THE EVANGELISM HANDBOOK

The Biblical Understanding of Human Value

The Bible provides a foundational understanding of human worth, which is rooted in the creation account. Genesis 1:27 declares, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” This affirmation reveals that every individual is created in the image of God (Imago Dei), granting inherent dignity and worth to every person. This truth counters any sense of inferiority by emphasizing that a youth’s value is not determined by personal achievements, societal expectations, or external appearances but by their divine origin.

Psalm 139:13-14 further reinforces this perspective, stating, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” This passage assures young people that they are uniquely designed by Jehovah, underscoring that their worth is intrinsic and not subject to human comparison.

The Roots of Inferiority in Youths

Inferiority among youths aged 12–20 often arises from a variety of internal and external influences. During adolescence, young people grapple with identity formation, as described in Ecclesiastes 11:9-10, which acknowledges the tension between youthful desires and the accountability to God. Peer comparisons, academic pressures, familial expectations, and social media amplify feelings of inadequacy. When individuals measure themselves by worldly standards, they are prone to discouragement and feelings of inferiority, echoing the warning in 2 Corinthians 10:12: “When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise.”

Inferiority may also stem from personal sin or perceived failures. Romans 3:23 reminds us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,” yet the gospel offers redemption and restoration, demonstrating that a youth’s worth is not diminished by their shortcomings but is grounded in God’s grace.

The Role of Parents and the Church in Addressing Inferiority

Parents and the church play pivotal roles in shaping a youth’s understanding of their value. Proverbs 22:6 emphasizes the importance of early instruction: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and even when he is old, he will not depart from it.” By consistently affirming biblical truths about human worth, parents and church leaders can help young people counteract feelings of inferiority.

Ephesians 6:4 provides guidance for parents, instructing fathers not to provoke their children to anger but to “bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.” This verse highlights the balance between correction and encouragement, ensuring that children are nurtured in an environment that fosters confidence in their God-given identity.

Church leaders are called to “encourage the disheartened” and “help the weak” (1 Thessalonians 5:14). By providing mentorship, biblical teaching, and opportunities for service, the church community can reinforce a youth’s sense of purpose and belonging in God’s kingdom.

Scriptural Examples of Overcoming Inferiority

The Bible contains numerous accounts of individuals who struggled with feelings of inferiority but found their identity and purpose in God.

Moses: Called Despite His Weakness

Moses, though called by Jehovah to lead Israel out of Egypt, initially doubted his ability due to his perceived inadequacies. In Exodus 4:10, Moses says, “Pardon your servant, Lord. I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue.” Jehovah’s response in verses 11-12 redirects Moses’ focus from his own limitations to God’s sovereignty: “Who gave human beings their mouths? Who makes them deaf or mute? Who gives them sight or makes them blind? Is it not I, Jehovah? Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.”

This account teaches youths that their worth and abilities are not determined by their limitations but by God’s power working through them.

Gideon: Valued Despite His Humble Background

Gideon struggled with feelings of inferiority due to his lowly status. When called to deliver Israel, he protested in Judges 6:15: “Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” Jehovah’s assurance in verse 16, “I will be with you, and you will strike down all the Midianites, leaving none alive,” demonstrates that divine presence, not human status, defines one’s potential.

This story reminds young people that their background or current circumstances do not determine their future; Jehovah’s calling and presence are the true sources of strength and value.

Timothy: Empowered Despite His Youth

Timothy, a young pastor, faced challenges due to his age. Paul’s counsel in 1 Timothy 4:12 addresses this issue directly: “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” This verse encourages youths to find confidence in their spiritual maturity and obedience to God rather than in societal validation.

The Role of the Gospel in Resolving Inferiority

The gospel of Jesus Christ addresses the root causes of inferiority by affirming the believer’s worth in God’s eyes. Ephesians 2:10 declares, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” This verse emphasizes that every believer has a unique purpose ordained by God, nullifying the need for comparison or feelings of inadequacy.

The assurance of God’s love, demonstrated in John 3:16, is the ultimate remedy for inferiority: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The cross is the ultimate testament to a believer’s worth, as Christ’s sacrifice underscores the immeasurable value God places on each individual.

Practical Steps for Youths to Overcome Inferiority

To overcome feelings of inferiority, youths should cultivate a biblical mindset and actively seek to align their thoughts with God’s truth. Romans 12:2 advises, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Renewing the mind involves meditating on Scripture, praying for wisdom and confidence, and resisting the lies of the enemy, who seeks to undermine their identity in Christ (John 8:44).

Youths are also encouraged to engage in Christian community, where they can be edified and held accountable. Proverbs 27:17 states, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” Fellowship with godly peers and mentors provides an environment where youths can grow in faith and self-assurance.

Service is another powerful antidote to inferiority. By using their God-given gifts to serve others, youths can experience the joy of fulfilling their purpose. 1 Peter 4:10 urges believers: “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”

The Eternal Perspective on Inferiority

Inferiority loses its power when viewed in light of eternity. Revelation 21:4 offers hope for the future: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.” This promise assures believers that their struggles are temporary and that their eternal inheritance as co-heirs with Christ (Romans 8:17) far outweighs any earthly challenges.

As youths grow in their understanding of God’s truth and their identity in Christ, they can experience freedom from the bondage of inferiority and live boldly for the glory of God.
