genuine faith always produces obedient actions.
Obedience involves submitting to God’s authority in every area of life. Jesus set the ultimate example of obedience through His submission to the Father’s will, even unto death (Philippians 2:8). Believers are called to emulate this attitude by denying self and following Christ daily. Jesus instructed, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). Such surrender requires constant reliance on God’s strength, as human effort alone cannot achieve it.
One key area of obedience is moral purity. Paul urged the Corinthians, saying, “Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20). Honoring God involves abstaining from sin and pursuing holiness, as Jehovah Himself is holy (Leviticus 11:45). This call to holiness encompasses thoughts, words, and actions, demanding vigilance against sinful influences.
Demonstrating Love in Daily Interactions
Love is central to a life that pleases God. Jesus identified love as the greatest commandment, summarizing the Law and the Prophets: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37–39). Genuine love for Jehovah results in selfless love for others, reflecting His character.
The apostle John reinforces this principle, stating, “Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love” (1 John 4:8). This love manifests in practical ways, such as forgiving others, serving those in need, and speaking truth in kindness. Paul instructed the Colossians, “Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you” (Colossians 3:13). Forgiveness mirrors God’s grace and fosters peace in relationships.
Serving others is another expression of love, as exemplified by Jesus washing His disciples’ feet (John 13:12–17). This act of humility teaches believers to prioritize others above themselves. Paul echoed this attitude in Philippians 2:3–4: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.” Such love transforms communities, bearing witness to Jehovah’s goodness.
Perseverance Amid Life’s Difficulties
Life’s difficulties often test a believer’s commitment to live pleasing to God. James 1:12 affirms, “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” While Jehovah does not cause hardships, He strengthens His people through His Word, enabling them to endure. Paul wrote, “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed” (2 Corinthians 4:8–9). These words reflect the resilience of faith grounded in Jehovah’s promises.
Believers are assured that Jehovah’s presence sustains them during challenges. David declared, “Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me” (Psalm 23:4). By trusting in God’s sovereignty and seeking His guidance, Christians can remain steadfast, knowing that their labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58).
Conclusion: A Life That Glorifies God
Living daily to please Jehovah is a continual process of faith, obedience, love, and perseverance. It requires immersion in His Word, reliance on His strength, and a heart devoted to His will. As believers grow in grace and knowledge, their lives increasingly reflect God’s glory, fulfilling the purpose for which they were created (Isaiah 43:7). This journey, though challenging, is deeply rewarding, bringing eternal joy and fellowship with the Creator.
