The Biblical Definition of Peace: What Does It Mean to Have Peace?
In Scripture, peace is much more than the mere absence of conflict or distress. The Hebrew word often translated as “peace” is shalom, which conveys a sense of wholeness, completeness, and harmony with Jehovah, oneself, and others. Similarly, the Greek word eirēnē in the New Testament refers to tranquility and well-being that comes through a right relationship with God. Inner peace, according to the Bible, involves being in harmony with God and living a life in line with His commands and promises.
Isaiah 26:3 assures us, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” This perfect peace is not derived from worldly achievements or possessions but from a heart and mind anchored in trust in Jehovah. Jesus, during His time on earth, also promised His followers a unique kind of peace, saying, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you” (John 14:27). This peace that Jesus gives surpasses human understanding, transcending the temporary and limited peace that the world offers.
Peace Begins with Reconciliation with Jehovah
The first step to attaining inner peace is reconciliation with God. Since the fall of humanity, sin has been a barrier between God and humankind, disrupting the intended harmony. Sin creates guilt, fear, and restlessness in a person’s heart, making true peace impossible without forgiveness and restoration. Romans 5:1 emphasizes this foundational truth: “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Through faith in Jesus, believers are justified and brought into a peaceful relationship with Jehovah, which is the cornerstone of inner tranquility.
The Apostle Paul also wrote that Jesus “is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostility” (Ephesians 2:14). Through Jesus’ sacrifice, peace is restored, and believers are reconciled to Jehovah. Inner peace cannot truly exist without this relationship with God, as human efforts alone are inadequate for overcoming the weight of sin.
The Role of Faith and Trust in Achieving Peace
Scripture repeatedly teaches that peace flows from a heart that trusts in Jehovah fully. Proverbs 3:5-6 instructs, “Trust in Jehovah with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” Trusting Jehovah with all one’s heart implies surrendering control and acknowledging that His wisdom surpasses human reasoning. When we trust God with our lives, concerns, and uncertainties, we are freed from the weight of anxiety and fear.
Jesus addressed this principle of trust in the Sermon on the Mount, saying, “Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all” (Matthew 6:31-32). Instead of being anxious, Jesus encourages His followers to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Matthew 6:33). Faith in Jehovah’s provision and care dispels anxiety, allowing believers to experience peace, knowing that Jehovah is in control and will provide for their needs.
Renewing the Mind: Cultivating Peaceful Thoughts
Attaining inner peace requires intentional thought management, a theme emphasized in Scripture. The human mind is often prone to fears, doubts, and negative thoughts, which disrupt peace. Paul advises believers to “not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). The transformation of the mind involves replacing worldly and anxious thoughts with the truths of Jehovah’s Word, focusing on His promises rather than earthly fears.
Philippians 4:6-7 further outlines how prayer and gratitude foster peace: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Instead of allowing anxieties to overwhelm, believers are encouraged to bring every concern to Jehovah in prayer, trusting that He hears and cares. Prayer, coupled with gratitude, transforms our perspective, filling our hearts with peace even amid life’s challenges.
The Power of Contentment in Achieving Inner Peace
Contentment is an essential component of inner peace. Discontent often stems from comparing oneself to others, craving what one does not have, or focusing on the uncertainties of the future. Paul speaks of his own experience with contentment, saying, “I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:11-13). His trust in Jehovah’s provision enabled him to find peace regardless of his circumstances.
The book of Hebrews also encourages contentment, stating, “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you’” (Hebrews 13:5). This reassurance reminds believers that true peace is not dependent on material abundance but on the assurance of Jehovah’s presence and faithfulness.
The Importance of Forgiveness in Maintaining Peace
Unforgiveness and bitterness can be significant barriers to inner peace. When individuals harbor resentment, they disrupt their own peace, allowing anger and bitterness to take root in their hearts. Jesus emphasized the necessity of forgiveness, instructing His followers to forgive others as they have been forgiven by God (Matthew 6:14-15). Forgiving others frees a person from the weight of bitterness, restoring peace to their heart and mind.
Paul reinforces this teaching in Ephesians 4:31-32, where he writes, “Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.” Choosing forgiveness over resentment is essential for inner peace, as it aligns a believer’s heart with Jehovah’s love and mercy.
Peace through the Holy Spirit and Guidance of Scripture
Believers are guided toward peace by the Holy Spirit, who works through Scripture to shape their hearts and minds. As Galatians 5:22-23 outlines, “the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” This peace, produced by the Spirit, is cultivated through a life lived in harmony with Jehovah’s Word.
While the Holy Spirit does not dwell in believers, He guides through the Scriptures, providing insights and wisdom. Psalm 119:165 underscores this relationship between peace and Jehovah’s Word, saying, “Great peace have those who love your law; nothing can make them stumble.” Jehovah’s commandments are not burdensome but are a source of joy and stability, leading to a life of peace.
Surrendering Control and Accepting Jehovah’s Sovereignty
Another significant aspect of peace is surrendering control to Jehovah and acknowledging His sovereignty over all things. Human beings often struggle with the desire to control their circumstances, but genuine peace is found in surrendering to Jehovah’s perfect will. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, “The heart of man plans his way, but Jehovah establishes his steps.” Acknowledging that Jehovah directs our paths enables believers to release anxiety and rest in His divine wisdom.
Jesus exemplified this surrender in the Garden of Gethsemane, where He prayed, “Not my will, but yours, be done” (Luke 22:42). Jesus’ submission to Jehovah’s plan, even in the face of immense suffering, serves as the ultimate model of inner peace through surrender.
The Hope of Eternal Peace: Looking Forward to Jehovah’s Kingdom
For Christians, ultimate peace lies in the promise of Jehovah’s Kingdom, where there will be no more pain, suffering, or conflict. Revelation 21:4 provides a glimpse of this future peace: “He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.” The hope of eternal life with Jehovah allows believers to endure present challenges with peace, knowing that their future is secure.
Romans 8:18-19 further affirms this, stating, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God.” The anticipation of Jehovah’s ultimate plan of peace provides a foundation for inner tranquility amid temporary earthly struggles.
How Can We Cultivate Inner Peace Daily?
To attain inner peace, believers are called to focus on Jehovah’s promises, meditate on Scripture, and cultivate a prayerful life. Daily reliance on Jehovah, rejecting worldly anxieties, and trusting in His perfect timing and wisdom form the basis of lasting peace. Isaiah 26:3 offers a powerful assurance, reminding believers that “you keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.”
By focusing on Jehovah rather than the distractions and troubles of the world, believers can maintain a peace that surpasses human understanding, grounded in the certainty of Jehovah’s love and His eternal purposes.
