The question of what kind of life we want is a deeply personal and spiritual one. It is not merely about our career ambitions, wealth, or even family goals. Rather, it is fundamentally about our relationship with God and how we live according to His will. The Bible offers a clear path toward a life of purpose, fulfillment, and happiness, centered on obedience to God’s Word, guided by the teachings of Christ, and empowered by biblical wisdom. So, what kind of life do you want? The Bible provides practical counsel to help us answer this question and live a life that is pleasing to Jehovah.

The Search for Meaning: What Are You Living For?

From the very beginning of human existence, man has sought meaning and purpose in life. Ecclesiastes 3:11 tells us that God “has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.” This verse reveals that mankind is inherently driven by a longing for something greater—something beyond the physical life we experience.

Yet, many people today live only for temporal things. They focus on material wealth, social status, and self-fulfillment, believing that these will bring them happiness. However, Jesus warned about the futility of such pursuits. In Matthew 16:26, He said, “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” The pursuit of worldly gains often leads to emptiness, not true fulfillment. This is a recurring theme throughout the Bible, where we are reminded that life is about much more than wealth, possessions, or even personal success (Ecclesiastes 5:10; 1 Timothy 6:9-10).

The apostle Paul echoes this sentiment in Philippians 3:7-8, where he recounts how he once valued worldly accomplishments but came to consider them worthless compared to knowing Christ. “But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.” Paul found true meaning and purpose in life through his relationship with Christ, not in worldly accolades or success.

Life Guided by God’s Wisdom: What Does the Bible Teach?

The Bible provides a foundation for living a life that is meaningful, purposeful, and aligned with God’s will. The wisdom found in the Scriptures is described in Psalm 119:105 as “a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” It is through the Word of God that we are given the knowledge to discern between right and wrong, to live according to God’s standards, and to pursue a life that is pleasing to Him.

One of the most fundamental teachings of the Bible is the importance of seeking God first in all things. In Matthew 6:33, Jesus instructs, “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” When we make God the priority in our lives, everything else falls into place. This does not mean we will be free from challenges or difficulties, but it assures us that God’s blessings and guidance will be with us as we navigate life’s journey.

Living a life of wisdom involves more than intellectual understanding; it involves applying God’s principles to every aspect of our lives. James 1:22 advises us to “be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” True wisdom is demonstrated in action, in how we treat others, in the decisions we make, and in our obedience to God’s commandments. The book of Proverbs is filled with practical advice on how to live a wise and godly life, including avoiding laziness (Proverbs 6:6-11), speaking truthfully (Proverbs 12:22), and managing our finances wisely (Proverbs 21:20).

WALK HUMBLY WITH YOUR GOD

Living with Christlike Love: How Should We Relate to Others?

At the heart of the Christian life is love—love for God and love for others. Jesus summarized the entire Law in two commandments: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself” (Matthew 22:37-39). These two principles form the foundation of a life that honors God and serves others.

Living a life of love means treating others with kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. It means putting the needs of others above our own and seeking to build relationships that reflect the love of Christ. In John 13:34-35, Jesus gave His disciples a “new commandment”: “That you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Paul also emphasized the importance of love in his letters to the early Christian congregations. In 1 Corinthians 13, often called the “Love Chapter,” Paul explains that love is the greatest virtue. He writes, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal” (1 Corinthians 13:1). Paul goes on to describe the attributes of love, saying that it is patient, kind, and not arrogant or rude (1 Corinthians 13:4-5). Ultimately, Paul concludes that “faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love” (1 Corinthians 13:13).

To live a life of love, we must continually ask ourselves: How can I reflect Christ’s love to those around me? How can I be a blessing to others? As Christians, we are called to be the hands and feet of Christ in a broken world, showing others the love of God through our actions, words, and attitudes.

A Life of Obedience: What Does It Mean to Follow God’s Will?

To follow God’s will is to live a life of obedience to His Word. Obedience is not always easy, especially in a world that often values individualism, self-reliance, and personal freedom over submission to God’s authority. However, Jesus made it clear that obedience is essential to a life of faith. In John 14:15, He said, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”

Obedience involves not only following God’s moral laws but also seeking His guidance in our daily decisions. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” When we trust in God and submit to His will, He directs our steps and leads us in the way that is best for us.

However, obedience is not about following rules for the sake of following rules. It is about cultivating a heart that desires to please God and walk in His ways. Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Obedience flows from a heart that treasures God’s Word and seeks to live in a way that honors Him.

The Rewards of a God-Centered Life: What Can You Expect?

Living a life that is centered on God and His will brings many rewards, both in this life and in the life to come. Jesus promised, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (John 10:10). This abundant life is not necessarily one of material wealth or worldly success, but one of spiritual richness, peace, and contentment. As we walk with God and seek to do His will, we experience the joy and fulfillment that comes from living according to our created purpose.

One of the greatest rewards of a God-centered life is the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). This peace comes from knowing that we are in right relationship with God, that we are forgiven of our sins through Jesus Christ, and that we are secure in His love. No matter what challenges we face, we can have confidence that God is with us and will sustain us.

In addition to peace, a life lived in obedience to God brings blessings in our relationships with others. As we live out the principles of love, forgiveness, and kindness that Jesus taught, we build stronger, healthier relationships with our family, friends, and community. Proverbs 3:1-4 speaks to the blessings of living according to God’s wisdom: “My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you.”

Finally, the ultimate reward of a God-centered life is eternal life with God. Jesus promised that those who believe in Him and follow His teachings will have everlasting life (John 3:16; John 5:24). This promise gives us hope and assurance as we navigate the trials and challenges of this world. No matter what we face, we can look forward to the day when we will be with God forever in His kingdom.

What Kind of Life Will You Choose?

As we reflect on the kind of life we want, the Bible makes it clear that a life centered on God is the only path to true fulfillment, peace, and joy. Jesus invites each of us to follow Him, to surrender our will to His, and to live according to the teachings of Scripture. The question remains: What kind of life will you choose?

Choosing to live for God involves making daily decisions to align our lives with His will. It means seeking first His kingdom and righteousness, loving others as Christ loved us, and walking in obedience to His commandments. It is not always an easy path, but it is the path that leads to eternal life and the abundant blessings of a relationship with our Creator.

May each of us choose the path that leads to life—life with God, life filled with purpose, and life that brings glory to His name.
