Why Is Love a Vital Quality?
Love is fundamental to Christian living and the core of the teachings of Jesus Christ. The importance of love is underscored by Jesus in Matthew 22:37-39, where He declares, “You shall love Jehovah your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” These commandments encapsulate the essence of Christian ethics, demonstrating that love for God and for others is the foundation of all biblical instruction.
The Apostle Paul emphasizes the preeminence of love in 1 Corinthians 13:13, stating, “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” Here, Paul highlights that while faith and hope are essential, love surpasses them in its eternal significance. Love is not merely an emotion but a guiding principle that influences all aspects of a Christian’s life.
The Bible further underscores the importance of love in 1 John 4:8, which states, “Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.” This verse illustrates that love is intrinsic to God’s nature and, consequently, to the nature of His followers. Thus, to be built up by love means to reflect God’s character in our actions and relationships.
How Can We Learn to Form a Longing for God and Grow Our Love for God?
Developing a longing for God and growing in love for Him is a process that requires intentionality and dedication. The Bible provides clear guidance on how believers can cultivate this vital relationship.
-
Spending Time in God’s Word: Regular engagement with the Scriptures is crucial for deepening our understanding of God and His love. Psalm 1:2-3 describes the blessings of meditating on God’s Word: “But his delight is in the law of Jehovah, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.” By immersing ourselves in the Bible, we grow in our knowledge of God and His will, which in turn fosters a deeper love for Him.
-
Prayer: Communication with God through prayer is essential for nurturing a close relationship with Him. Philippians 4:6 encourages believers, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” Through prayer, we express our devotion, seek His guidance, and experience His presence in our lives.
-
Obedience to God’s Commandments: Obedience is a tangible expression of our love for God. Jesus states in John 14:15, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” By living in accordance with God’s commands, we demonstrate our commitment to Him and our desire to please Him.
-
Fellowship with Other Believers: Engaging in fellowship with other Christians encourages growth in our love for God. Hebrews 10:24-25 admonishes, “And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” Fellowship provides opportunities for mutual encouragement and accountability, helping us to grow in our faith and love.
How Does Our Conduct Prove That We Love God?
Our conduct serves as evidence of our love for God. True love for God is manifested in our actions and attitudes, reflecting His character and commands.
-
Living a Holy Life: Holiness is a reflection of our dedication to God. 1 Peter 1:15-16 instructs, “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy.’” By striving for holiness, we honor God and demonstrate our love for Him.
-
Loving Others: Love for others is a direct command from Jesus and a key indicator of our love for God. In John 13:34-35, Jesus says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” Our relationships with others should be characterized by compassion, kindness, and selflessness, reflecting the love of Christ.
-
Serving Others: Service to others is a practical expression of love. Galatians 5:13 urges, “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” By serving others, we demonstrate the love of God in action and fulfill His command to love our neighbors.
-
Maintaining Integrity: Integrity in our actions and decisions shows our commitment to God’s standards. Proverbs 10:9 affirms, “Whoever walks in integrity walks securely, but he who makes his ways crooked will be found out.” Upholding integrity in all aspects of life reflects our love for God and our desire to honor Him.
How Do We Demonstrate Our Love for Jesus?
Our love for Jesus is demonstrated through our actions, attitudes, and devotion to His teachings. Jesus Himself provided clear instructions on how to express our love for Him.
-
Keeping His Commandments: Obedience to Jesus’ commandments is a primary way to show our love for Him. In John 14:21, Jesus states, “Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” By following Jesus’ teachings, we demonstrate our commitment to Him and our love for His guidance.
-
Abiding in His Love: Abiding in Jesus’ love involves maintaining a close and continuous relationship with Him. John 15:9-10 emphasizes this, saying, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love.” Abiding in His love means staying connected to Him through prayer, worship, and obedience.
-
Bearing Fruit: Jesus teaches that bearing fruit is a result of abiding in Him and a demonstration of our love. In John 15:5, He explains, “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” The fruit of our lives—our actions, attitudes, and influence—reflects our connection to Jesus and our love for Him.
-
Loving One Another: Loving others as Jesus loves us is a clear demonstration of our love for Him. 1 John 4:19-21 reinforces this, saying, “We love because he first loved us. If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen. And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother.” Our love for others is a direct reflection of our love for Jesus.
-
Sacrificial Living: Jesus modeled sacrificial love through His life and death. Ephesians 5:1-2 encourages believers to follow this example: “Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children. And walk in love, as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us, a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.” Sacrificial living means putting others’ needs before our own and serving with selflessness and humility.
Growing in Love Through the Holy Scriptures
The Holy Scriptures provide comprehensive guidance on how to grow in love for God and others. By studying and applying biblical principles, we can develop a deeper and more authentic love.
-
Meditating on God’s Love: Reflecting on God’s love as revealed in the Bible helps us to grow in our own love. Romans 5:8 declares, “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Meditating on this truth deepens our appreciation for God’s love and inspires us to love others in the same way.
-
Following Biblical Examples: The Bible is filled with examples of individuals who demonstrated love for God and others. Hebrews 12:1 encourages believers to look to these examples: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Studying the lives of biblical figures can provide practical insights and inspiration for loving others.
-
Applying Biblical Teachings: The teachings of the Bible provide clear instructions on how to love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 offers a detailed description of love: “Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” Applying these qualities in our daily interactions helps us to grow in love.
Practical Expressions of Love
To be built up by love, it is essential to put love into practice in tangible ways. The Bible provides guidance on how to express love practically.
-
Encouragement: Offering words of encouragement is a powerful way to show love. Hebrews 3:13 advises, “But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” Encouraging others strengthens their faith and fosters a loving community.
-
Hospitality: Showing hospitality is a practical expression of love. Romans 12:13 instructs, “Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.” Opening our homes and hearts to others demonstrates care and kindness.
-
Acts of Service: Serving others in practical ways reflects the love of Christ. Galatians 6:9-10 encourages believers, “And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” Acts of service meet physical needs and provide support.
-
Forgiveness: Practicing forgiveness is essential for maintaining loving relationships. Colossians 3:13 teaches, “If one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as Jehovah has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.” Forgiveness heals wounds and restores harmony.
The Role of the Holy Spirit in Developing Love
While there is no indwelling of the Holy Spirit, Christians are guided by the Spirit-inspired Word of God, which plays a crucial role in developing love. The Holy Spirit’s influence through the Scriptures empowers believers to live out God’s commands.
-
Guidance through the Word: Understanding how we receive illumination and guidance from God is rooted in the inspired, inerrant Word of God. According to 1 Corinthians 2:12-14, the process involves more than merely acquiring a mental grasp of biblical truths; it requires embracing these truths as divinely revealed. The expressions “does not accept,” “folly,” and “not able to understand” highlight how unbelievers critique and reject divine revelation. This passage does not imply that unbelievers are incapable of understanding the Bible’s content; rather, they view it as foolishness. Christians, however, are guided by having the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16), achieved through being biblically minded. This necessitates a careful analysis of the Bible’s genres, historical context, and language, employing the conservative, objective historical-grammatical method of interpretation while avoiding the speculative fallacies of modern biblical criticism.
-
Empowerment for Obedience: The Scriptures empower believers to obey God’s commands. Philippians 2:13 states, “For it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.” Through the Bible, the Holy Spirit motivates and enables believers to live according to God’s will.
-
Conviction and Transformation: The Holy Spirit, through the Word, convicts believers of sin and guides them towards transformation. Hebrews 4:12 affirms, “For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” This conviction leads to repentance and growth in love.
The Fruit of the Spirit
The fruit of the Spirit, as described in Galatians 5:22-23, includes love as a primary attribute: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.” These qualities reflect the character of God and are essential for building up believers in love.
-
Love: Love is the foremost fruit of the Spirit and encompasses all other virtues. It is the defining mark of a true follower of Christ.
-
Joy and Peace: Joy and peace are natural outflows of a life rooted in love. Romans 15:13 highlights this connection: “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.”
-
Patience and Kindness: Patience and kindness are expressions of love that build up relationships. 1 Corinthians 13:4 underscores their importance: “Love is patient and kind.”
-
Goodness and Faithfulness: Goodness and faithfulness are qualities that reflect God’s nature and foster trust and reliability in relationships.
-
Gentleness and Self-Control: Gentleness and self-control are essential for maintaining harmony and showing respect for others. Ephesians 4:2 advises, “With all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love.”
By cultivating these fruits, believers can effectively demonstrate love and build up the body of Christ.
Conclusion
By examining and applying these biblical principles, Christians can develop a deeper understanding of Jehovah’s will and purpose, enabling them to view matters from His standpoint. This perspective not only provides guidance and support in times of trial but also encourages a life of faithfulness and devotion to Jehovah. Through continual reliance on the Scriptures and the support of the Christian community, believers can maintain their focus on Jehovah’s promises and reflect His love and compassion in their daily lives.
