The question of God’s true nature is foundational in Christian theology and the defense of the faith. For conservative Evangelicals, this is not an abstract philosophical endeavor but a matter of carefully examining the inspired, inerrant Word of God. Scripture reveals who God is, what He desires, and how He acts in human history. By using the historical-grammatical method, we seek to uncover the intended meaning of the biblical authors without recourse to typology, allegory, or the subjective interpretations of modern critical theories.
God as Creator and Sustainer
The Bible opens with the unequivocal declaration of God’s sovereignty and power as Creator: “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). This truth establishes Jehovah as the originator of all that exists. The creation account reveals a God of order, wisdom, and intention, as evidenced by the structured progression of creation over six literal days. This understanding is further reinforced by Exodus 20:11, where it is written, “For in six days Jehovah made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day.”
Jehovah is not only the Creator but also the Sustainer of His creation. Colossians 1:16-17 teaches that “all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” The Creator’s ongoing involvement in the universe negates any notion of deism, which suggests a distant, uninvolved deity. Instead, Scripture affirms that God actively upholds His creation by His providence and power.
The Holiness and Righteousness of God
Central to understanding the nature of God is His holiness. The prophet Isaiah captures this truth in his vision: “Holy, holy, holy is Jehovah of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory” (Isaiah 6:3). Holiness signifies God’s absolute purity, separateness from sin, and moral perfection. The New Testament echoes this theme, as 1 Peter 1:16 exhorts believers, “You shall be holy, for I am holy,” reflecting Leviticus 11:44-45.
God’s righteousness flows from His holiness, demonstrating His commitment to justice and truth. Deuteronomy 32:4 declares, “The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.” This righteousness ensures that God’s judgments are always fair and impartial. Romans 2:6 affirms, “He will render to each one according to his works,” highlighting God’s unwavering justice in rewarding or punishing based on one’s deeds.
God’s Omniscience, Omnipotence, and Omnipresence
Jehovah’s attributes of omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence distinguish Him as the infinite God. His omniscience is proclaimed in Psalm 139:1-4, where David marvels, “O Jehovah, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.” God’s perfect knowledge extends to all things, including the future, as seen in Isaiah 46:10: “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things not yet done.”
God’s omnipotence is evident throughout Scripture. In Genesis 18:14, Jehovah asks rhetorically, “Is anything too hard for Jehovah?” This rhetorical question underscores His ability to accomplish all that He wills. Jeremiah 32:17 echoes this sentiment: “Ah, Jehovah God! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you.”
God’s omnipresence ensures that He is not confined to any location. Psalm 139:7-10 eloquently expresses this truth: “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there! If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!” Jehovah’s omnipresence assures believers of His constant presence and accessibility.
The Love and Mercy of God
While God’s holiness and righteousness might inspire awe and reverence, His love and mercy draw humanity into a relationship with Him. John 3:16 encapsulates this truth: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” This love is not an abstract concept but is demonstrated through sacrificial action.
God’s mercy is evident in His patience and willingness to forgive. Lamentations 3:22-23 proclaims, “The steadfast love of Jehovah never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” This mercy is extended to all who seek Him with a repentant heart, as seen in Psalm 103:8-12, which states, “Jehovah is merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.”
The Immutable Nature of God
Unlike humans, who are subject to change and inconsistency, God is immutable—unchanging in His essence, attributes, and promises. Malachi 3:6 declares, “For I, Jehovah, do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.” This immutability ensures that God’s character and purposes remain steadfast throughout history.
The New Testament reaffirms this truth in Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” God’s unchanging nature provides a foundation of trust and security for His people, knowing that He will always act in accordance with His holy and loving character.
Conclusion
The nature of God, as revealed in Scripture, is multifaceted and profound. Jehovah is the sovereign Creator, holy and righteous, omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent. He is also loving, merciful, and immutable. These attributes reveal a God who is both transcendent and immanent, deserving of worship and trust. By studying the Word of God and applying the historical-grammatical method, believers can grow in their understanding of who God is and respond with reverence, obedience, and faith.
