GODLY WISDOM SPEAKS Wives_02 HUSBANDS - Love Your Wives

The Divine Design for Marriage

Marriage is a sacred covenant designed by God to reflect his relationship with his people. According to Scripture, the roles of husband and wife are not culturally conditioned constructs but divinely ordained positions established at creation. Genesis 2:18 reveals the foundational purpose of marriage: “Then Jehovah God said, ‘It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.'” This demonstrates that the wife was created to complement and assist her husband, while the husband was given responsibility to lead.

Throughout Scripture, marriage is consistently portrayed as a living illustration of Christ’s relationship with the church. In Ephesians 5:22-33, Paul exhorts wives to submit to their husbands as the church submits to Christ and calls husbands to love their wives sacrificially, as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her. This dynamic of leadership and submission is not a sign of inequality but rather a divine order reflecting mutual respect and complementary roles.

When the Biblical Pattern Breaks Down

While the biblical model is clear, many Christian marriages struggle when husbands fail to lead effectively or wives resist their role as helpers and followers. Such dysfunctions often manifest in ways that undermine unity, sow discord, and prevent the marriage from glorifying God. When these issues arise, pastoral counseling must address them biblically, with a focus on restoring both husband and wife to their God-given roles.

The case study presented highlights a common marital issue: a wife who resists her husband’s leadership and a husband who grows passive or frustrated in response. While it may appear that the primary problem lies with the wife’s refusal to submit, the biblical approach begins by addressing the husband’s responsibility to lead in a Christlike manner. This focus aligns with Scripture’s teaching that husbands are to love their wives as Christ loves the church, initiating sacrificial leadership even when faced with resistance.

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

Biblical Headship: A Husband’s Responsibility

The Scriptural Foundation for Leadership

The concept of headship is clearly articulated in 1 Corinthians 11:3: “But I want you to understand that the head of every man is Christ, the head of a wife is her husband, and the head of Christ is God.” This establishes a hierarchy in which the husband’s leadership flows from his submission to Christ. True biblical headship is not authoritarian or domineering; rather, it reflects the servant-leadership modeled by Jesus, who humbled himself to the point of death for the sake of his bride, the church (Philippians 2:5-8).

Ephesians 5:25-28 expands on this, stating, “Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing.” A husband’s leadership must therefore prioritize his wife’s spiritual growth and well-being, reflecting the same care and selflessness that Christ demonstrated.

The Challenges of Leading a Resistant Wife

In situations where a wife resists her husband’s leadership, the temptation for the husband may be to either withdraw or react in frustration. Both responses are unbiblical and counterproductive. Withdrawal abdicates the God-given responsibility of headship, while frustration stems from pride and selfishness. Instead, husbands are called to respond with patience, understanding, and sacrificial love, recognizing that their role is to lead by example and trust God to work in their wife’s heart.

1 Peter 3:7 provides additional guidance, instructing husbands to “live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.” This verse underscores the importance of empathy and mutual respect in marriage, emphasizing that a husband’s conduct toward his wife has spiritual implications.

Practical Steps for Leading Biblically

A husband struggling to lead effectively must first examine his own heart and motives. He should ask himself whether he is leading in a way that glorifies God or whether his leadership is tainted by selfish desires or a lack of trust in God’s sovereignty. Prayer, meditation on Scripture, and accountability with mature believers can help him realign his priorities with biblical principles.

Specific actions may include initiating regular times of prayer and Bible study with his wife, making decisions with her input while maintaining final responsibility, and seeking ways to serve her sacrificially. By consistently demonstrating Christlike leadership, a husband can create an environment in which his wife is encouraged to follow willingly.

Biblical Submission: A Wife’s Calling

The Scriptural Foundation for Submission

Ephesians 5:22-24 commands wives, “Submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife even as Christ is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit in everything to their husbands.” This submission is not a reflection of inferiority but a recognition of the husband’s God-ordained role as leader.

1 Peter 3:1-2 echoes this teaching, encouraging wives to “be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, when they see your respectful and pure conduct.” A wife’s submission, rooted in trust in God’s design, can have a powerful sanctifying influence on her husband.

Overcoming Obstacles to Submission

For many wives, submission is challenging because it conflicts with cultural values that prioritize independence and equality. However, biblical submission does not negate a wife’s equality with her husband; rather, it complements it by affirming her unique role within the marriage. Galatians 3:28 affirms that in Christ, “there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” This spiritual equality coexists with distinct roles within the marriage covenant.

A wife who struggles to submit must examine her heart for attitudes of pride, fear, or rebellion. She should seek God’s help in cultivating humility and trust, recognizing that her submission ultimately honors God and reflects her faith in his wisdom.

Practical Steps for Following Biblically

A wife can demonstrate submission by supporting her husband’s leadership, offering input respectfully, and trusting him to make decisions for their family. Even in situations where she disagrees, she should communicate her perspective graciously and defer to his authority unless it involves sin or violates Scripture. By maintaining a posture of respect and encouragement, she can foster a partnership that honors God and strengthens their marriage.

Addressing Sin and Promoting Growth in Marriage

The Doctrine of Sin and Its Role in Marital Conflict

Marital struggles often arise from unaddressed sin, whether in the form of pride, selfishness, or a failure to fulfill biblical roles. James 4:1-3 explains, “What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel.” Recognizing sin’s influence on behavior is essential for both spouses as they seek to address conflict biblically.

The Role of Forgiveness in Reconciliation

Forgiveness is a cornerstone of a healthy marriage, reflecting the grace that believers have received from God. Colossians 3:13 exhorts, “Bear with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgive each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” Both husband and wife must cultivate a spirit of forgiveness, extending grace to one another in the face of shortcomings and offenses.

Glorifying God Through Marriage

The ultimate purpose of marriage is to glorify God by reflecting his character and love. When husbands lead sacrificially and wives follow willingly, their relationship becomes a testimony to the transformative power of the gospel. This divine design, rooted in creation and fulfilled in Christ, serves as a beacon of hope and truth in a world marred by broken relationships.
